    That design is SO dope. Even for today. You rarely see necklaces as bold as this, that remain elegant. I think the elegance remains because of the 'rope' style of the chain, and partly because the chain is so short - almost like a choker. And the modern feel is partly because of the size of the pendant, and I think also because of the size of everything. It's like everything is magnified: even the connecting rings are exaggerated.. (Normally those are the parts that jewelers try to hide). I think this is very much ahead of it's time. And I personally find this way more beautiful than the gemstone spangled, more expensive and petite jewelry that you (or maybe just me) usually associate with Tiffany's. (Like the Tiffany lamps, they usually seem to have more different colors and materials. And the gold usually serves more like the bearer or 'frame' for whatever precious gemstones are included). Curious as to who made this for them

  • @novellanurney1294

    @novellanurney1294

    I noticed that as well. My Father was a jeweler and did most work on antiques or custom. I believe the safety chain is there so that if you decide to wear just the necklace , the cross is removed from the circular clasp and the necklace rotated so that the clasp and safety chain are at the back of the wearers neck. A great deal of jewelry from that time frame was very versatile. Necklaces could double as bracelets sometimes, pendants frequently also had pin clasps on the back to double as brooches and so on. She likely could have had other pendants that were attached either in a way similar to how the cross is attached or a pendant with a hinged and locking bail that could be opened and locked over the necklace with the safety chain at the back.

    I think the evaluation was too low. Even if manufactured overseas at the time........ In 1870 it's still going to be made with a relatively high level of craftsmanship compared to fast fashion today and historically of course it's has its place as a beautiful chapter in a massive brand. With a design and details such as the lack of spellout on the piece make it all the more standout. I could see many artists wearing this today and paying top dollar.

    The value is basically only in the gold. 14ct is only 58% gold. It’s also not signed and they don’t know who made it. The valuation was correct. It’s practically worthless without the box and an 1870’s original Tiffany Box probably makes up 30% of what he evaluated it for.
