Unbelievable the cheerful reviews of this interview after all the terrible things Obama did and explains the reason we have the government we do by all those that swallowed the propaganda hook line and sinker even after the Princeton Study proved we have lived in an oligarchy for decades: Obama promised when running the first thing he would do is codifying Roe versus Wade and never did so Democrats could continue to run on it after 50 years of doing so. Obama’s cabinet was selected in an email from Citigroup a month BEFORE the 2008 general election at a time when Wall St. crashed the world economy. Combine that with Citigroup took more TARP money than anyone else. Obama kicked 5.1 million families out of their homes and got Wall St. to keep their bonuses. Obama got AIG the insurance money so Wall St. didn’t suffer losses for their crazy derivative bets without even a haircut that was expected. Obama took us from 2 wars to 7. Obama adopted a right wing heath care program from the Heritage foundation that increased insurance company profits and bankrupted families. Obama dropped more bombs than Bush. Obama deported more Latinos and Bush. Obama’s drone program killed innocent people 90% of the time. Obama continued the Bush tax cuts. After 8 years of Obama and abuse from the Democratic Party, Trump was elected after making the same promises as Obama’s hope and change calling it clean the swamp.

@Sling Ding Obama's book wrote about how republicans blocked everything from happening. Eg In the interest of bipartisanship, obama's team made 200+ amendments to a single bill, because republicans kept complaining and asking for changes, but in the end they still voted against it, so it was just a ploy to delay and block anything from being passed by democrats out of spite.

As a Republican, listening to Obama is so refreshing. Even when we don't agree, I can at least understand his position clearly and directly. Definitely comes across as someone you could have a respectful, rational discussion, even when you are on opposite sides of policy. Unfortunately, I don't see anyone like him in temperament in either party with any real chance making through the primaries.

I was really sad when he left the White House-but now as he’s MIA and our country is circling the drain after he started a resentment that at the White House press corps dinner humiliating Trump that our entire nation has been paying for ever since, his ego has caused us to lose our democracy and he is the one to blame for everything that’s come to pass. Trump would have never run for office had Obama not humiliated him so publicly. So fuck Obama.

How people could listen to this man and be as rabidly against him as they were/are . . . it has to boil down to pure racism. Well, also jealousy at seeing someone so superior to themselves intellectually and personally . . . who is also black. I think it also scares the pants off them because it blows all their stereotypes--and sense of racial superiority--out of the water. They can't process it so their brains just freak out.

Failed? Do you have any idea how long these things take to improve? It is going to take decades for any system to improve to a point where it starts to work relatively smoothly. Canada's is still deeply flawed but when Canadians voted for who the most important person in their country's history they chose Tommy Douglas, the father of socialized medicine. He was labelled a communist just like Bernie Sanders was by those on the right. Like Obama said, it's a starter home. It's going to require many renovations.

Sure, I'm biased for him, but I didn't really hear any politics in his answers. I don't agree with all he said, but it sounds like a man doing the best he can with what he has. I love both Obama and Maher, and I'm very happy that they've finally met and talked about these issues and problems we still face in the Country. It's incomprehensible to me that anyone would think Obama has not been a great president, that anybody could think Trump would be a better representative and leader of this Country. Obama just oozes gravitas whenever he talks, such an intelligent and well rounded individual who clearly understands the complexity all these issues we have in this Country. In comparison, how can a simpleton narcissistic bigot like Trump get so many votes? I don't understand. Like Maher said before, "it's depressing to think that you share the Country with so many people who you share nothing with".

Calling people delusional while saying that a president can't do much worse than Obama is the height of delusion. Stock market levels, unemployment numbers, leaving Iraq, Al Qaeda decimated, Bin Laden dead, existence of an American auto industry, 20 million insured, restrictions on insurance company practices regarding pre-existing conditions, Cuba, Paris Accord, a scandal-free administration, restoring stability to the markets post 2008. It would be very easy to do worse. Out of touch with reality, delusional, brain washed? As you prepare yourself to vomit the talking points that dispute these points back to me, do so knowing that they can all be verified by observation, facts and common sense.

I'm speaking of his class as a politician, he just surpasses Trump in every way so from that point of view I wonder how this term can improve on things. Obama just needed more time. I'm not a Clinton supporter either really but I'd probably have to say, as an outsider I would have picked her because she has Obama's backing. Trump is interesting in the fact we have no idea how he will turn out, maybe it won't be as bad as people think, is it likely he will upset half the country putting crazy policies in place? Has he even the power to do it? The obviously media played a massive part in this, if they didn't keep harping on about Trump's bad wording and stuck to the main issues the people would have been less imitated by the coverage press. While I agree a lot it it was creepy from Trump, it clearly didn't matter to a lot of people so give up and go for another angle, which they didn't, which led to the "is Hilary a saint then" argument. the whole thing hypocrisy at its finest, a big part of Trump getting in. Obama comes across as a decent human being which is the difference, this farce would never have happened if he was running against Trump, he embarrassed him once, he would have destroyed him in an election with reasoned arguments and temperament.

Ok, here's my personal consensus on Obama after watching this interview, which is the most authentic I've seen him, and after seeing him in "Before the Flood" and how he's dealt with the Dakota Pipeline (where I'm NOT happy with him). Is this: He is a very intelligent, warm, and sophisticated individual with a profound sense of reason. He clearly sees what is right and clearly what is wrong, to the FACT, and does what is factually right in a way us people are like "Hell yeah Obama! Do your thing!" HOWEVER, in the pursuit of what is right and Problem-Solving (emphasis on problem solving), he is TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYBODY. Even in the way he constructs his sentences, he's trying to speak in a way that makes everyone happy, "win/win" as you'd call it. But in reality he compromises. - He wants to respect the Natives and preserve the environment, but still allow Oil companies to build their pipeline. - He understands the Healthcare needs for his people and demands it, but still gives pass to many of the chemical corporate practices for the sake of profit - And this is no news, he tries to make sure the Corporates are happy and incentives profit motives, and tries to still give the people what they need. And all in all, I think the worst part of Obama's run, is not himself nor his character, but the amount of compromises he's had to make, and I think he's trying too hard to make everyone happy, preventing further resolution. The reason why people liked Bernie was because he had just as much intelligence, warmth, sophistication, and will to get the job done and do what is right. But Bernie does not compromise on any of these issues, he was a man on a mission, much more "No Bullshit" than Obama. With that said, I think that's why Bernie didn't beat Hillary, the Electoral College/Electives were to scared to get him in, and at the same time I think that's why Obama won back in 2008/2012. I feel like Bernie's attitude solves problems whereas Obama/Hillary just wins you the seat in office because it "pleases". To simplify for any young kids reading this "Obama is a good guy, did his best along with some awesome work, but he gave into social pressure, and chose to compromise, just like any person would." In my opinion, Obama should've pissed more people off: those who incentivize profit over our people, corporate over our care, media over our minds, and organizations over our personal organs. That's my two cents, thank you.

JML689 As an outsider, I have to add to what you said and perhaps give a hint of insight. Obama is, as you say, a great individual with the right ideas for the most part. But America is, and has been so divided over the last decade and beyond. One side is fed zombie lies (Copyright to Bill Maher) and the other side is so ignorant as to opt out of vaccines. Obama chose to play the diplomat and sadly I believe it was entirely due to his race. America is a largely racist nation still, and having the first black president step in and try to run the show like Puppet Bush under Cheney, that wasn't going to fly. Look how much the polarized hate him now? Imagine if he had actually stepped on any of their toes. Please don't let Orange Hitler get into office. Sometimes it is better to do a little evil for the greater good.

JML689 anyone with half a brain would agree with you're assessment. Obama was a good president ( def better than average) but he was not an Amazing president. Because what we needed after two terms of bush/Cheney was a super progressive ( like Bernie) to pull us back from the crazy right. Obama would of been perfect for this election but not in 2008. Hopefully Hillary will surprise Americans and follow thru on the democratic platform which is giving into 80% of what progressives want anyways. ONE THING is for sure and that is Trump cannot become president.

Enjoyed reading your thoughts, in part because you put so much more thought into it than most commenters on off-the-cuff message boards. I will say this, though, in Obama's defense: Feeling a need to please everyone is, sadly, the lot of the successful politician is today's democracies. I adore Bernie Sanders, but I also believe her can say what he wants because he knows, in the end, he won't win a general election. It's the Ralph Nader effect. If Michael Moore ran for president, he'd be the same way, I suspect. The stakes are so much higher when you know you have a very good chance of winning. And with four-year term limits, the moment you're elected, you're either in campaign mode for reelection or in campaign mode for your preferred successor - "the legacy effect," if you will. I'm going to miss this president. I had many, many issues with him. I thought he could've been more proactive in foreign affairs, on climate change, on race relations, on the Dakota Pipeline, as you say. But he did so much, accomplished so much. Being in power - real power - is about compromise, and compromise means finding a middle ground with constituencies - big oil, military spending, overseas interventions - you don;' necessarily agree with. Jimmy Carter stuck by his principles, and was admirable in many respects. He was also a one-time president who was defeated soundly when he ran for re-election. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush - cut from very different cloths - served double terms, in part because they knew how to play the left-wing bomb-throwers against the right-wing crazies and stake out a middle ground. So I'm sorry but I can't be too hard on Obama for wanting to be all things to all people.

AMERICA - are you serious? Do so many of you actually believe that Trump would make a good replacement for President Obama? Trump is not fit to clean his shoes. WAKE UP and make your vote count. Get behind Clinton and consign Trump to the scrapheap. I have never seen Bill Mather show so much respect for the person he is interviewing. Consequentially, my respect for Mather has grown exponentially.

HAHAHAHA, why? cuz he has done such a star-spangled awesome job? Look at obamacare. it's horrible. I watched Obama's last SOTU speech and he was bragging about bin Laden's death. Bitch please!!! It was the military and the Navy SEALS like Rob O'Neill who killed Osama bin Laden. and then i watch these dumb fucks like Bill maher, Jon Stewart, Stephen colbert and others praising obama. Gimme a break.

At the time Romney and the republicans said they wouldn't go against pakistans ruling On Americans military on their soil, EVEN IF osama was known to be there. You sound so misinformed it's actually embarrassing.

You know that out of all the winners and losers from WWII the US is the only country that doesn’t provide medical care to its citizens. Glad you were able to afford the $4k but that would bankrupt many families who can’t afford a $400 emergency.

Forget about the politics, the difference in humility, intelligence, integrity, honesty, etc. almost every measurement of a person's intellect and personality is completely off the charts. It demonstrates that a narcissist sociopath is almost a different species. And half this country is either so gullible or deranged to prefer what we have now to the previous administration. Hillary had of 95+ % chance for much of October. Following FBI's 'intervention' in the election, that number has dropped to 70. So, with 3 days out, it's 70/30 in favor of Clinton.

It’s a pity so many out there on both sides, Conservative and Liberal, are unable to see past policy differences to the core of who people are. I have many times said that Lindsey Graham or John McCain are men who I disagree heartily with but who have my respect for their way of comporting themselves. I hope your attitude rubs off on others and we can get back to a place of discussion and debate in this country without all the hatred.

Well done, my friend. It takes intellect to appreciate intellect. I wish I didn't feel the need to praise you for a simple "I disagree, but respect", but it's in such short supply these days. These are depressing times, and then I'm not even an american. Even though this has escalated to new heights in the US, I can see the same tendencies of national splintering and ignorance growing over here in Europe. "This side is what I agree with, so everything and everyone on the other side must be bad, and everything on this side must be good!" is the prevailing logic. I've had this uneasy feeling around the unity of the West, and it's growing. I don't believe it's going to end well, actually.

I admire your taking on the president of the country, allegedly the most powerful person on earth. Your discussion with Obama shows he is your equal. You both have respectable ideas on the same issues, but you do it comedically, which he can't for lots of reasons. The comedy makes it much more memorable in my opinion. Having said that, I have immense respect for the both of you. I wish you both could reach more people who have the ability to understand common sense and critical thinking.

@Super Sonic Great! you had it great? So let me tell you how the world had it. Libyia, one of the most developed country in middle east destroyed. The country that distributed the wealth. If person wanted to study anywhere in the world , government would help to fund it, if people got married they received the house, every person over 18 received Universal income. Has not have civil war, was looking to make peace with the world. Country destroyed completely, ISIS was put to power, as the rebels you supported turned out to be ISIS. Then Syria, same thing, the rebels you were supplying in guns, passed it to ISIS. From regions you oversaw the trucks were transporting oil to them for ages. That is why they grew in power. And Russia showed the recording and asked what the hell are you doing? Why are you supporting rebels who in big part joined ISIS. 30 000 kids died. Big migration in Europe where people who never wanted to leave the country , had to . Often people with no language, no opportunities, mafia formed on the borders, people sold everything to get out. Went to foreign countries broken with no funds no language and no cultural understanding often. The repurcussions will be in years to come. Luckily you got Trump who also asked what the hell you are doing and this ordeal has ended. And he was not interested in starting another war in spite of obvious advice from people who have different interests. So great you feel good and lifted by nice speech of peace and unity. He is a great orator and I am sure a decent human being. But he was not competent to make these decisions. Mistakes yes, well. He did exactly the same in Syria as was mistake with Libyia. He did not learn. So do not brag how good you had it when 30 000 kids died in vain.

Vega will blame these dropped plans on Obama instead of blaming the insurers becuz he's that dumb and biased. Employers basically dropped plans becuz they felt their workers would find better coverages in the exchange! And again Vega blames Obama instead of the employers.. but don't listen to Vega becuz he'd blinded by biases! As he's asserted thru out this one comment to everyone that's commented! lol

He had a hell of a mess to clean up after Bush, and contrary to what many MANY people believe, he couldn't just wave a magic wand and change America. That's just not how the damn job works, there are so many layers of approval and voting that shit has to pass through. He did the best he could, and it was a damn good job. I can't believe that after him, they could let themselves become so enchanted by the kind of person Trump is. It's soul crushing.

Thuringwethil Vaire I think that you very eloquently stated that point. President Obama did his very best at representing the values of America in a fair way throughout his entire presidency. Regardless of anything that the previous administration did or did not do and regardless of what may or may not happen during the trump administration, I truly believe that Mr. and Mrs. Obama continuously represented what we should strive for not only as a country, but as human beings. Mr. Obama may be weary of America's future, but he would never admit that publicly because instilling hope in people is more important to him than anything else. No administration is perfect and I believe that Mr. Obama would openly admit that there are things he wished he could have further facilitated, and he is humble enough to never admit that everything was perfect. As a human being, Mr. Obama has always had his heart in the right place, and I always found him as a tremendous inspiration as to something we can all strive for as people, whether democratic or republican.

Hello all, friendly reminder, regardless of you views on politics. The best plan of action is voting Hillary in, and then voting in progressive senators to congress on the down ballot. Vote because we need to help people like Elizabeth warren and Bernie sander, we need to help senators and representatives like them actually pass laws in congress. The GOP has failed us and became the party of obstruction. Do you want congress to actually become useful again? Vote democratic in 2016. Let's get this country moving again.

***** No im serious, if you think both candiates suck, im with you. But you know who sucks the most? congress. Did you know that these past 6 years congress has been run by a GOP majority? The past 6 years they have been grinding the government to a hault and getting no work done. Obama and democrats have introduces legislation to help gay people, women, minorities, small business, Bernie sanders and warren alone have introduced real change. Hell Obama gave congress a bipartisan conservative leaning judge with an impeccable record. And they still blocked the Judicial nomination!!!! It's clear that the GOP and Trump don't want change and they don't want to work together with anybody. It's time me oust them. Is hillary perfect? No. But she will help out our progressive senators and representatives pass menaingful laws that serve this country rather than give us 4 more years of nothing but fillabusters and stalemates.. C'mon, stop blaming immigrants, muslims, gays and minorities on your problems. It's congress, we haven;t gottenb any meaningful work done in over 6 years because of the GOP run congress!!! Lets make america GREATER than it already is. Vote Democratic this election and help support progress for the future, not some ass backwards mentality.
