Mackerel: gather in something called a bait ball as a defense strategy. Also mackrel: all die in said bait ball. Ok then lol.
I was today years old when I found out birds could deep dive under water.

You didn’t grow up watching nature docs huh
I genuinely want to know how this is an efficient survival strategy. Maybe it works MOST of the time? It sure didn't work for those guys((
I actually felt bad for the mackerel at the end, LOL
Birds swimming under water?! DAFUQ!
nature is just unbelievable!
HOLY MACKEREL!
How is this arrangement successful or advantageous?
swimming birds?! Now I've seen it all.
If I was a mackerel, I'd be wishing that I were a tuna.
Mackerel sashimi is my favorite, I can't see how anyone could turn down that huge buffet
WTF SEAGULLS CAN SWIM?
GRATITUDE💥🐟💥
a feast for kings! poor little mackerel... :D
Dumbeat? You just owned yourself, lol.
biodiversity at its best this is a total beauty!
And if you are a tuna, you would wish to be human again lol...
ok seein the birds go down with the tuna and dolphins around in there was bad ass
Could you imagine the sheer terror the mackrel must have experienced while enduring this!!! Peta should hold a protest and throw red paint at the tuna!
It's like those fish were hypnotized to stay & get eaten.
dam nature you amazing!
F for Kokomi
HOLY MACKEREL is that were the saying comes from?
When frikkin BIRDS are SWIMMING to catch your ass, your giant fish ball is FAIL.
It may be said in the video, but you can surmise that it doesn't work very well since it ends with complete death. If the video ends with the death of all of them, then it doesn't discourage predators. The video is, therefore, proof of the lack of a use for this formation; this gathering makes them die. If they die, then there is no discouraging of large predators, and it is bad for them. Hence the question, "how is this arrangement advantageous?" , since they all die through large predators.
it says its supposed to help but their video shows it doesn't
mackerel in the middle? hehe
EPIC FAIL for the mackerels. Normally this confuses the predators, but only when there are a lot more fish in the ball.
That's why Mackerel is so expensive at the store.
This is making me hungry
lol sucks to be bottom of the food chain.... they'd prob have better luck spreading out and making a run for it instead of being an gigantic visible ball for larger fish and birds.
It is mentioned in the video....
I have nothing to say about this but I am feeling hungry now ..
At this point shouldn't mackerel be extinct from, you know, sheer stupidity?
maha puji tuhan mahanya maha, tanpa ijin dari mu amat teramat untuk di pahami
Didn't you even listened to the video?
You originally replied with an idea about how this was advantageous. You are absolutely right when you directed back to the video, but we are all looking for a more comprehensive answer than what was given in the video. You can't expect to please everyone all the time, anyway. I also wasn't attempting to mess with you; I am just wary of people messing with me. Have a nice day or night, depending on your time zone, and don't stop trying to help people out. The internet is hostile, though...
good to see those type of fish eat dat many fish
thank you mackerel for making tuna so fat and juicy
I was going to say the something similar. :)
Well then the answer he's looking for is all in the video.
not realy, it may have been more successful than it is today, the predators evolve to you know
Those who are in the middle are lucky
wtf... swimming birds?
My Biology teacher is making me watch this
سبحان الله
WoW sensitive!
Filet-o-fish.
Lol seriously? Imagine if fucking hamburgers or some shit were flying in mid air, in large numbers like that. You'd have a damn nice meal, that's for sure.
I am guessing, upon retrospection, that it is a strategy against somewhat larger predators and not anything dolphin sized. At the same time, it is almost suicidal. There is probably some form of self sacrifice going on, to make this a viable life strategy. It is probably at a similar time to their breeding, that this goes on, and the bits and bobs that come off of the fish feed microorganisms that would otherwise eat their fertilized eggs. I am no expert, though.
Omnomnomnomnom...
You're just too clever.
oooohh i get it, you repeated what i said. ahahah, how original
How am I troll? He can find what he ask for in the video.
So you telling me that they've been using this baitball for thousands of years as a defense mechanism and it never has worked once i wonder have they considered it not a defense mechanism but a suicide mechanism because fish arent dumb they do things like this for a reason guess we'll never know
And that is it supposed to ward off predators, but it didn't so the arrangement isn't successful or advantageous at all
Mackeral are probbly the dumbeat fish in the sea
Then that ruins the joke!
omg what a fail bait :(
There are two survivors
they want to die with dignity.. :))
If i wz a mackerel id make an epic, heroic kamikaze break from tha pack straight down 2wards tha sea bed,,, He who dares! lol
well thats a pretty big fail
so many lil fishys died
Bad strategy, back to the design board nature.
@williamb223 i was using my phone at my hands drag on the keyboard
Mackerels are pretty dumb, aren't they?
Decimate means to tenth, not to completely destroy. aren't these national geo guys meant to know something like that. its common knowledge.
I sense a troll, but whatever. 0:12 to 0:20
fishsticks
don't cry. its just a joke
Fish are really stupid
So the answer is, it is not at all, as evident in the video. There. You know what I won't bother replying anybody in this comment section anymore...
trololololol
That's fish genocide they need to take that seriously!!!!
look at god's amazing creation! jokes, god's not real
so it's kinda suicide group event of some sort ? weird
Fail
haha good point co-evolutionary fail!
i just realized why is this guy so annoying. He totally sounds like Glenn Beck.
