How To Sharpen Your Goalie Skates At Home| It WORKS😲

Спорт

My synthetic ice was dulling my blades pretty quickly, so I wanted a quick and easy way to sharpen my goalie skates at home. And we've all gotten to the rink only to find that we had a bad edge, so it would be nice to be able to fix that.
I tested out two different sharpeners on my Bauer goalie skates and here's what I found...
Blade Barber - amzn.to/30ZEyAH
Re-Edger - amzn.to/3g9PMZW
#skatesharpener #goalieskates #sharpenskatesathome

    Hi Marie, Great video. Your technique in using these tools looks good. A note about the Blade Barber. If your 3mm thick blades are machine sharpened at 5/8" radius of hollow, the 9/16" BB will not sharpen the edges. If you machine sharpen your blades to 9/16" ROH then this tool will work much better. We carry 7 different ROHs and 5/8" is one of them. I think you'll see a big difference if you try a 5/8" Blade Barber.

    Awesome - thanks for that - at the time I ordered mine the site I bought it from did not show 5/8 and it was lockdown time, so even just this one was great for keeping me on my synthetic ice. Question for you now - - do you have ones for a 4mm blade too?

    Hey Maria! Glad to see you had a way to keep good edges for shutdown - that's not always an easy thing! I also have been using a 5/8" cut, and have done a lot of stone work to manage my blades between sharpenings. I most commonly used (and always carry) a synthetic ruby "sweet stick" - one of the pink ones that is curved all over and kind of "ankh" shaped without the arms. I use the flat (or if I am home, a flat stone) to handle nicks and deburring, and can use the corners to work on the hollow! Once any defects are handled, one or two passes in the groove, and skates are wicked sharp. The guy I had sharpen my skates left the local shop last year, and then the shop itself closed (now opened under a new store chain, with different people) and I am just picky enough about my skates and edges that I didn't want to train a new guy(s) to do them the way I like that just before shutdown, I decided to take the plunge and grab one of the Sparx sharpening machines, and a 5/8" wheel. Not to sound too much like a commercial for it, but OMG, it is SOOO nice to be able to properly sharpen my own skates! It is a fully automatic machine, and portable enough if you want to help out teammates at the rink or carry to tournaments or away skates. I still use the stones and leather strops to "clean up" edges either after or between sharpenings... don't think I will ever go to a shop again! I'm a 61 year young BABL, and have become a little set in my ways, but after over 50 years of goaltending, and a long term subscriber to your channel and programs, I have to say I am playing at the best I think I have ever done, and remain generally injury free these days! Thanks for all you do for all of us!!! Whatever method you use, keep your skates the way you are comfortable with. I really think confidence in your edges and skates in general is a primary factor in confidence in your game play and movement on the ice. Enjoy your game!

    @@goalietraining I don't push hard but also not a gentle glide. The person who did my skates last didn't put enough passes on the blade and they felt like butter knives so I do put a bit more pressure on it until I can get them sharpened again.

    Where were you 6 months ago when I bought the re-edger and ran it 4 times down my blades! Lol. Thank goodness my defenseman told me the secret to dulling them down. He had me run my skates over the plastic at the bench Door. One soft pass on the edge before each game has done wonders! Love your videos! Thanks for helping this beer league goalie!!

    So I went and purchased the butterfly challenge app. I went and looked it over once I did. But have a question about it there is only one work out each for the S-M release and active stretch. So you just repeat both of them alternating each day seven times in a row to make up the 14 days. And this is suppose to help widen butterfly? Does that sound right to you? Just want to make sure to be able to hopefully improve butterfly

  • @goalietraining

    @goalietraining

    Jack Bauer I just want to clarify, that you shouldn’t have “purchased” anything, since I give the butterfly challenge app away for free. So if you had to purchase it, let me know right away so I can see who’s selling my program. But yes it’s two days you alternate between the two days most goalies get 2 to 5 inches wider butterfly after 14 days.

    Just a note of caution, if you have coated blades (black Bauer blades for example) DON’T use a skate stone on the sides or it’ll wear down the coating. You can use a leather strop instead - my skate guy just uses it for all skates.

    Hmmmmm - not 100% sure - could be a lot of issues - wrong size, wrong fit for his foot (some people's feet fit Bauer better, some CCM, etc), maybe they are just new and they aren't broken in yet, but if he's been wearing them for a while, that isn't the answer. I would head into your local goalie shop and see what they think - maybe they just need to be punched out if there is one spot that is really giving him trouble.
