Preparing Feral Cat Houses for Winter

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Download building plans for these feral cat shelters: fivercats.com/
Take a tour of feral cat shelters made by my husband for our community cats. We fill the houses with straw to keep the cats warm all winter long. Straw has less moisture than hay, which keeps it from freezing in damp weather. You can also line the inside with styrofoam sheet insulation. Be sure to get your neighborhood cats spayed and neutered and provide them with regular food, water (in a heated bowl for winter), warm, dry shelter and vet care when needed. Please share this video and help keep feral cats warm this winter.

    @@freewaybaby Giving credit to a god is uncalled for and negative. Don't attack me for giving you the truth that you can't grow up and handle. Stop being a cry-baby. For heaven's sake, learn how to take someone else's learning and wisdom without your head exploding in rage. Good thing the witch burnings, Crusades and Inquisition are over, right Marcy? Or I'd be a goner. Good thing we have a RIGHT to say what we know in these times and Christians FOR ONCE, don't get to bully. Why don't you SHUT-UP for once? I did tell the man he was wonderful for what he did and THEN I said it wasn't any god who made him do it. I said it again, now off with you and scream and and kick on the floor because I dared!!

    @@kayleyblackwell1622 There was no distaste on my side as far as Marcy as a person or a Christian. I have Christian friend and family (yadda, yadda, I know how it sounds). lol but I do and I love them. What I find distasteful is when a Christian cannot thank anyone without giving the credit to someone else, i.e their particular god. There are many of us who don't have gods and realize that they are not real and that the bible is just one of many myth stories from long ago that is clung to. I don't believe in it. And I don't have to and I can speak the truth about it and shouldn't be attacked as though I'm being hateful for doing so. It's not hate. Speaking the truth isn't hate and shouldn't be seen as such. Thank you for trying to be kind. I appreciate it. It's always better to have a nice conversation! I get a lot of angry backlash. I don't mind at all, I'm quite used to it. I think the anger is fear.

    FIVER CATS: Great video.....love the houses. One thing you could add is a "Snugglesafe" in each house. You can buy them on Amazon and are very affordable (cheap actually). They are a hard plastic disc that you put in the microwave for five minutes. It heats up the element inside and stays warm for 8-12 hours. You could put that under the hay to also help warm the beds. It's not a fire hazard since the outer coating is such a hard, thick plastic. They even come with a little cover.

    rubber roofing with an adhesive back makes a great material for waterproofing a cat house. rolls of rubber roofing can be purchased at your local lumber yard. this material can also be used on the sides of your cat house to protect the walls from inclement weather. when constructing the roof, make sure there is an overhang to shield the walls from falling rain. also make sure the cat houses are raised to insure that water isn't seeping in from the bottom. good luck!

    What a caring thing to do. I thank you on behalf of the cats! The fact that you spayed and neutered shows how much you care; how very responsible of you. If everyone would spay/neuter the problem would soon be eliminated and end so much of the suffering in the cat population. I adopted a feral colony several years, spayed & neutered each one. Little by little I tamed them all and they now live in harmony. I have no husband, no one to help with a project such as this.

    This is a great idea. I need a shelter for my cat. She moved over here from next door after last winter was over with. Chantilly/Tiffany. Doesn't have an undercoat. Worried sick about her for this winter coming. Made a temporary shelter on my porch out of a box (front entrance, bed and escape route) until I can get to a Petco. It worked fine until a baby Copperhead showed up. I really like this cat. Her being there kept my nephew from getting bit. That means the world to me. She was actually smacking the snake around. • @alexispags
    @alexispags11 жыл бұрын

    Connie, if you get the cats used to eating at a specific time each day, they are usually there waiting for you. You can put the food down and remove it within half an hour. This ensures that there's no leftover food that will attract other wildlife. Raccoons are particularly dangerous to kittens, so when possibly, be careful to remove excess food as soon as possible after the cats are done eating. Good luck!

    Hi Tori! We have some other wildlife around, but I haven't seen anyone other than the occasional squirrel venture into the houses. Having them a bit off the ground helps for skunks. Only putting out what food will get eaten by the cats and cleaning up bowls and leftover food when they are done helps keep other critters away.

    We made a cat shelter one winter when we noticed a few cats coming around. It was on our covered patio. We put an old table out there with a tarp under it. We completely covered the entire table with a plastic tarp. We put a heat lamp and heated water bowl and fed them daily. We put a lot of hay in it as well. About 3/4 of a way through a brutal winter, we found we had attracted so many possums and racoons that the cats no longer used it. Needless to say, we regrettably never made another one.
