President Uchtdorf Addresses Church History Symposium

Experts on the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Utah for the two-day 8th annual Church History Symposium. The event, titled "The Worldwide Church: The Global Reach of Mormonism," was held at Brigham Young University in Provo and at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, Thursday-Friday, 6-7 March 2014. Speakers discussed the growth and impact of the Church outside of the United States, where it was established on 6 April 1830, nearly 184 years ago. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency, gave the keynote address in the Conference Center Theater on 07 March 2014.

I love the statement herein: "I have learned to be patient, knowing that in the end things will work out. Gods kingdom will continue to grow. It is His work. He will succeed. The truth will continue to flourish and spread throughout the earth. Sometimes all it takes is a little faith and little more patience. Stay calm and carry on. That is good council at times."

Its not okay to let our church leaders evade difficult questions about church history or doctrine based on vague suggestions that we should "doubt our doubts" , "give brother Joseph a break" or "be patient" and wait for further revelation on a given subject. The church has the burden of proof in establishing its truth claims, not you and I. If there are no acceptable answers (from the church's standpoint) to difficult questions, then we can safely conclude that the answers are either unfavorable to the church, or simply do not exist, and thus the presumption should be drawn against the Mormon church on that point as not supporting, or unfavorable to the Church's position. We can then move on to the next topic of discussion until all our doubts and questions have been weighed and considered for and against continuing our membership in the Mormon Church. No more delaying our questions or doubting our doubts, brothers and sisters. The mind games must end now!

God knows all things, Rob Paulson, if you go to the source of truth (God), you may get answers for yourself. Even if you don't like His answer, ask in faith and I believe He will guide you and answer all your concerns.

I disagree. The church has no duty whatsoever to make up my mind or yours. You have the responsibility of obtaining a witness from God, which is ultimately the only unimpeachable source of information. You may not conclude because the Church doesn't answer a question that there is a presumption any more than if you refuse to respond to a policeman's question they get to assume you are guilty. You will never get to the truth of the matter by eliminating all possible counter-arguments, it just cannot be done. If Church leaders want to respond, they will. But if they don't--that just means that it is your duty to evaluate the claims for yourself. In a healthy marriage you don't start by assuming your spouse is guilty of an indiscretion every time they can't remember what they were doing. You as free to accept claims made by the enemies of the Church as you are to accept claims by the supporters. Just don't outsource your thinking--do it yourself.

If you want to leave it, fine. Then leave it alone and let the believers believe.
