Preparing for the soft top installation & fixing the windscreen to cowl gasket. Bugeye Build Ep 133

The top frame for the Frogeye gets a fresh coat of paint and the top bars are installed in the soft top. I also correct the installation of the windscreen frame to cowl gasket.
Here's the link to the top I purchased: tinyurl.com/29t9rux4
Just a quick disclaimer... this may not be the "correct" way to do this job but it's how I did it with what resources I have on hand.

It always surprises me to see one of my sets of side windows from my 58 Sprite as canvas and plastic over an aluminum frame earher than perspex inside a frame. They need refurbished, but i doubt ill do it, they're so impractical that i just can't see using them. At least the later ones can open. As usual, good job, came out factory fresh!

A pair of frames for the old style side curtains came with the car. Sold those and found this set. The sliding ones do seem a lot more practical.

Nice Top. Does it have the rear window that zips open? Not sure if the aluminum slate in the front will hold up. When I install my top I hook it up in the back and then stretch it over the windshield. If the top is really cold you really have to muscle that metal bar if the front. I really struggled with my side curtain weather stripping. God it was hard. I used a heat gun to warm up the plexiglass to install them. Not hard. Can you get a back window for that hard top? It will be perfect for those Northern Winters :) I've driven my bugeye in around 30F with the top up and the heater going and very comfortable.

Thanks Mike. The window on this top does not zip open. I'll see how things work out with the aluminum front bar and go to steel if necessary. I believe there's a couple of sources for the back window... most likely acrylic rather than glass. I had the heater going on a quick drive yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised how much heat was coming through to the footwell!

I had the same question about the front bar being aluminum. Getting the top stretched to slip under the groove in the windshield can take some real persuasion. It will be interesting to see if the aluminum can hold up to the pressure.

I have three or four top bows and one or two of them are the two piece variety. Are the two piece bows identical to the one piece with the sole exception of them being two pieces? The gray looked good on them. I think that was the exact same paint I used one of the bars I refurbished and sold.

As far as I know both versions are mechanically the same. The two piece is easier to store as it will fit in the boot and I believe it came with a bag or case when new.

I had a two piece and a one piece bugeye top frame. I used both on the car and could not tell the difference. I ended up going with the two piece because it was more practical.

I don't know where you got the information the rubber windscreen to body seal was to be folded under itself. This is absolutely not true. I have restored more than a few Bugeyes in my time and none of them came with the rubber folded under itself. The windshield wiper chrome bezels were overlapped with the rubber right out of the factory. Ultimately it is your car and you can do anything you want during the rebuild, but that is not original practice with that seal.

Thanks for this Michael. I've seen a number of usually reliable sources indicate that it was supposed to tucked under but this is the first definitive answer I've got to that question.

Hi Ian, Mike is right the seal should NOT be tucked under the windshield.
