And even later, when Arnold gets the upper hand and the predator can't see him, the Predator starts firing in all directions. Their roles had switched places.

They showed off Arnold's muscles not just to show off but to impress upon the audience how that Dutch was a pinnacle of a human specimen so when he fights the Predator mano a ma·no, the audience is that much more impressed with the Predator's strength.

It's more accurately a play on the classic short story The Most Dangerous Game.

Predator 2 happens in 1997 because 1997 was a predicted "El Niño" year. El Niño is a semi-regular phenonom in which warm air currents move across the pacific ocean, causing extreme heat waves and drought. This repeatable event has been noted for hundreds of years. 1715, the date on the old gun, was also an El Nino year.

What I also like about Predator, when you consider the "slasher" elements, is that these men are no fools. They investigate their environment and ask questions most audience members would. The answers often vaguely and cryptically offered by "Billy" ("We're all gonna die.") It's the same reason Jaws was so beloved. These are not idiots being stalked by a super predator. They're cunning, strong, and completely understand the FUBAR elements of their predicament.

@@MegaZeta Yeah that's why 28 Days Later works and the sequels don't. In the original, even when characters make wrong decisions, they're not stupid. In the sequels everyone just does whatever they have to do to make the plot happen.

Predator is fantastic with just subtitles, I'm deaf and I enjoy that movie a great deal. the physical acting and atmosphere leading up to the final showdown set the mood so well, it's a very well made movie.

That's cool info. I can tell my fiancee this is more reason why she should watch Predator with me, her being hard of hearing. Main reason still being it's Predator of course.

Predator 2 is filmed in "concrete jungle." And no one can convince me the makers of the movie didn't think of it like that. Also watching this re:View... yeah, Van Damme most likely didn't want to be in a rubber costume, because notice there is not a single mention of Kevin Peter Hall in this 30 min video, despite the fact he played in both of the Predator movies and basically made the monster what it is.

People forget that Jesse Ventura actually WAS a Navy Seal (UDT-Vietnam), and pulled strings to get a REAL army training officer to the locations to train the rest of the actors both in fitness and, more importantly, weapons handling and operational movement... This made a big impact on McTiernan and the overall feel of the film, as the actors really had to work hard, not just for the film, but for learning HOW to portray their characters!

Oh my gosh I thought I was losing my mind - every time I try to talk about Predator people roll there eyes as if it's a dumb action movie. This is the only discussion that talks about the high level craftsmanship involved in making that movie.

This may be off topic, but I think they need to do their own research for the stuff they want to critique because the movie Predators is not set on Yautja Prime, which is the homeworld of the Yautja. It takes place on the Game Preserve Planet.

@@nickhewes6860 Billy was also the first one to realize the Predator was willing to 1v1 if he tossed the gun and challenged him to a duel to buy Arnold, Pancho and the Lady time to get to the extraction. Later on Arnold understood the Predator wants a challenge and stopped the Lady from using the gun, drawing the Predator to himself as the last remaining adversary.

Jason Stokes Not gonna lie, I like any movie that kills a kid. Few movies have the balls to do that, especially if it's a violent death - cancer or something doesn't count.

"It's Shane Black, it's Predator. You can't go wrong." Narrator: "But it did go wrong. It went very wrong."

Love the part when Jay says "They don't have that part in the movie where the predator is explained by a character that knows about it", since that's exactly what they did with Laurence Fishbourne's character in "Predators" lol.

I agree with Jay about the opening scene of this and The Thing. We didn't need to see the spaceship crash.

I think it helps plant a nice subliminal seed in your mind for the science-fiction aspect of the film. It's the perfect little tease for what is to come. By the time Arnold and Carl are shaking hands you've forgotten about the ship coming to Earth.

It would have worked either way. You know they're walking into something exceptional, an extra layer going on, you get the strong protaganists and antagonist - but as a surprise element for the audience and characters it would work without it also.

It's the old Hitchcock difference between suspense and surprise. If there's a bomb under a table, and the audience knows it's there, there's suspense. But if it suddenly goes off and no one knew it was there, then it's a surprise. Both movies obviously went for suspense, but I actually think surprise works better - as both spend a lot of time building suspense anyway after the opening shot.

So, my girlfriend and I recently watched Predator for the first time. We were streaming it, and right around the "girl almost gets away from Carl Weathers" scene, the audio got caught in a loop -- nothing but jungle noises and ominous music that somehow was looping peefectly. Neither one of us was sure if the audio was glitching or not for a good while, because the non-verbal storytelling was just so goddamn good.

Gary Busey's vanishing torso aside, the warehouse scene in Predator 2 is one of my favourites of all time. An elite team who (having debriefed Dutch) know what the Predator is about and so prep accordingly to ambush him. They have heat suits to block the infrared, prep the place so its cloak won't work - the hunter has become the hunted as they skulk through the dark warehouse, the Predator unable to see them but slowly getting suspicious somethings up. The Predator adjusts his visor through the spectrum until he catches the light off their UV torches and then all hell breaks loose.

He also tried to take it on head-to-head and died for his trouble. Schwarzenegger's character learns from the error, and by the end, he knows better: he runs, he hides, he sets traps, he gets the creature to kill itself. Dutch triumphs because he realizes that a head-to-head confrontation will end with his opponent destroying him.

What makes the first film such a classic is the suprising amount of heart it has - McTiernan actually gives these characters great moments and when they die you feel bad for them.

You know what would have been a funny movie? A right-after type sequel wherein a bunch of predators are scouring the Earth trying to find Arnold, not to hunt him or anything, but to give him a trophy. Since he defeated the predator in the movie, he's technically entitled to a trophy, but no one was around to give him one, and so predator rules demand that a gang of like half a dozen predators just wander from city to city trying to find him and give him one of the dead predator's trophies.

Sometimes Arnold will deliver a line badly in a movie (Oddly I dont think there was anything wrong with the one the RLM guys decided to use to point this out) but on the whole I think he is pretty underated as an actor. Predator was my first R rated movie experience as a kid. My dad let me watch it with him, much to the chagrin of my mom. It was a rite of passage that I cherish to this day.

Seeing this in the theater in '87, the atmosphere in the theater was electric. When Jesse Ventura broke out the minigun I thought my head was going to blow off.

This film is definitely Arnold's best performance. Have to disagree that his delivery is bad. Strange accent, yes, but I find him totally convincing in the role.

I couldn't tell what he said after he tried to hit the Predator with the tree branch as a kid. I thought he was speaking German "Badadeeah" but now I know he's saying "Bad idea" and I chuckle everytime 😂

Back in 1987, my mind was blown with the predator vision. It was the first time I'd seen infrared on film. That and the "bunch of slack jawed fa**ots" line. So memorable.

I saw this re:View pop up in my recommendations and I remembered it just not sitting right with me when I first watched it, and it's not just because Jay and Jack lack the sexual tyrannosaurusness to truly appreciate this movie. I was reminded in the comments, that it's because they don't heap praise on Kevin Peter Hall who played the Predator. Kevin Peter Hall made the Predator a character. No other actor or stunt man that has put on a Predator costume has looked like anything other than a guy in a rubber suit. Kevin Peter Hall moved with incredible grace and agility that made that enormous creature truly intimidating and menacing. Look at the shot where you see the Predator jumping from rock to rock; it's like he's floating. It's a 2.3 metre tall monster that weighs about 300 kilograms and he's floating through the air like a ballerina. You just don't expect a monster that huge to move with the poise and dexterity of a dancer, but that's exactly what Kevin Peter Hall brought to the role, and that's what made it the Predator. It's not a laughable rubber suited monster, which is what all the sequels to Predator and Predator 2 have been. Clumsy, under-sized, rubber suited monsters - stunt men struggling to move and act. The Predator from Predator 1 and 2 was a terrifying unstoppable force that could not be overcome with strength or skill. When Predator and Predator 2 are talked about, Kevin Peter Hall must be mentioned and he must be given the attention and respect his contribution deserves. The reason it looks like he's floating in the rock scene is cause they definitely overcranked the camera. Probably to 36fps (or something similar). Having said that, I do agree. He brought a great performance, made a memorable character, and it's a shame he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

Honestly I've never had a problem with Arnies acting, yes you wouldn't put him in a purely character driven drama, but for the action stuff he's in it fits perfectly well, especially with how emotive he is with his face, in a drama film it'd be silly, but in an action film it's kinda just what you want as you don't want long rambles about how people are feeling.

Jay and Jack are right about the tight simplicity of the script, and appreciate that there's no clunky exposition scene where one character tells the others (and the audience) about the history of the Predator. There kind-of _is_ such a moment, though, when Anna talks about the local folklore and describes how in the hottest summers, the villages would be stalked by "the beast that makes trophies of men". As far as I can tell, that scene is pretty much the only reason that character is in the movie (it would be easy enough to alter the script to exclude her), but fortunately they don't dwell on it and events move on quickly to where it doesn't really matter.

What I've always loved about the 'deforestation scene' is the absolute trust that they have for each other. It actually demonstrates some subtle characterisation. They all step in without a second of hesitation and mow down the jungle.

To be fair, Jay, I don't see how Arnold's delivery of "My men are not expendable, and I don't do this kind of work" is bad.

Yeah i agree i actually think that this is the best Arnie has ever acted in a film, i felt like he was the leader of that team and he somehow was able to lead them and not be a big shot. The relationship between Dutch and Dillon was also great!

This character is a guy that spent his life in spec ops, he doesn't talk for a living. His line delivery is perfectly fitting for his character. The directing and Arnold's (and other characters) expressions tell the story, not the lines of dialogue. I served in the military, I know personally that many of my fellow soldiers were not very eloquent in their speech.

I would also mention the awesomeness that is Kevin Peter Halls movement in the suit, and the OST.

I totally forgot there was a shot of Predator flying in space.

"I mean, it's Shane Black. You can't go wrong." Oof.

13:45 Fun-fact: In the original concept, the movie was just supposed to showcase Dutch going up against the Predator without any other troops. However, Arnold felt that the character would need a whole squad with him during his mission.

I was 10 years old when this came out. I remember seeing this with my grandma. She loved these movies as much as me.

I know they dismissed her as "Lady" but I think Elpidia Carillo is vital to the film if only because she's the one who calls the Predator El Diablo que hace trofeos de los hombres. Man that's a badass name

Carrillo is also the only one of the main cast who had anything like personal experience with anything that happens in this movie (minus the space alien, of course). She spent her childhood being hunted by killers, criminals who gunned down her brother and her father before she turned ten. Look up her biography some time. In comparison, it makes the rest of the cast's lives seem like they grew up taking tea with the Queen of England.

In fact, it's the From Dusk Till Dawn moment -- "The jungle is hot this summer, always in the hottest summer do the monsters come" -- vital bit of fear-atmosphere in an already-pretty-amped-up film.

As the matter of fact, several years ago one person made special cut of Predator, where he removed every spoken line. The final cut was about 1 hour 20 minutes and it's awesome.

I'm scratching my dumb head about the "actual" hidden misogyny of Predator. In Commando we establish that "You're a funny guy, Sully, that's why I'm going to kill you last", i.e. if you have good qualities you die later; bad qualities => die earlier. So I buy that. But the guy telling vagina jokes-isn't he objectifying women and treating them as merely a tool for male sexual gratification, while reinforcing unrealistic beauty and vaginal tightness standards? Isn't killing him first a feminist statement, "hey, no pussy jokes"? And the vagina monster is the equal of men. In fact it's the equal of some of the best men. Even more, it beats a handful of men. That says vagina monsters (women) are at the very least the equal of manly mans. Of course the defeat of the predator by a phallic object symbolizes the oppressive nature of the patriarchy. The fact that it comes from above symbolizes the glass ceiling. So really we should be talking about the hidden feminism of Predator. Either that, or I'm talking out of my womandible hole again. ;-)

My manager at my previous job was genuinely taken aback and hurt when I mentioned that Commando hasn't aged well. I even said it in the context of "That's why it's so enjoyable", but I think he genuinely placed it on the same tier as something like Die Hard or Predator. He would even passive-aggressively reference it in conversation throughout the years, like "Well, you hate Commando so I'll take your opinion with a grain of salt". It was one of those really profound realizations that our perceptions of the world can be completely different from one another.

It’s the „you youngsters“ syndrome. Show predator, die hard or T2 to a 20 year old and they will tell you how it’s a semi boring oldschool movie, that couldn’t hold a candle to aquaman 2. in Reverse: Watch a groundbreaking action movie from the 50s 60s 70s ( depends on when you were born) and you notice how it’s kinda oldfashioned. Getting older makes you appreciate art from older times, but we all still go through our formative years.

i always loved the scene early on when dillon, dutch and his team are on the helicopter preparing to rescue the hostages. it established the close relationship between blain and mac early on and shows how well the team functions together. blain offers his chewing tobacco to mac first, then helps himself, then offers it to everyone else on the helicopter. i thought the whole team had good chemistry, even if much of it was short since, well, people start dying pretty fast.

i remember watching it in the cinema with my dad who was a bodybuilder. We have never seen Arnold being so scared in movies and sent airborne after a punch. And we werent expecting it to be an alien movie! it was the nicest suprised in movies ive ever had. and the concept of alien was very new to me. I thought it its a hi tech russian soldier or a wild beast but it was wayyy better! and the theme soundtrack.....immortal status

It's much of the movie's themes summed up right there, its subversion of '80s action movies, the creature backhanding Arnold through the air away from itself.

Weeeeell.... we do have one exposition character: Stare Lady who tells the myth from her village of "el diablo cazador de hombres" and "el que hace trofeos de los hombres" to let us know about the Predator's preference for heat and the trophy concept. It's less than a minute of screen time, so it's not much of a dump. I'd still count it as exposition though, especially as the character's only other purpose is to explain that the Predator doesn't kill anyone unarmed.

LOL... no. Carrillo's haunted performance is crucial to what makes this movie work; at 25, this was her fifth Hollywood movie. She'd just played a lead role in Oliver Stone's _Salvador,_ and you better believe she won this role for a reason. Go check out how much more stone-cold brutal her bio is compared to the rest of the main cast. She came to this movie genuinely prepared for it because of how she grew up. Next to her life story, Arnold Schwarzenegger looks like a mincing princess.

Jimmy De'Souza, besides ruining someone else's career or actually being sexually assulted, I don't see how the accusers gained anything. You really believe ALL of these people are innocent?

Been waiting for this retro review for ages now. The grandfather of 80s machismo action cinema. It's aged like fine wine. I've watched this film more times than I can count, and it continues to get better with each passing year. If the concept of a masterpiece is gauged by how many times you can watch an expertly crafted film without it feeling like a chore (no matter how ridiculous the plot), I would consider Predator a masterpiece. Let's not forget that the final half hour of this film is damn near like a silent film. Unique for its time and even now.

Most importantly Sven-ole Thorsen was Killian's head of security "Sven" in another Arnold movie "The Running Man"

I saw on an episode of QI that they didn't use Arnie's voice-over for the Austrian version of The Terminator because when he speaks his native language he sounds like a country-yokel / farmer to other Austrians

The first 10 seconds of Predator is the only thing that keeps the movie from being a 12/10

I love how they were thinking Shane Black making *The Predator* was gona be good lol little did they know.. at least they got *Prey* 🤷🏽‍♂️😂😂

You missed Hunt of The Red October that was also phenomenal by McTiernan. He is very skilled in creating an atmosphere, Medicine Man is a good example, it's an ok movie but the tropical jungle atmosphere is amazing. I think Predator and the Red October were so good because of combining this with action scene skills.

The cinematography is so naturalistic for an action movie. colors look so soft, great skin tones. Makes the violence feel all that more real. Great cinematography.

4:50 Shane Black has said repeatedly, he didn't do any rewrites on Predator. They brought him in, but ultimately they just had him in the movie.

Yeah me too. I caught an edited version on ITV or BBC1 here in the UK. It removed Dillon's arm getting blown off, and instead cut to the others hearing him screaming in the distance

Thank you for reviewing this. One of my all-time favourites. If you’re discussing Arnie’s acting and the final act turning primal, you need to mention his scream in the woods when he invites the Predator to do battle. You may say he’s not a great actor, but there are some things he was simply perfect for - and letting out the single greatest war cry ever was one of them. ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Predator 2 is better, fight me.

The end of Pedator 2 is a nod to a graphic novel/comic where the Predator comes to pirate times in the 1700s and Adoline is some badass pirate that earns that predator's respect.

This movie has aged very well, all fx are practical and kept to a minimum (unlike the wild CG fests of today) and that helps to keep it fresh looking even today.

The muscle scenes are fantastic marketing and trailer material. Screenshots of those scenes work well as photos in cinema magazines and posters.
