Mackerel: gather in something called a bait ball as a defense strategy. Also mackrel: all die in said bait ball. Ok then lol.

It may be said in the video, but you can surmise that it doesn't work very well since it ends with complete death. If the video ends with the death of all of them, then it doesn't discourage predators. The video is, therefore, proof of the lack of a use for this formation; this gathering makes them die. If they die, then there is no discouraging of large predators, and it is bad for them. Hence the question, "how is this arrangement advantageous?" , since they all die through large predators.

EPIC FAIL for the mackerels. Normally this confuses the predators, but only when there are a lot more fish in the ball.

You originally replied with an idea about how this was advantageous. You are absolutely right when you directed back to the video, but we are all looking for a more comprehensive answer than what was given in the video. You can't expect to please everyone all the time, anyway. I also wasn't attempting to mess with you; I am just wary of people messing with me. Have a nice day or night, depending on your time zone, and don't stop trying to help people out. The internet is hostile, though...

I am guessing, upon retrospection, that it is a strategy against somewhat larger predators and not anything dolphin sized. At the same time, it is almost suicidal. There is probably some form of self sacrifice going on, to make this a viable life strategy. It is probably at a similar time to their breeding, that this goes on, and the bits and bobs that come off of the fish feed microorganisms that would otherwise eat their fertilized eggs. I am no expert, though.

So you telling me that they've been using this baitball for thousands of years as a defense mechanism and it never has worked once i wonder have they considered it not a defense mechanism but a suicide mechanism because fish arent dumb they do things like this for a reason guess we'll never know
