It appears children in Japan have much better school and home environments, here in South Africa 🇿🇦 you kind of just ditch your kid at school and leave, yet our education is surprisingly good

I taught preschool in the US for twenty years and the kids are required to bring blankets to sleep on. However, the parents didn’t have to sew bands on them. That’s a bit too much! Wolfy seemed very cheerful and excited but you guys looked exhausted. 😂 Don’t worry too much. I’m sure that he will adjust well. He’s such a sweet little guy🥰🥰

I have twins and I always had to send 2 sets of clothes and a pair of extra shoes to daycare just in case. Extra expense for sure, but, my husband and I both work full time in IT and my twins love their daycare. Now they're in elementary school, so it's not quite this involved. The days are long, the years are short.

We are in a similar situation with our daughter! She will be switching daycares this fall - she'll be around the age Wolfy was when he switched too, so I'm interested to see this! We love out current smaller daycare but she finally got a spot in a more "educational", bigger daycare that's also closer to our home. I'm excited but not looking forward to having her "integrate" in a new daycare, with half-days and such! It's such a pain for our work schedule, as you said. We'll get through it too! It's what's best for her :) I've never seen the towels thing - the new daycare will provide (and clean) the mattress covers for the naps. I'm very glad!

nurseries in Australia have mini sheets to put into the beds and are changed and washed after every use, even during covid times. for the money people pay to send their child to daycare, I think it should be included. nappies are also included so the only thing parents have to bring are spare clothes, a water bottle and blankies if the child wants one

Wow so much involved. My boy just started day care in Australia. We just drop nappies off when needed and I just leave the whole box. Formula/pumped milk and a change of clothes and they provide everything else. Bibs, sunscreen, hats, baby wipes etc. I do feel pretty fortunate. It’s stressful enough with a 1 year old.

As a preschool teacher I like the idea of having that extra pair of emergency shoes. My guess would be that they want them in case of potty accidents. There have been many times where a kid has had a pee accident that's gone down their legs and into their shoes. When that happens you have to do the best you can to wash out the shoes, then dig through our collection of extra shoes hoping that you can find a pair that fits.

I am from the Czech Republic. When I went to kindergarten (2005-2007), the only things I had to bring with me were slippers and an apron. The only requirements for a child is that they can no longer use diapers and they must be able to tie their shoelaces. Right in the nursery they had their own little mattress with a duvet and pillow, so the parents didn't have to worry about anything.

Here in the US, I think it's very heavily dependent on your area and poverty rates for different rules or expectations. In "nicer" areas with "nice" schools (i.e. wealthier areas that are less ethnically diverse), you might be required to have shoes, plus an extra pair. In lower income areas, there isn't any shoe requirement, you wear what's on your feet. How I've experienced it as a parent is more wealthy people are more comfortable with more extras. In a poorer school, the kids go on a field trip wearing whatever they have on. If a school has money, you'll see all those kids wearing matching special shirts the school creates, plus maybe hats and sunscreen. Income levels greatly affect the school experience. As far as sewing bands on towels- in America, you'd never do that because every last tiny thing is monetized. There is such a heavy emphasis on buying things that the vast majority of people don't make ANYTHING themselves. You go to the store and buy it. In fact, it feels rare for a person to even think of making something themselves, honestly. I make things myself and sew and people think this is crazy or something. One last thing- here in America, where I live, there is a LITERAL 3 year waiting period for people to get into what they call "Universal Pre-K". This is school like nursery school. It's considered better for children as it is educational and kids who go to them do far better than peers. In many cases, it's not even a wait list, it's a "lottery." You go on a list to get the opportunity to do a lottery and those who get chosen get to go to the program. If you don't get to place your child in the Universal Pre-K, you have to pay for private school. This can be VERY expensive (something like $2000 US a month for younger kids). Daycare (which is only a person watching your child, but no guarantee of education, and some daycares have kids watch TV a lot of the day) is necessary to keep parents working, but most daycare also costs about $250+ a week for an older child and almost $2000 a month for infants to toddler aged children. In America, there is also no paid maternity leave guaranteed, no guaranteed paternity leave. So a woman would give birth, immediately try to get her child into a wait list when they're born, adjust to life becoming a parent, have to possibly go back to work shortly after giving birth (some women cannot afford to stay home at all- they use ALL of their sick time, then paid vacation days (but some people don't even get that) before they're able to use a couple of weeks of UNPAID leave). Then, they have to repay the high hospital costs of giving birth (WITH insurance, it's THOUSANDS of dollars to give birth and tens of thousands if you have something like a c-section). When it's finally time for preschool, parents are so incredibly stressed if they didn't have a lot of money saved up before having kids and if they cannot afford private nursery and they cannot get into Universal Pre-K, they don't go to school at all until the child is 5-6. For many people, this is normal, but there is also a reason children don't learn manners, etiquette, and how to be a part of a society in their first couple of years of school like in Japan. Here, test scores are so important, they jump straight to academics and test scores.

Having worked at a preschool I can tell you it's surprising how often kids manage to pee on their own shoes. Then of course, there's things like mud, vomit, etc.

Is it common for kids to start nursery school before they're potty trained? Maybe so in Japan, but is it the case elsewhere?

@@ponyexpress2724 I am in South Korea and I've been here for a few years now. Even in places like Nebraska and California both places I have previously worked in my travels you can certainly find "educational daycares" or something named along those lines that essentially function as a preschool. Of course, many American daycares are just some minimally supervised box you toss you kids in but, not all. This unfortunately requires both money and research on the parents part due to the way the US approaches preschool although, that's basically the case here too, but not all nations do it like this, some even have universal public preschool with proper curricula. In the states some Preschools are also attached to daycares that have a full curriculum for every group with age divisions like PreK is 3-5, Toddlers 2-3, Pretods 1.5-2.5 (depending on a few factors), Older infants-the lines often blur here- and infants. With a few items like requirements a child must meet before "graduating" to the next group such as toddlers must be potty trained before they can move to Preschool. Of course, accidents still happen especially with the 3 year olds, and you get things like peed on shoes.
