President Obama: Trayvon Martin Made America Confront Its Original Sin | NYT Opinion

Ten years ago, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, who perceived the unarmed teenager as a threat. He would later be acquitted of all charges in the killing, arguing successfully that he had acted in self defense. These events reignited the conversation about race and justice in America. "The contemporary civil rights movement unfolded directly in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin,” says Henry Louis Gates Jr. in a new Opinion video. Former President Barack Obama argues that Trayvon's death "was the start of America looking inward and in fits and starts coming to terms with what has always been our original sin."

The audio was edited. Zimmerman only said "he looks black" after he was asked "black, white, or hispanic?". This is the whole problem with the Trayvon story. The media pushed a false narrative that a big, racist white wannabe cop shot a black kid because he was wearing a hoodie and walking around in a white neighborhood, when in reality a 5'8" half Latino saw a 6'2" guy wandering around in the rain who looked like he was casing units in a multicultural community that had experienced multiple break-ins, and he only fired his weapon after he was attacked and was being beaten to death.

Mr. Zimmerman is not a good person and he’s not a hero. Zimmerman also isn’t a murderer and if Mr. Martin did not assault Zimmerman we wouldn’t have to argue over who screamed louder or if Martin reached for Zimmerman firearm. In America you are innocent until proven guilty and the evidence was on Zimmerman side. If you assumed guilt over this case simply based of a Hispanic man taking the life of a young black man then you are no better than the people who are responsible for getting a disproportionate amount of innocent black men imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. It’s also extremely terrifying to watch our presidents spread misinformation, lies, and stoke the flames of division and civil unrest.

This video plays the deceptively edited call!!! The infamous doctored audio recording that got two people fired from NBC and launched a lawsuit. Look at about 47 seconds into the video, it plays the faked Zimmerman 911 call, edited to make him look racist: Zimmerman: Hey, we’ve had some break-ins in my neighborhood and there’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good or he’s on drugs or something. He looks black. Here were the actual words of the original call: Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about. Dispatcher: Okay and this guy is he white, black or Hispanic? Zimmerman: He looks black.

You are using that as an excuse to withdraw from any proper communication with Obama and half of the world. By ignorance you shield yourself from any proper reflection or thoughts to be considered. Start talking about the topic and the arguments themselves, with all the vigor you can muster! He was one of the few politicians fiercely opposing the war in Iraq, which after the war in Vietnam was by far the most bloody american war with the most airstrikes on civilians. President Bush ordered that war on the most untrustworthy of premises. Yes, there were airstrikes during Obama's presidency. Yes, there were also civilian casualties. But with all the military involvement that he inherited, it was hard to not make these mistakes. Many of these were mistakes at lower levels of hierarchy as well, which of course a president also always shares responsibility for. But blaming Obama as a president of airstrikes is simply delusional and buying into all the right-wing or islamist propaganda that is out there. I am absolutely for investigations and open discussions about american war crimes during all presidencies. I think that there is too much ignorance towards their victims and what fear it strikes into the minds of many people next to them. But dismissing a president who is trying to do a better job than the warmonger before him, succeeding 90% in that, is ill-advised. Yes blame him, but with measure. Obama is about much more than airstrikes. Don't let these airstrikes be an excuse to not take part in an honest conversation. If Obama has any particular strength in my opinion, then it is his ability to be open to conversation with a very large variety of people from all over the world.

He said, *"he's on drugs or something"* implying Trayvon was acting odd. What is wrong with Zimmerman saying that? No one knows how Trayvon Martin was acting, whether it was perfectly normal, odd, fine or otherwise. Zimmerman's *perception* of the way Trayvon was acting isn't evil or hateful, necessarily. In his very next sentence, he said, "It's raining, and he's just walking around looking about", which struck Zimmerman as odd. We also now know Trayvon was talking on the phone utilizing a headset to talk on the phone. It may have looked to Zimmerman like Trayvon was talking to himself (also odd). It could have been a hundred other things that gave the *impression* that Trayvon was acting weird or "on drugs or something". The smh is coming from people who can't or won't think their way through a controversial and divisive subject.

The title is wrong. America's Original Sin is Classism, not Racism. The first Africans (Angolans) brought to the American colonies in 1619 arrived as indentured servants, alongside other indentured servants from Ireland, England, and Scotland. Like the others, they were eventually freed, including Anthony Johnson, who became a successful landowner who supervised both black and white indentured servants. Johnson, not a white man, owned the first legally defined slave in the United States, another black man permanently enslaved as a penalty for attempting to escape his indenture prematurely. The first race laws were not passed for 40 years after America's colonization. Class oppression - exploitation of the poor regardless of race - preceded race oppression and class oppression. It is still the main crisis confronting the country today. This is obvious to anyone who has ever experienced poverty, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, what-have-you. A rich black man has infinite opportunities never afforded to a poor white man. If you think Will Smith Jr is disadvantaged to the average West Virginian white, I have a bridge to sell you in Florida. Racism is of course very real and causes significant additional hardships to African Americans in particular. But today, corrupt, cynical neoliberals like President Obama are responsible for far more human despair, particularly in the African American community, than racists. Bailing out bankers, subsidizing insurance companies, while their voters go bankrupt from healthcare and housing costs. People like Obama want to divert America's attention from classism to racism, so they can maintain their class based privileges. As long as working and middle class Americans are forced to talk about race, they are denied a discussion over their material class welfare. As to the event discussed in this video: I do believe Travyon Martin would still be alive if he were white. But Zimmerman was found not guilty, and Mr Martin would also be alive if he hadn't approached, tackled, and began beating Mr Zimmerman based on his initial suspicious of him. Zimmerman did not approach Mr Martin - he followed him at a distance while reporting on him. That is annoying but does not justify aggravated assault. Mr Martin made a decision to approach and attack him. He could have just stopped and forcefully said "stop following me sir, I live in this neighborhood," or even called the police on him. America needs to get real and hold both itself and its elected leaders responsible. No more false excuses or narratives.

Racism was developed as part of the process of empire, both by the Spanish and the British. The idea of whiteness conferring a different legal status originated in Jamaica (originally it was whether one was Christian or not). You do know that 'qualified immunity' doesn't mean that cops can just do anything they want at any time, with no consequences, right? It means that they can't be held personally liable for actions taken while representing the state, if they were acting in good faith. Like, if someone intentionally made it seem like they had a lethal weapon and rushed a cop, when in reality that person was unarmed, and the cop shoots them dead, that person's family can't sue them. Or, if someone does have a weapon, and the police deploy a taser and they topple over and crack their skull, the individual officer can't be sued. Honestly, if we get rid of qualified immunity, we should just get rid of police at that point. Because if they could be held personally liable for doing the things necessary to protect themselves and society, they would never have a direct confrontation with a suspect ever again.

Revelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

@Meghan it’s literally the philosophy of the past 2000 years. Jesus dying removed the concept that people should suffer for the actions of their parents or ancestors. When you are born, you have no original sin. For thousands of years before, people were seen as born with original sins.
