Bait ball videos always have comments wondering why the fish compact themselves into a nice grab and go offering, but man, if I was swimming around and saw them, I would think it was a monster and get far away as possible.

Could a bait ball theoretically survive total destruction if every fish in the shoal rushes downwards into the blockade of predators, removing effective hunting measures until they reach a safe depth. But I suppose the fear and panic tactics of the predators are supposed to prevent such occurrences.

Exactly. The predators use fear to cause panic and to cause the prey to self-destruct.

Bk Jeong The bait fish form a sphere because it is the minimum possible surface area that can be allowed for the school. Each fish attempts to swim inwards to escape the stress factor, resulting in a frantic swimming pattern and disappearance of preferred shoal structure.

No. It's not god's creation, it's a defensive technique used by small fish. And the tuna evolved that way. They are absolutely perfect hunting machines.
