In the Philippines, there's an "alamat" or a myth that dugongs are peaceful people that were stuck on a boat in the middle of the sea escaping from an attack from another tribe and became "mermaids", aka the dugongs. 😉

The most closely related land animals that seals, sea lions, and the walrus are related to are dogs. Pinnipeds even evolved from them. The most closely related land animals that manatees and dugongs are related to are actually elephants.

Kudos to Abu Dhabi Environment Agency headed by Secretary General Majid Al Mansouri for taking into account the conservation and protection of the gentle mammals of the sea. Keep up the good work Sir. I will do the same here in my Province at Leyte, Philippines should the population of these sea mammals will migrate/converge here in our waters by putting up a policy to declare the area as a sanctuary thereby educating also our populace the importance of these animals in the marine environment.....Mabuhay po kayo Sec Gen Mansouri!!!

I love how this video is entitled 'What is a dugong', but makes no attempt to answer that question. No discussion of it's kindred species or evolution. It is important to know how humans affect the environment and the creatures that inhabit it, but when I see 'What is a dugong', I expect more than just an environmental impact piece.

I don't know if u care or not anymore or if u figured it out already. A manatee has a round tail fun while a Dugongs tail fin resembles more of a dolphins. their snout is different also.
