I came here again to review for my test. Still super helpful! My book has this structure of "Present Perfect + Since + Past Simple" vs "Present Perfect + Since + Present Perfect". Can you explain this concept please? Thank you so much. :'(

Hi, sorry for responding late. I see that you're at Desautels! I also went to Desautels. I believe I gave some examples in the video... e.g., I have been with Susan since I was a boy. The present perfect represents the thing/state still happening/still true now, whereas the 'past simple' represents something that is completely done in the past/period in the past (i.e., when you were a boy). Hope that helps!

Hi🤗 Could I ask please whether I could say "just, already" in a past simple sentence or not? E.g. 1) Did you understand what I JUST SAID? Or must I say 2) Did you understand what I'VE SAID? I guess I ought to use the second one but I've heard No1 several times🙄 Do you want a coffee? 1) No, I ALREADY HAD one 2) No. I'VE ALREADY HAD one I am supposed to use the 2nd one, aren't I? However, I am still wondering if it'd be a rule that I could break in everyday conversation. Thank you, sorry for my broken English 🙈 I hope I've been able to explain myself

No, very common question. Honestly, both are okay. The present perfect in this case is more common in UK English, but even there things are changing. Everyone will understand both. Another thing to note is that the past simple is used a lot without referring to a specific time period but the speaker is thinking of that time period or it is known based on the context. For instance, 'Did you eat?' (Might use past simple here because you assume the person did eat... Have you eaten is a more open question as in you're not sure) and the response 'Yes, I already did' (as in you are thinking 'I already ate this morning'). Anyway, like I said, this is really not something to focus on and I know being Italian you'd prefer the past simple in this case because it's an easier connection to make in your head... so go with that... language is evolving and both forms are accepted now. Just make sure you use the present perfect for the examples I had in the video because the past simple can't be used there 😁
