Preview: Vladimir Putin reveals what he admires about America

Russian President Vladimir Putin is among those heading to the United Nations to address the General Assembly Monday, for the first time in more than a decade. Charlie Rose sat down for a one-on-one interview with the Russian leader for “60 Minutes” and looked at what Putin thinks of America and how the world views him.

Moondancer Targaryen You know how Mexicans sound when they speak English but you can still understand them, just a strong accent but you get the point, He fits the job description. No American leader that I have lived under speaks multiple languages and can talk to a couple leaders without a translator.

It's a political motive that he doesn't want Russia's national language to be inferior to English. And Russian is also considered to be one of few working languages of United Nations. That's why he keeps speaking Russian in every single interview & political speech. But of course he speaks English (or maybe other language) privately with other country leaders all around the world.

Russia has had some very terrible setbacks. WWII casualties for the Soviet Union are estimated 27,000,000. The USA suffered an estimated 419,400 casualties. Russia as it stands today is not the same Russia of 25 years ago since The Soviet Union ended. We, as Americans, need to consider Russia's history to understand Putin's carefully chosen words. These are tough people who know pain, loss, and hardship.

Krzysztof Łuszczyk Brussels is no better than the Nazis either. The experience in Libya and Syria are proving that Brussels doesn't care about the rule of law, decency or anything else. NATO is involved in Syria and Libya. As an American I'm proud to have helped push the USSR to the point of collapse. Russia is not the USSR. They were victims of Socialism too. Millions of Russians needlessly died because of Stalin and his successors. I'm ashamed as hell about what we did since 1989. We Americans are a good and decent people who do not always get asked what we want our government to do. Many of us are complacent and idle, which is a sin. We have a saying, "For evil to triumph good people must do nothing". We good people in America have done too much nothing since 1989. What we are doing in Ukraine is wrong. We should be making peace, not making struggle. If Mr. Putin wanted Donbass he could take it easily. The West won't risk a nuclear exchange with Russia. We should encourage dialogue, not encourage Poroshenko to arm Right Sector terrorists into Donbass. We should encourage Donbass to rejoin Ukraine on equal and fair terms. Poland deserves to be left alone to enjoy its freedom, culture and happiness. The same right should be given to all peoples. Time for America to mind its own business.

+Nijat Muhtar 30 million Russian people did not die. 30 million people within the Soviet Union died. The idea that Russia is Europe's champion is falsehood, the many nations that stand on their own feet today were the ones in a majority who stood tall against Hitler. Only 6% of actual ethnic Russian territory was in termoil with Nazi Germany. Notice with Stalingrad now Volgograd stands in Russia, it is on the very western brink of Russia. That his how far the Nazis got in WW2.

@@PortugalZeroworldcup But Serbian scientist named Nikola Tesla discovered ways to make the world what it is today in terms of electricity. However, electric current existed even before Tesla's discoveries. Direct current was in use, invented by Thomas Edison, and it is important to note that Nikola Tesla did not invent or discover even alternating current, it existed before him but was considered unusable. It was Tesla's inventions that made alternating current efficient and widely applicable, helping to electrify the world. Tesla's most famous invention was the development of an alternating current system. These systems have enabled the transmission of electricity over long distances and are used worldwide for its distribution. Direct current at that time had a huge disadvantage, that it loses its power when transmitted over long distances. It also did not have the voltage to run large motors. Tesla believed that alternating current was more efficient for transmitting energy over long distances, due to its ability to be easily transformed and regulated. He used transformers to increase or decrease the voltage of the current, which was an efficient transfer of energy at different voltage levels. He also developed other components, such as alternators, capacitors and various forms of switches to make the system functional.

@@adambublitz975 I wish there had been an effort by world leaders to prevent nato’s expansion. After looking into this conflict I can’t blame PutIn for what was an obvious defensive necessity. Biden also fully enabled and encouraged the invasion with his pull-out in Afghanistan and pulling restrictions on the pipeline. While I can’t blame PutIn for doing this and blame the US and nato for instigating this conflict I can’t bring myself to supporting Russia in this conflict. As an American Nationalist it is not in the best interest of the US to support Russia in this conflict. I think that the worst thing the US could do is deploy Americans in Ukraine. It’s not our fight and regardless of our empathy for those in harm’s way our engagement would worsen the conflict and result in the deaths of Americans. It’s incredible how useless our sanctions are currently; they are our way of saying that we care while not caring at all. Hopefully this conflict will end soon and minimally violently though I don’t believe that will be the case. Praying for everyone in Ukraine and Russia for peace and wellness.

The same time Russia bombed Ukraine, US bombed Somalia, yet nobody cares. Also how naive are you to think that Putin invades countries because he is just 'pure evil'.. In what type of a fantasy lala land are you Americans living at. Russia has set clear boundaries to NATO expansion, yet The US is not willing to negotiate and they keep expanding NATO closer to Russia. Do you really think The US would let Russia anywhere near Mexico or Canada? We almost had a nuclear war when USSR put weapons in Cuba in 1962. The United States and the West are most hypocritical people in the world and your population is absolutely clueless about what your own country is doing. Also all those war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, and currently too, Saudi Arabia bombing Yemen schools with United States support. Give me a break.

@ThumbsHunter - I certainly agree with you. I think the Cold War was a big historical joke as well as a major error. I had always imagined if the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. had stayed as both allies and friends instead of being enemies. I also think that there would have been absolutely NO NEED for nuclear weapons on this planet as well.

To be fair, I think Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot had given Communism a BAD NAME because of their policies, in other words, they had perverted the ideas of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Vladimir Lenin, in order to take socialism in the wrong direction.

I think it's also so that his Russian is obviously better than his English and as a politician it is imperitive that he use his words correctly (the difference between in meaning between 'rival' and 'enemy' for instance would be an easy but critical mistake for a non-native speaker to think, and friend vs fiend is only 1 letter difference which mispronouncing or an accent could mess up) and with the constant accusations the west throws his way, he can't afford to give them further ammunition. Whereas, if the interpreter uses the wrong word or misinterprets his meaning, then the issue does not fall on Putin and it's easier to prove mistranslation than the lack of a freudian slip.
