Unlike the suites for unaccompanied cello or the sonatas and partitas for solo violin, Bach’s works for solo lute do not seem to have been conceived as a group. They include a variety of compositions written in different styles and span a fairly long period of his creative life; the E minor Suite BWV996 dates from Bach’s time in Weimar, while the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro BWV998 is believed to have been composed during the last years of his life. Although some pieces are more idiomatic than others, they all make taxing demands on the performer.
There is no evidence that Bach actually played the lute himself, but he was clearly interested in the sound of the instrument. This is further illustrated by his subtle use of it in the St John Passion and the Trauerode BWV 198. Of the four suites which appear to have been written specifically with the lute in mind, Arcady Ivannikov presents the E minor BWB996 and the C minor BWV997 (transposed here to A minor). BWV997 is probably a late work of Bach’s and in the richness and complexity of its full five-movement form (especially the fugue) notably reminiscent of the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, which makes Ivannikov’s coupling so inspired (but unusual).
As a transcriber and performer, Ivannikov has taken a path of minimal intervention, attempting only to make small editorial adjustments to ease the fit of the music from the four-string violin to the six-string guitar. Culminating in the sublime Chaconne which was probably composed as a tombeau to mark the sudden passing of his first wife Maria Barbara, the D minor Partita is Bach’s most profound work for solo instrument besides the piano, and a fitting climax to this collection from one of Russia’s master guitarists.

I lost my husband seven months ago. Fifteen minutes in to this video, I let loose and cried...for the loss of what could have been, for for the joy of what we had. I look around at the photos I have of him and smile through tears. This music is so soothing, so healing. May God be with us all as we wait to join our loved ones. Accept Jesus into your hearts, be still and know He is God! Rest in peace, Robbie...I love you!

Yeah, even though Bach did not play even the lute himself, all his music seems to be even more wonderful and pleasant to listen to in good guitar performances and transcripts. He would for sure have approved, by the way: Bach, as many great composers, begun his career by transcribing other older composer's works for the new instruments of his time, not least Vivaldi

It is my understanding from reading many Bach biographies, that J.S. did definitely play the lute well enough to teach it and he did so for awhile when he first started working at one of his jobs, but he soon paid someone to teach it for him. He kept up his playing ability because he had a long and wonderful friendship with Leopold Weiss, the premiere lutenist of the time. Weiss visited Bach and stayed as a guest, during which Bach would play his latest lute suite for Leopold, who would answer with his latest. It was one of Bach's deepest and most satisfying friendships. The idea that the incomparable Chaconne is a tombeau to Barbara to denote her passing is a new idea to me that seems definitely probable. Not because it is in a minor key but because he had SO MUCH to say!

Are you sure you're not confusing lute and Latin? I've read a few biographies as well and none of them mention Bach being a lute teacher. He was however supposed to teach Latin as the director of the choir school in Leipzig but he hired someone else to do it for him. As for the friendship with Weiss, it seems to me your sources are a bit too enthusiastic. We do have a letter that tells us Weiss stayed at Bach's home for a month, and that there was music being played, but that's about it. Obviously you won't let someone that you dislike stay at your house for such a long time but from that fact alone one cannot conclude that it must have been one of Bach's 'deepest and most satisfying friendships'. Considering you read some biographies I'm a bit surprised you haven't heard about the theory that the Ciaccona was written to commemorate his late wife, because in my experience it's mentioned pretty much anytime the Ciaccona is brought up. So much so that I wouldn't be surprised if lots people think of it as "that piece Bach wrote for his dead wife". Actual evidence for the theory? Pretty much nothing at all. Except one musicologist claims there are hidden chorale melodies in the piece, all with death as a theme. I'm not saying it isn't possible but it goes against baroque esthetics and the view of a composer as a craftsman, and not so much an artist who struggles with his personal emotions.

Um amigo meu considera Bach o maior músico de todos os tempos. Sem dúvida foi o maior de todos os barrocos. Levou este modo de fazer música ao seu ápice máximo

Bach has always been good company.. I remember wanting to learn about music in my younger years, informally, just as mere layman who was looking for ear candy or something like that. I had met most of the known composers: mozart, Beethoven, schubert and the like all producers of wonderful insightful and magnificent music....but then I met the notes of JS Bach and suddenly the rest went into a second plane of importance Bach became spiritual company and is still present in my daily music collection/mental health therapy. It's hard to describe it as an ordinary person but it is a spiritual therapy. Viva Bach!!! PS infinite thanks to BMG music, Columbia records and other music companies that offered fifteen CDs for the price of two etc... 😂😂. Thank you souch
