Great vid! Thanks for the info. Totally agree with the cutting the stick. It makes sense since everyone has a different sized knob which will affect the weight/balance of a stick anyway.

For me, I’ve always used a knob that allows the shaft to have enough clearance to pick it up when dropped. I also like the stopping factor when I go to shoot. I can throw the stick down getting ready to shoot and my blocker hand locks at the top because I can easily feel it. Paddle down isn’t enough reason for a small knob, but that’s just me.

I never cut the shaft of my sticks until about a year ago. I got a Jusse Saros pro return stick and the shaft was about 2.5 inches shorter than another pro return stick I got at the same time. At first, I was a bit disappointed until I tried the stick. The shorter stick was a major game-changer for me. All of a sudden I could shoot the puck easier because I could get my blocker arm more level to the ice for better leverage instead of having my elbow pointing straight up in the air since the stick was too tall. I cut all of my stick shafts to match the Saros stick after that.

Steve, totally agree 100% Myth on cutting shaft of stick. Ive cut the shafts as a shorter goalie 5' 4" my whole life for exactly the reasons you mention. Never tossed off the balance, also really small knob, so i could paddle down with no gap between shaft and ice. Good tips for all the young goalies out there.

Some days I really miss being "the guy" for sharpening at the sports store I used to work at. Saturday morning sharpening lines were insane, but I loved it. The best customers were the ones who brought coffee along with their skates. One extra pass with the Gusto Glide for those folks.

I recall way back in the day it was common to have a huge nob on the stick to help you pick it up when dropped. It held the shaft up off the ice so you could get your paddle hand on the stick easier. We didn't use the paddle down technique back then. So I think that may be where that idea came from.

Love the advice. My problem is I am 6'1", and I use a 27.5" Warrior (just got a 28" True to try). I have seen the advice of a lot of goalies going shorter with their sticks (some my size going down to a 25-26"). I have long arms and shorter sticks in the butterfly cause my arm and blocker to feel completely unnatural in position - too far down and in to keep the blade flat on the ice. I do have a 26" sitting around that I may have to try during a drop-in some time. As for sharpening skates, I used to be a manager/zamboni driver at my local rink at nights for 15 years while working my normal job during the day, I haven't worked there in 4 years but thankfully everyone knows me and I still just walk in and sharpen my own skates so I know they are done right.

Great advice all around! I recently switched from Sherwood to CCM for sticks found the same curve and lie but was surprised the shaft was longer but being a newer style its most likely giving extra room for cutting it down. Was hoping you would mention a bit on the radius of the rocker for blades... not sure how many goalies change from stock but I get “my guy” to give me a bit of forward lean. I feel flat footed and less mobile otherwise, might be a touchy subject for some. Glad I found your channel, your pro tips for younger goalies are perfect, should make many play smarter not harder! Favourite drill so far was the karate bag smacking around Trav haha first time I’ve ever seen that but a perfect drill in many ways just missing the guy banging in those juicy rebounds!

Great video! I have noticed that I have the opposite issue with goalie sticks. Because of the blocker, when paddle down, there is a gap between the stick handle and the ice, even with a small knob.

Great infos, thanks! Didn’t know that stuff about sticks. With skates, I use 3/4” as a player but 3/8” as a goalie. There’s no way I could use 3/4 in net- it would be slip n slide for me😃

Thanks. It is my beater and my wife named it the “Snot Rocket” because of the pukey green color. I’m first job as kid was cutting grass to by own goalie pads and I leaned to drive a 3 on the tree in a very similar truck to this. So even though I have a Ford GT, I prefer driving this baby.

Great advice Steve!! I had the same guy do my skates from atom to JR and then to beer league. Heck he even did my Sons from pee wee to last year of midget sadly he passed away the year my son went to JR. So it was tough to find a new skate guy. When it comes to picking sticks nobody wanted to go with me I was super picky and took my time superstition I guess. My son is doing the same thing. PS thank you for your knowledge that you are passing on. As soon as the sports store opens I will get you a picture of that giant stick for your large pads.

This is the most important video for goalies. Literally the 2 things I fought with people while working at the hockey store. Young goalies buying sticks that were too big and people wanting specific sharpening without knowing what they were talking about. Sharp means clean, period the end. Hollow depth is not sharpness.

“Vaughn paid you $ 50,000 to NOT wear their stuff in public”. LOL 😂. With the dead pan delivery that was a good one. Just enough humour in there so that you’re not reaching for it. I remember my dad telling me not to run my finger down the edge of my skate blade when I was about 10 back in about 1987. The very next practice I did exactly that! Bled all over the place. Never told him about it though.🤦😂😂

The benefits of working at an ice rink is I can do my skates by myself (however for my goalie skates I generally have another guy do them for me because he is flawless when he does skates), for free, and pretty much as often as I want.

been cutting my sticks since 1997... when I came back to hockey in 2015, continue to do so.... Skates have been a patrick roy cut since 95... well, 95-05. I have no idea what that cut was, my mom knew. Wish I had all my Roy info she had. Super sharp, loved it, other goalie thought I was nuts. Skates are Sharpen every 3 to 4 games for me.

even if it did affect the balance it would be minimal i think.. could always put something at the knob to counterbalance it if needed, like how a sword uses a pommel . when i was young i liked to have a really heavy stick, usually a Hextall Sherwood.. when i had a lighter stick i actually put lead tape under the hockey tape on the blade to add weight

Agree with everything other than using a machine. I have an older Sparx that hasn’t let me down yet. It’s consistent and just so convenient. Maybe at the pro level they can tell a difference, but I can’t at the beer league level

Man thanks for clarifying the dull skate myth. Always thought there was something wrong with the way I played because when I started, I had the older style pads (Sherlite 10's), which feels a hell of a lot wider and more difficult to slide than the new style pads. Coupled with dull skates and I was sliding out a lot. Now my go to is a 3/8 sharpen and occasionally I still get weird looks at the skate shop lol Any thoughts on sharpening machines you can buy to sharpen at home?

Great video on mods Keeks! I'm not sure if you read these comments but I have a question and I'd like to know you're opinion (maybe a video on this). I grew up playing forward and I am a right handed shooter but playing net I catch left handed. I've tried almost everything from buying full right gloves and trying to catch full right (didnt feel " natural" to me), i tried using full right sticks and flipping it around to shoot the puck but its not ideal on a fast play and the rebound on a reverse curve is just awful. Finally i just decided to just learn to shoot left but it makes my puck handling "mediocre" and i often choose to just not play the puck. Any thoughts on the matter? Maybe you've coached someone with the same dilemma or know an nhl'er that had to go through this? Last bit of info, I'm just a beer leaguer now. I tried to go from a low end 27" composite to a 25" high end foam core which was lighter. It helps getting stuck under my leg pads in the butterfly during play. I haven't cut my shaft down either because I touch the goal for spacial awareness. I down play the puck much but I'm trying to get better at it and was just trying to things out. Any suggestions on that would be appreciated.

You should still be able to tap off with a little shorter shaft. If your knees land on the stick in the butterfly it isn’t really about the paddle height. You just need to keep a 12” gap between your stick blade so your knees have room to hit clean ice.

Careful Steve; we may start to expect that throughout your future downloads - could put added pressure on you when your clicking the enter button! Regarding skate sharpening: I’ve been lucky enough to find ‘my guy’ (just as anal as I am) who takes a lot of pride in his work. He’s not the fastest at his profession; but he’s well worth the wait. BTW, I also had an incident with fingers along freshly sharpened blades. I destroyed the resale value on my previous pads by readjusting my toe strap during a game. Without realizing it, my finger ran along the edge and created a really good cut. To the point where the blood was all over one of my pads before realizing what happened.

I still to this day see kids completely oblivious to the dangers of these blades especially since skate sharpening technology has come so far. Thank you. I have heard about flat bottom V but the only real thoughts on that would be again, finding a consistent guy you trust who does it and if there are any tangible benefits would the juice be worth the squeeze finding a consistent repeatable result.

I get it done at a good shop, Hockeybase here in Jyväskylä Finland, they have a former goalie on staff so the first time I had them done with his recommendation and have made slight adjustments from there with good results

I think if the availability expands it will be another great option to tweak your edges how you want them. My student, Ed Belfour was the king of skate blade tweaks... his inside and outside edges has different HEIGHTs depending on where on the blade you looked.

Hey coach is there a limit on the length of a stick shaft? I am surprised Roger Neilson never gave one of his goalies a stick with a very long shaft late in a game to mess with the other team and perform a long distance poke check :)

yes there is. And I'm sure Roger thought of it. He had Palmateer lay down his stick parallel to the goal line when he pulled him late in the game to prevent a long slider from going in. That was quickly outlawed...

This is what I've been waiting for Thank You. I've been using a 5/8 hollow snce I can remember, I think I'll try 1/2 when we get back to it. I''m 5' 8" with a 25' paddle. I ciut 3/4 inch off my shaft.How to you feel about a 14 lie for me, which is what I'm using. It feels pretty good to me. any tweeks you'd suggest? I also use a very small knob to burry it in my blocker when shooting.

Hey Stevo, I gotta a question. I have a precious angel of a son. He's 13 and is a second year peewee c team goalie. He absolutely refuses to get his skates sharpened. Because freshly sharpened skates make it too hard to shuffle. Honestly, is my kid just being a pus... I mean a sensitive flower? Or is this common for the age group? Any suggestions? Besides physical violence. Which I'm all for. But the law tends to frown on. Yes, I'm the get off my lawn guy. Thanks

Using dull skates 100% guarantees he will never get out of minor hockey. It is his choice, but there isn’t one goalie playing junior, college or higher with dull skates. Maybe try a less shallow hollow, so even freshly sharpened skates will bite in the ice less. The inability to use sharp skates means his edge control hasn’t been developed as of yet. I wouldn’t spend any money on expensive gear, camps, clinics or lessons if he continues in this direction. It would be like putting money into fixing up a 1972 pinto. 😎

I once made sweet love to my girlfriend in the back of a pinto! Point taken though. The precious angel started sharpening his skates after reading your response to my question. It literally transformed his game. So much so. He made the bantam B2 team this year. Which is huge. Considering he's played on the C team throughout his goalie career. You're the man Steve! Like deep V bottom, profiling and pitch are extremely personal and impossible to recommend across the board. They are great if you can get them dialed in by someone you trust. However, I think many, many goalies have far bigger pressing issues...

@@MC-24 generally if you asked to have your skates sharpened, and don’t specify, you will end up with either a 1/2” or 5/8” depending on your location. For me, neither was “sharp” enough, and I was constantly pulling groin muscles when learning to butterfly push. Just couldn’t get enough bite. Today I go with a 5/16 after trying everything in between. It makes shuffles across the top of the crease very taxing, but I get a lot of bite and strong pushes down on my knees. Hope that helps.

"Find your guy!" Facts! Three weeks ago, the brainless teenager at a certain chain hockey outlet decide to sharpen my blades, which are thicker than regular player skates (4mm), with a standard wheel. I stepped on the ice and almost ate sh×t instantly. Zero edges on the inside of the blade. Was thankfully able to wangle a way to get just enough edge to play the game, but I won't be taking that shortcut again.

zzisis lame joke. Meaning I was so brutal they didn’t want me wearing their gear in public as it would reflect badly on their gear😎

“I’ve seen guys with massive knobs” “Whenever I see a little goalie with a giant shaft” Lol sounded funny at times but a great video nonetheless.

TendyStyle which explains why he has mediocre movement skills by NHL standards. He is a big body who battles for pucks and is a super competitive guy. But if you mimic his skate sharpening you will be sorely regretful.... EvERY other goalie in the NHL uses razor sharp skates...😎

Just has a parent berate me in the lobby as she took her kid to the ER for stitches. Apparently, not watching every kid wipe off their blades correctly was a faux pas that set off “Karen”..😳
