J.S. Bach - Sonata in G minor, BWV 1001
Музыка
0:00 Adagio, 3:25 Fuga, 8:23 Siciliana, 11:29 Presto
I'm happy to share my arrangement of Bach's masterpiece, BWV 1001.
The sheet music (tab + notation combo) here! www.classicalguitarist.ca/pub...
This is perhaps my favourite of his solo instrumental sonatas, and like all Bach, the more you play it, the more it reveals to you.
I've gone through a bit of a change in philosophy when it comes to arranging Bach on the guitar, and that is to only add notes when I feel the translation to guitar is lacking. Having said that, this arrangement is fairly true to the original, except when it was irresistible I added the low 7th string to fill out the range.
For those with a keen ear, you will notice this is actually in f# minor, which in Baroque tuning is actually G minor! In reality though, I feel the capo on fret 2 with the low C# on the 7th sounded best on this guitar.
Special thanks to Mark Usherovich for building this very versatile guitar. I love all colours on this spruce and maple guitar (just like a violin). The possibilities for arranging Bach are vast on this instrument, and you'll be sure to see more.
Also thanks to Alex Bougie and Ricci Ebron for assisting in the filming. It's very hard to film oneself, I couldn't have done it without them!

I don't know of any guitarist who can make each sound so clear and separate. I think this is simply because the note values are faithfully adhered to the score and the sound is perfectly muted. Due to the structure of the instrument, it is difficult to faithfully follow note values when playing the guitar, but he overcomes this with his amazing technique and concentration. I think it's not only natural talent, but also the result of tremendous effort and practice. I would like to praise this work as a milestone in Bach performance on the guitar, and express my gratitude to this great master.

Oh wow, thank you so much for the very thoughtful comment! I have to admit that the combination of the tuning and guitar made it a lot easier to address purely musical issues rather than technical ones. So very glad you enjoyed it!

I truly believe that classical guitar belongs to Bach. Giuliani, Sor, Taregga etc are fantastic composers, I can play them for hours by heart, but for some reason, the classical guitar, belongs, to Bach, and he never even saw one.

This is factually wrong in every regard. Bach never was blind, even in his latest years he needed an assistance in order to write and read scores, because his eyesight got worse, but he never lost his eyesight entirely.

His performance, respecting the author's will and minimizing the claims and demands of players and listeners, is very good. I think that is his understanding and splendor. thank you very much.
Such wonderful playing! For those of us that work outside, with our hands, and are envious of those that can grow their fingernails out to fingerpick, we love watching y'all play!

Most likely the best guitar performance ever of this piece of universe. Bach is the proof that the world is in safe hands.

Dear maestro, thank you for sharing this masterful performance with us
I feel like somehow I slipped into the song and swim in it and dissolved with the song... I believe that guitar doesn't have any limit in expressing Bach. It is such a mature conjunction of deep understanding of life/musicality, at play with a beautiful character. You are a blessed performer. Thank you for sharing. Bravissimo!

What an amazing performance. I love all your Bach performances, technically and emotionally unsurpassed.
Drew, this is an incredible and sincere performance. I'm in awe of the depth of your playing.

Exquisite and emotional, technically and musically brilliant. Especially the fugue. Thanks for sharing!
Stunningly executed! Bringing the magic of Bach’s music to life, amazing performance
I always find this master's output incredible, he can fix my attention on pieces that I'm not that "keen" on. I play as much Baroque/classical guitar as I can, I was not formally trained for long before playing electric guitar in a band, but I do know that Mr Henderson's ability is incredible and hard won. His technique makes me think - This stuff must be so easy to play...... Enough said.
Technically flawless. Precision and accuracy are razor sharp, yet your expression is never sacrificed. I’ve said it before, you are among the upper echelon of contemporary guitarists. When I listen to you, I am reminded of John Williams. Drew, you play with a mastery that is something to be desired by any musician. Absolutely exquisite! Bravo!!!
Magnificent playing and tone. One of the greatest recordings of this piece. The music is speaking to you! Few players have this gift. Fantastic Drew, blessed with the gift💫
Maestro, that was incredible. Your Bach is second to none. Truly outstanding and inspiring. Very impressive. A joy to listen this performance!
Simplesmente lindíssimo... Bravo grande Maestra
Sublime performance as usual!
Flawless version, specially the fugue. Technique is superb, but more important the phrasing and dynamics are outstanding . Absolutely loved it.
Really great performance! And what a lovely guitar!
Fantastic arrangement! Beautiful playing as well.
Superb in every aspect. Thanks for sharing.
COMPLIMENTI VIVISSIMI!!! La tua esecuzione così ben eseguita mi ha preparato una giornata radiosa. Complimenti al liutaio, chitarra molto ben equilibrata. Grazie infinite
Sooo beautiful.... And those trills are just 👌
Bach is my favorite composer and classical guitar one of my favorite instruments so this combination is very special. Excellent performance.
The degree of articulation this man has is next level. He commands emotion with perfect clarity, it's almost too good.
Thank you, Sir. Your playing, your arrangements and the sound of that guitar are beautiful and give a new desire to hear these compositions on guitar.
my favorite piece of classical music. beautiful playing!
This is a masterful rendition and a fulfilling arrangement of a "Sonata". And being that it is "Bach", I can easily put it on an endless repeat!! The capo adds a noticeable tension to the strings that make them ring out with authority. Simply a delightful performance.
An absolutely first-class performance that does full justice to this masterpiece.
Even pauses overflow with music. What a sound!
I’m seeing this for the first time and I’m floored….amazing bravo!!!
Cor blimey, what a memory, 14 mins of majestic tranquility. Bravo Sir
I fell in love with this sonata as a young violinist who was also learning guitar. At the time I imagined this piece would sound amazing on guitar but I knew I’d never have the chops to even attempt it, so it remained just a fantasy-an itch deep in the recesses of my brain that never got scratched. Until now. Thank you for bringing this to life and scratching the itch I’d forgotten was even there!
And what a lovely guitar! An art piece
Oh so delightful - thanks so much for posting it.
Remarkable, brilliant, bright and beautiful Bach on the guitar!

The Stauffer inspired Romantic designed guitar sounds exceptionally good. I think the reverse headstock, Maple back and sides, contribute to the clarity and tonal balance. I thoroughly enjoyed Drew's exquisite playing and musical sensibilities. Bravo!

Beautifully performed😊 Reverse headstock? Isn't that headstock in the usual placement? I'm really intrigued by what appears to an extra free floating low string.... It doesn't seem capped from several angles
@picksalot1
6 ай бұрын
@@djimiwreybigsby5263 "Reverse Headstock" is in the sense of String Length. On a traditional Fender Strat, the 6th string has the shortest string length to the tuning peg from the bridge/tremolo unit. On the Stauffer, the shortest string length is to the 1st string. This difference in overall string length makes it possible to get an advantageous string length on the lower strings without having to go to excessively high string gauges.
@djimiwreybigsby5263
6 ай бұрын
@@picksalot1 thanks for the string length explanation... But does it really matter when the vibratory string action essentially stops at the nut and bridge... What I really like about this video is how the camera angles reveal an extra free floating low string... Unless my eyes are being tricked; Which is entirely possible at my advanced age... I'm very curious about that instrument :)
@picksalot1
6 ай бұрын
@@djimiwreybigsby5263 Yes, it does matter, as string tension is a combination of several interaticive factors, including total string length, string gauge, and tuning pitch. The saddles and nut are just specialized frets. Tuning pitch is a matter of "Scale" length (bridge saddle to nut) and string tension.
