Predator 2 - re:View

Ойын-сауық

Colin is back to talk to Jay about Predator 2, sketchy movie theaters, and giant pants. Predator 2 was not well received when it was released and it flopped. That didn't stop 20th Century Fox from desperately trying to turn this thing into a franchise. Is Predator 2 all that bad? Jay and Colin's reaction may shock you! (or not)

Yeah, I appreciate the possibility offered that the hunters are just extreme sport-hunting enthusiasts, hobbyists with a lot of commitment, from an unknown core culture, instead of honor-guard Klingons as established in the lesser movies. They give prey a chance to fight back because them's the rules of their game.

Danny Glover has stated in interviews this is his second favorite performance he’s ever done because he was allowed to be a proper action star. To do the Predator stealth mode shots, I think they use the same camera footage shooting the background, in layers cut into shapes of a sort of topographic map of the Predator, and they increasingly distort the image as the layers represent thicker parts of the creature. For the awesome water shot, I think what they tweaked from their usual approach is they also desynchronized the video on the layers, so each layer is showing the shot a few moments earlier than the last. This gives the splashes the illusion that they are wrapping around the Predator’s feet as he moves through his step, and even kind of look like they’re splashing up again when he lifts his foot, when really we’re just seeing one splash for each footfall distorted in time through the layers.

@@stevebernard1295 IIRC from a behind the scenes special years ago the splashes were recorded first; basically there were boards just below the surface with a little pneumatic hammers under them that made the splashes. They laid out a board for each footstep, firing the hammers in time to how they wanted the Predator to walk. Then they recorded the actor in the red chroma key suit following the same path and timing, then spliced the footage together as you described. Really cool shit for the time, still looks great.

The first I heard about Predator 2 was on some entertainment show, and I remember the hostess saying, "Unlike the first movie, where Arnold used his brawn to defeat the Predator, Glover has to use his brains to triumph in the sequel." Then I saw both movies and realized that whoever wrote that BS hadn't seen either movie, because that's the _exact opposite_ of what happens in both movies. Arnold outsmarts the Predator with the mud and traps, while Glover just beats it in hand-to-hand combat using its own weapon. It taught me not to trust reviews and previews.

  • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine

    @0neDoomedSpaceMarine

    Ай бұрын

@@OnyDeus That doesn't really make the comparison work. In the first movie you have the elite mercenary team, the baddest fuckers around, encounter a deadly alien monster they can't even _see,_ and they wig the fuck out. The deforestation sequence is a display of brawn with no brains, just panic, and they get picked off one by one as the movie goes, until Arnold's character is left with almost nothing, but he has learned enough important things about his enemy that he can finally outsmart him and win. In Predator 2, the planning and preparing isn't the idea or makings of Glover's character, that's by Busey's character and his guys, Glover just discovers this on his quests as a detective trying to figure out the truth of these wild killings. Busey's planning _doesn't work,_ he tried to be clever but the Predator still outsmarts him and kills him, Glover finally defeats the Predator by being a better warrior who never surrenders. Even when he realizes that there's a half dozen more of these beasts, he doesn't give in, he's ready to continue giving his all until the end, and that's probably why the other Predators respect him and let him go, complete with a souvenir. I never really thought about it until just now, but I realize that this is an inversion, and not a bad one, especially when you consider how the movie is generally pretty derivative of the first one. When you consider how incredibly quickly this movie was written, shot, and edited, that makes it all the more impressive. Predator 2 _is_ derivative a cash-in sequel, but a shockingly good one, all things considered.

Sensors are so cheap and sensitive now that you can see the heat differential and markings Left behind as you drag your fingers across the wall. You can decipher an alarm pad code, because fingers will leave behind tiny amounts of heat, ascending in contrast of the order the buttons were pressed. They talk about that in the re:View of the first movie, I think they were talking about the water effect specifically because you can see the water splash through the moving leg and that's not something you can just key out. My guess is like Colin said, they just used an air cannon and the moving legs are an optical effect. It looks good but the legs splash up a bit too much water for it to look like real footsteps.

The best thing about the first Predator movies is that they both start out as a different genre and then suddenly you're in a scifi action thriller instead. The First movie is the typical 80s Soldier/Special Ops and the second one starts as a gritty, Hard Boiled cop movie.

Regarding the FX in the alleyway scene: they dedicate plenty of time to describe this particular special effect in one of the making-of featurettes on the DVD/Blu-ray release, something that really stuck with me throughout the years, impressive as it is. Hours were spent to film that little episode: basically, they had to shoot multiple identical takes both with and without Kevin Peter Hall present in the scene. The whole puddle assembly had these little panels underneath the water that would punch up to simulate the heavy steps of the Predator. KPH would then have to act out the same scene in time with the effects. It was heavily choreographed and then put together in post as a single shot. I may forget a couple of things here and there but that's pretty much the gist of it. 😄

Hollow Man (2000) used the same technique I think; the wiki describes the repeated takes on a precise mechanical track, as you have said. To isolate the desired parts in that production, quote: "Where [Hollow Man] was outlined in smoke, water and blood, [Bacon] wore a latex body suit, face mask, contact lenses and a dental plate all of one color; green was used for blood, blue for smoke, and black for water" (Douglas Keesey, 2006) That film looked great and there's a couple of very similar scenes to the alleyway scene. I wonder if it was the same Sony fx crew.

Here's how I THINK the footsteps were done: 1. They started by filming the footage of KPH's footsteps as he walks through the alley. 2. They then did the exact same shot with everything in the same place as the earlier shot, but without KPH in the shot. 3. They then took the footage of KPH walking, and keyed him out with footage of the alley when he isn't walking, but with a compressor going off in the footsteps. 4. They rotoscoped some electricity onto it to cover-up some of the less convincing frames. They may have used a different lens for 2, or did something to distort the image a little (but not necessarily). Because the Predator's invisibility distorts the image behind it, nothing looks weird about splicing the two shots together.

He needs more weapons, he's more reckless than the Predator in the first film with how often he dives into crowds rather than always picking people off one by one, allowing himself to get more easily and more heavily injured than the one in the first film did, even the roar we hear throughout the film is a higher pitch than the previous movie.

_Aliens vs. Predator 2,_ the video game (of all things), has one of the best plot ideas for a Predator story: the hunter tallied a man as a successful hunt on its scorecard, but the guy got put back together with modern medicine, so all the hunter's there to do is put him down and make sure its stats stay cherry

_"The original AvP comic was great and is on a futuristic desert planet and has a similar plot to the movie. It’s like a avp space western."_ In the comics it's the same universe as the Aliens movies, meaning theres also Colonial Space Marines in the AvP comic universe, like depicted in the AvP first person shooter games. It's an awesome sci-fi action and horror setting because it combines xenomorphs, predators and space marines in a "natural" way, like they all just belong into that same universe. Something the movie adoptions completely failed to grasp, particularly the first movie, when they make the setting current-day.

Rocky V also came out along with a pair of Disney films (Three Men and a Little Lady and Rescuers Down Under). Fox had Predator 2 and The Exorcist III and they decided that for September and October they were going with Pacific Heights and Marked for Death

I’m not sure how they made the Predator camo effects in this movie, but I saw a clip on how they did it in the first one. They shot the scene twice with 2 cameras - one with a closer zoom and just the background. The Predator actor would move through the jungle wearing a red suit (to contrast with the green background). Then in post they would matte in the zoom lens over the red character. Genius way of doing this before digital effects! @RedLetterMedia
