President Obama's Interview With NPR's Steve Inskeep - December 2015

In a wide-ranging, year-end interview with NPR, the president says he makes "no apologies" for going after ISIS "appropriately and in a way that is consistent with American values." The interview comes as Obama's strategy to fight terror is receiving low approval from the public and fierce criticism from the right for not being more forceful. The president also discusses his concern that campus activists aren't hearing other points of view, the legacy of his climate deal and why he feels Donald Trump is "exploiting" the anger and fear of some American voters.

    It's understandable why many in America do not Obama. His manner, leadership style, policies, and people skills are intelligent, subtle, and calculated. His worldview extends well beyond the shores of the United States and in turn, he is shown great respect by world leaders. Most of his strength, which has translated into America's strength, comes in the form of long term relationship building, strategic planning, and demonstrating real care for the views of all people- including those he does not agree with. Obama plays American politics like a game of chess, when most of his critics, and most republicans in general, are playing checkers. He is undervalued and under appreciated by those who can not speak the language of subtlety, refuse to think critically, or who are driven by knee-jerk reactions and fear. He's simply "on another level".

    +randalusa I remember people telling me that the only reason that I thought Sarah Palin was dumb was because the news media was spreading that idea. Actually, I had listened to her interviews and formed that opinion both rapidly and independently. That's when I realized that dumb people can't recognize smart people. If you don't realize that President Obama is intelligent, or if you think that this thought is some idea passed around, then I have a hunch as to why that is.

    +Edie Anderson Delivered _what_? The man has fked up the country. More unemployed, more national debt, race relations set back years, healthcare more expensive and in worse shape than when he started. Foreign policy is in the sh*tter. He has given Iran the Bomb and kowtowed to Muslim countries. The pulling out of all troops in Iraq leading to the rise of ISIS. The failure of just about every green company his govt subsidized (one of the biggest being Solyndra). And the scandals. The NSA spying, the using of the IRS against conservative groups, Benghazi, Fast and Furious and the death or border agent Brian Terry. The VA scandal. The prisoner swap for deserter Bowe Bergdahl. I could go on... All while he and his family live it up in the WH, go on vacation after vacation, and he plays golf.

  • @undertakr

    @undertakr

    +da5idnz Decreased unemployment, decreased deficit, more honest race relations, health care given to millions of people without it, foreign relations in better standing than since Iraq invasion, one real chance for the bomb to be delayed in Iran actually taken, the reversal of the Iraq war which was a completely misguided lie that cost us thousands of soldier's lives, for nothing. NSA spying was started by the Bush administration. Benghazi is just as much a conspiracy theory as 'Where's the birth certificate', he's de-escalated the drug war, tried funding the VA only to be blocked by republicans... There is another side to every point you've raised. There is no real communication between the sides of this country anymore. The hatred for Obama is so extreme that people are inventing things to say about him, with no relationship to the facts anymore. Is he perfect? No. Is he what you say he is? No.

    You don't have to like what Trump is pushing, but the man is not afraid to speak his mind. He doesn't need money either. Obama is a worthless chump who has drained the USA in an eight year long toilet flush. What a wuss.

    This man is so intelligent and so well spoken. People really need to understand the situation in the middle east. Its not as simple as "putting boots on the ground". It begins with Hussein in 2003 and the conflicts of Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis. The understanding of the relationship between these groups is essential in making smart decisions. Also, we support the FSA which fights alongside ISIS against Assad but we are trying to redirect their goals so that they focus on beating ISIS. I am not saying we should do one thing or another, but before you get on here and talk down on our president, learn about the actual situation in the middle east and ignore the talking head on CNN or FOX

    I feel sorry for him. He probably doesn't need my pity, but I really do feel sorry for him. So much unjustified hatred born of ignorance is directed at him. I don't agree with all of his policies, but he's a very intelligent, thoughtful, respectful person and I think all of his responses in this interview just further back that up. Overall I think he's been a successful president, and if our next one does even half as well I'll be happy.

    Okay, have half of you haters on this video even listened to the entire video? Because what Obama has been saying is logical and meaningful. Is he 100% correct in his decision making? Probably not, and there can be arguments made in areas where he couldn't know shit about the subject. But it doesn't make him a complete idiot. He is an intellectual person, as I would argue Bush was in his term in office, who takes actions on his point of view and morals. People are waaay too critical of the president. Every action has a reaction, and we as citizens do not really think about that. Just an opinion.

    When asked why he wasn't popular with working class' voters in 2008, "And it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations" When asked about his comment 7 years later.... "Look... I was elected twice by decent majorities so..." This is exactly why I don't like this man. This is why people would consider voting for Trump. It's not his position, it's his tact that I don't like. His comments are, many times, polarizing and arrogant. I give him credit for being honest about who he is, and what he has accomplished, but I would expect the leader of a country as diverse as the US to be objective. He's almost of a "let them eat cake level".

    +bon vivant because xenophobia, the fear of Mexicans, Muslims and blacks is not what makes america great. Their frustrations should be directed at the leaders of corporate America who stash trillions of dollars abroad in tax havens, don't pay a living wage and fight every effort to tax the pittance they retain in the united states. We bailed corporate execs out post-2008, in turn they should make an effort to help us out a little.

    +bon vivant America will never be a socialist country. Do you honestly think that everyone can come to America and collect free shit...maybe move to Hollywood and fuck Pamela Anderson? That's not how this country works. If you work hard, or have big tits, you can do well here. If you sit on your ass and complain, you're the problem. We don't need people that will tread on the system and not pay into it. Nothing is ever free. When our President begins to think that free shit is a right, we are fucked. Someone has to pay. When he is letting people come into our country and not making them pay, someone else has to. It's pretty simple shit.

    I love hearing about our personal opinions in regards to foreign affairs as though we have a clue what we are talking about... How people can point the finger to Obama as the center of the issue, is simply ridiculous. Understand the complexity of the situation and don't act/speak on fear that the media establishes. Don't succumb to the media! We need to come together as a country and have a stronger sense of nationalism and faith in our Executive branch. This country has turned into a feeding frenzy amongst eachother. It has become a country that preaches hatred and discrimination to both Muslims/Immigrants etc, instead of remembering the core values that this great country was established upon. We don't even need ISIS to destroy us, we are doing it to ourselves.. WE (the people + congress + media) needs to change, and this country will be great again.
