Prelude and Allegro - S.L. Weiss on 8-string guitar

Here are two unrelated pieces by one of my favourite baroque composers.
The Prelude (originally in E-flat), is a very interesting work. The first half is an unmeasured prelude, meaning there is no time signature indicated. However, within these brief 2 minutes of music Weiss indicates several tempo changes. All of this adds to the improvised quality this piece is supposed to portray. The second half of this Prelude is a little fugue, which is very strict in it's rhythm and form. The two sides balance each other very nicely in my opinion.
The second piece is a single movement from one of Weiss' many suites in D minor. However, this particular movement is in A minor. It's a great first piece to attempt on an 8 string.
I get asked once in a while abut publishing 8-string music. So both of these arrangements are available on my website. In the spirit of lute notation, TABs are included, which you will appreciate with the odd tuning of the Prelude.

I heard both of these pieces on an excellent CD my father received from the Musical Heritage Society entitles Weiss Lute Works. The artist is Lutz Kirchof, and it is a beautiful all the way through. I don't know if you can get it anymore, but I listen to it quite often and it really influenced the way I play this music.

A sterling performance, Drew. Extraordinary tone and articulation. The fugue interlude is beautifully played and came as a surprise. A great choice from Weiss' vast compostional output of over 1,000 pieces. José Tomás would be highly impressed by your mastery of the 8-string, not to mention your musicianship.

Great Drew! S.L Weiss is also one of my favorite barroque composers and I play also some of his works on guitar, and you are one of my favorite guitarists. Your sound, articulation and flawless technique is to admire! Thanks for all the beauty and inspiration you always give!

Certainly right up there, that's for sure. "The best" is always a subjective term but, yes, I think that Mr. Henderson is definitely one of the finest players of his generation, without doubt.

@@klatklat508 As for thecnique he is one of the best, I agree, but sound? Not so much, I dislike very often his uncessary metalic tone...And you could say thats a matter of taste but I believe there are sounds objetively more beautiful than others to the human ear (music might be proof of that). And ofc his interpretation could have more feeling, more pianissimo/forte, more rubato, etc. He is nontheless one of the best around, Im sure he practices all day since forever, but "the best of his generation"? Please, you need more than work for that...as important as work is an exquisite sensitivity that I dont think he fully posseses...

Such an amazing player. Such immense control of the instrument and such enormous expression and feeling. I have never heard anybody play classical guitar like this.
This guy is the most masterful guitar player I think I am subscribed to. Every upload is played to absolute perfection. A master of clean and dynamic playing.

Weiss was definitely a master and I remember an introduction (I think) to a performance by Williams where he said that on at least one occasion Weiss met with Bach and with Bach on the Harpsichord and Weiss on the lute they traded off with a fugue. Imagine being a fly on the wall for that one?? That would really be something.

At MINUTE 1:48, is that a fuge or better considered a fugette? Much thanks. S.L. Weiss was SO talented a composer, and obviously as a lutenist. Thank heavens there are still a few equally talanted performers around at this late date to bring Weiss' music back fully to life. I put Drew at the very top.

HI Drew, nice sound. Every try improvising in Weiss style ? I did, it was fun they are on my channel, tends to give a bit more perspective on harmony, a visceral one like that which one gets from singing the tune whilst playing the harmony. On a good day Weiss lives through Michel Cardin and the proudest moment of my life was when Michel expressed admiration for my improvising style. I love the way Weiss lets serendipity shape his structures in a way Bach was too deft to allow.
