#orchidcare #orchids #repotting
This video offers a 5-step approach to preparing orchids for repotting, minimizing stress and promoting successful recovery.
The video outlines a crucial pre-repotting routine for orchids, ensuring a smooth transition and minimizing stress. Here are the key steps:
Step 1: Promote New Growth (Optional):
Apply light doses of calmag and seaweed extract if new growth is anticipated. (Note: Skip this step if no new growth is visible.)
This provides essential nutrients for new roots or shoots and supports natural growth hormones within the orchid.
Step 2: Ensure Optimal Conditions:
Do not repot orchids without new roots.
Maintain ideal temperature ranges specific to the orchid variety.
By meeting these conditions, the orchid is better equipped to handle the repotting process.
Step 3: Prepare for Repotting Day:
Sterilize all tools like tweezers, clippers, and scissors to prevent infections.
Prepare a revitalizing soak with calmag and seaweed extract (100-300 ppm, 30% seaweed).
Soak the orchid, especially if roots are stuck to the pot. (Tip: Use a thin tool to check if roots detach easily.)
Ensure the soaking solution has a pH of 6.7-7.0.
Prepare the new pot and potting media beforehand.
Following these orchid care for beginners pre-repotting steps helps orchids adapt to new environments with minimal stress. Watch the rest of this 3-part series for additional tips and tricks on stress-free orchid repotting! This video also links to a video on when to repot orchids in old media.

😍 Sir Rick! 💐 good evening, from Spain, amigo!! I so appreciate you taking a moment to see what is going on, this side of the pond and the gracious, generous and kind shout out on your latest video! Thank you so much 🙏🏼 know that, whatever happens with my channel, even if what I need to happen does not happen, I will always pay it forward. I am a firm believer of mentioning channels, and do so especially in live streams where other channel holders are encouraged to drop the links to their channel. I do not get many viewers to my streams, but ... I am of the opinion that the orchid community is not always so encouraging when it comes to recommending other channels, so, if I can do something for other channels, no matter the size of my audience, I will always do that. I know how it makes me feel, and I want as many people to feel the same way 🙏🏼 bless you and your lovely camera lady, Rick! Thank you for all you do 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hi Nina, great video and yes helpful. Received my 20 additional compac Catts. I always treat them with your welcome home seaweed and cal/ mag. The orchids love it. Treating all orchids with anti fungal/ bacteria spray as spring brings higher temps and humidity, watch your orchids closely. Added more fans to grow areas. I will be there for your live show tomorrow, everyone should be there. I just saw a video from Rick L. Orchids, he had much well deserved praise for you. You are the Orchid Master, much ❤️ 😍 🎉

@@NinjaOrchids I bought two orchids from Logee's in Connecticut today! It was my first visit there and I kept getting recommendations to check it out. They have everything there: macadamia nut trees, goji plants, hoyas, and of course orchids! So now I know where to get vanilla vines, the coconut orchid, and some cattleyas locally. I got the the Rlc Amazing Thailand which has been on my wishlist for a while. It looks like I got there a little late because there were only four left. I also got a new standard size phal noID with huge blooms that are mostly pink and then white at the edges with purple stripes. I've seen this orchid before in person and online, but when I tried to ID it with Google Lens, it came back as being a Doritaenopsis. 🤔

🙌🏼 I'm here!! I am late, but I am here!! 😬 you are going to be in orchid shopping heaven and I am so there for it with you! There is nothing better than actually seeing the plants, being able to check them out and make a concerted decision right then and there. Amazing! I am so happy for you 🫶🏼 to read that they have other exotics... wow! Mind blown, and I am not even there! You got THAT one!!! I am doing cartwheel around the patio!! That is .... 🙆🏼‍♀️🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥳 I would have picked that up straight away as well!! What a find, Joe 😱🥳 now, to the doritaenopsis... everything you described as per the features of the blooms screams doritaenopsis, however, the bloom size has me in doubt if the google lense is not confused. You see, what I think is that the google lense picked up on all the intricate beautiful details of a doritaenopsis bloom, but cannot recognize the bloom size that is it supposed to identify. So, you may have yourself a standard no ID phal, a stunning one at that, and it may have doritaenopsis in it's parentage somewhere, but if the blooms are huge, I doubt very much that you have a doritaenopsis, if that makes sense? I don't want to burst your bubble with this observation of mine, from a distance, but in case you were also confused 🤔 this is what I think happened and one day Google lense will be advanced enough that bloom size / proportions will factor in. You will get another clue, when your orchid has acclimated and starts to grow vegetatively. If she is a slower grower than your other phals, and she isn't as generous on the root front, then yes, definitely doritaenopsis features in her ancestry! Thank you so much for taking a moment to join me on the patio! Truly appreciate your time and I am sorry if I was not able to follow the chat as much as I would have liked to 🫶🏼 have a great evening, when you get there ❤️

Great video, Nina! in my case, I use Hormex by the brand "Ramgo". It's like superthrive equivalent here in our countey but I think it's much more better. I water the new orchids or the old ones that I need to repot with water mixed with this product around 2-3 times just a week before I repot! and they don't even show stress! just less than a week after doing so, new root tips are already appearing and available eyes are plumping up on the divisions I made. This product is also great for cut flowers, just for example a spike was already blooming and has still some buds to open, but accidentally the spike was broken, you can also use this product as an additive to the water and put the cut spike in there and it'll supply nutrients to the spike for some time and it'll make the buds grow and still open even though it's not even on the plant anymore~ I've only started using it this month and it's already working nicely. Will surely make a video in the future once I get the hang of it and I really see constant and amazing results! 💚

Hi Nina, I'm having trouble with the 2 rescue orchids, had to remove them from pots, back into semi hydro as they were not stable enough for the leica. New roots and leaves growing, then likely not enough air flow near a grow light, combined with not enough energy for myself to deal with orchids while I'm mending from injury. Anyhoo, roots rotted and lost an older leaf on each plant, roots growing again. Wondering how long they need to be before attempting another potting in leica. They have good air flow now on a northwest shaded and screened window sill. Am running out of enthusiasm for orchids needing extra care knowing once they have flower spikes they'll be returned to owner. Currently i have no other orchids. I am so very impressed with the prolific plants you have, and information you readily share. Thank you so much for your support. ❤🦋

I like to get a clean feathery brush and brush all of the nooks and krannies and then wipe down all of the leaves with lemon juice and water using a cotton pad or tiny brush for the little orchids.. Something I’ve been wondering though.. cal mag seaweed stuff.. I have well water, and I use it and alternate every couple watering with rain water. Though my tap water is filtered, and is mostly suitable for orchids (though probably and definitely not ideal to best) but it is naturally pretty high in calcium and magnesium I believe. I began flushing pretty often about once a month and with all of this practice, I have no issues with salt burn and such on my roots. But if there’s already a high amount of calcium and magnesium…can I just try seaweed fertilizer because I do have some and I do have a couple new orchids that came nearly rootless and have new eyes swelling. Is it dangerous or is there a downside to possibly using this seaweed or any fertilizer for that matter when it’s just two or 3 little roots on the orchid? I’m afraid I’m going to pause the progress of these new eyes as I have two coming in and I am already lucky because it came with a new baby growth that didn’t survive the stress of transport and had rotted off by the third day in my home. (Was shipped in wet compacted spag moss and a bunch of buried pseudobulbs rotting in the medium ) >_ Long story short Should i skip the added hormonal stuff and the cal mag or fertilizer? Or any one of these and not the others? I have been fertilizing very very weakly to the brassavola with two new beginning eyes. But I also am dreading a potting up of this orchid. Could use some advice if you have the time. Thank you and I’m sorry for the novel and for all the questions and uncertainty haha -L So nervous about these little guys. Can’t believe I have two eyes beginning after losing the lead growth of my brassavola hybrid.

Hi Laura 😍💐lemon juice / water 👍🏼 excellent tip! Thank you so much for sharing that in the comments 🙌🏼👍🏼 oh!! I am sorry that your shipment was not ideal!! It is super risky to send anything in the mail when the media is damp, but sometimes it is inevitable if the order goes out before the pot can dry out, or in the case of some orchids, the roots should not be allowed to dry or else they will arrive dead. Such a shame, but I am so happy that you are seeing some movement / bounce back. Go ahead and encourage what you see on the move, in forms of eyes swelling with calmag and seaweed. Make it such a weak solution though, that you feel as though it is not going to make any difference... it will help! They don't need much, especially when tender and vulnerable like that, so no more than 40 ppm of seaweed and if you have them in a set up that stays damp, then even better. After you have provided a little of the solution, give it 10 minutes and follow with a flush of plain water, just to keep the surface of the media free of any possible salt accumulation. You have every right to be nervous, and I am not going to take that away from you. The coming weeks will be super important. Being a helicopter mom at this stage is the right approach. Better to check and check and check again, if need be flush again before applying your nutrient mix in the next go around, than to think that you are overdoing it. At least this way, if something were not to pull through, you know you have done everything you could. Thankfully brassvola hybrids are pretty resilient, but the roots... we need to get them to pull through. So, at any point in time in the future, if you want to let me know of any other thoughts or concerns you may have, always feel free to ask 🫶🏼 and thank you so much for watching this video ❤️🌸

Great video to watch for my coffee time this morning! You might have said it, but do you equate new growths with new root growth? And are there any recommendations for those moments when you feel that an "emergency" repot is necessary? Enjoying a great Memorial Day weekend thanks to those who have given their service (and sometimes life) for us to be able to live in our great countries. In a bit I'll get outdoors and spend some time working on my orchids. Hope that you are having a nice Monday. Keep producing your videos. They are helpful to orchid growers everywhere.

HI Pat 😍💐 oh yes, I have said it, try to say it every time I mention new growth, in the hopes that I don't sound like a broken record 😆 but yes, if I make the distinction correctly in my commentary, then you should be hearing 'active growth including roots, even if there isn't a new growth as such actively growing'. I consider root growth, active growth, whether a new growth is growing or not. (hope that all made sense 😅) well, what would the emergency be to warrant a premature repot? That is the question because, there are ways to avoid a repot before seeing new root growth. ie Snails in the pot, Hydrogen Peroxide can be used while the orchid is still in the pot to eradicate snails and the eggs. You see, for me, the premature repot is the last thing on my list of getting an orchid to come back, or to help an orchid out. So, if you could help me out with what you consider an emergency, then I can pin point what I would do in a situation like that. Because, yes, there are occasions we need to intervene out of the best timing for the orchid, but what is going on in with the orchid to warrant that? I would love to hear your take 🥰 I struggle with saying 'Happy Memorial Day', Pat, so forgive me 😘 I don't know about you, but even though I only lived in the US for 3 years, it bothered me when people said that. I find the day to be sombre, respectful, and it is all in the name, Memorial... so many have sacrificed so much for not just the well being of the US, but for the world. I feel indebted to them, grateful to them and the families / friends that have had the ultimate sacrifice by loosing their loved ones. For me, it is a day of reflection and not exactly a good match for the word Happy. I don't want to be a party pooper, but given the choice that I have, I reflect inwardly and am filled with gratitude 🥲🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🏼 I hope that your day is going beautifully for you and your time with your orchids is a wonderful way to spend the day. That is where I go when I feel I need some silence and solace!! Thank you so very much for watching, lovely lady and thank you so much for your kind words right at the end. Ever so encouraging! Have a wonderful peaceful rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids I surely hope that I didn't offend you by my comment concerning Memorial Day. I didn't intend to say that it was a day for celebration only. We observe a solemn remembrance for our heroes who sacrificed their lives for us to have freedom early in the day. Later is a time for families to gather and usually enjoy a meal together (many barbeque outdoors) and welcome the beginning of the summer season (even though it isn't for a few weeks still). Our schools will be closing in a few weeks and children will be on summer vacation. As to my question: what about a plant that needs to be repotted because it was dropped in winter, let's say. Or, that you notice in fall/winter that a plant isn't growing well? Perhaps (as is my case) your large dog knocked a plant off its growing area during the plant's "dormant" season? I'm sure you have a logical answer for all these situations. I like to "pick your brain" with the "what ifs" to keep discussions going. Hope you don't mind that. If you do, please let me know and I'll stop doing that. May you enjoy a peaceful day in your beautiful garden.

@@patsfreund9164 oh, Pat, no!! Absolutely no offence taken! It was me just expressing how I felt when I was in the US and people would say 'Happy Memorial Day'... I was conflicted because, while I am not an American, I could not see anything happy about it. I would have to reply in kind, but it always messed with me... having lost someone myself, while not on active duty, if someone were to say Happy XYZ on the day he passed, it would really bother me. That was just me expressing how I felt, and I apologize if it was all lost in text and how I wrote my thoughts 🙏🏼if a plant gets knocked out of a pot while dormant, I would just reestablish it back into the same pot and wait until it breaks dormancy. While an orchid is dormant and one could take advantage of a repot, thinking it won't know any different, the roots are still doing something. The orchid is just not showing what is going on in the pot when it comes to absorbing some moisture in form of humidity. It would be a quick 'Oh no!!' and then just hurry it back into the pot, same media and wait for it to break dormancy. And, I love these kinds of discussions! Things happen, out of the blue, and many times these kinds of things are rarely taken into consideration in videos because so many different scenarios can take place, it would be impossible to cover them all. So, please, never shy away from picking my brain and I promise to return the favor 😉😅 I hope you are already having a great day, Pat! Thank you so much for being so willing to touch base on all kinds of thoughts, be it orchid related or not 🫶🏼❤🌸

I got a new plant today, Lycaste Phoebe x Zygonisia Cynosure. It arrived with exactly zero live roots. Repotting it was therefore easy.

Don Miguel 🥰💐hola jefe! 😅 honestly? when I read your comment earlier today, I thought, how am I going to answer that😂 I am so glad that Julie got in with a brilliant idea! 😅 you take the definition of community pot to the next level. I will only add to that, I wish you good luck should you one day get to tackling the untangling, separating and repotting. Be kind to yourself throughout the process 😅 My lycaste has as yet to do something by way of showing if it is going to bloom this year or not. But, congratulations on your beauty and I will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well 🫶🏼 from what I gather with mine, they are hard to destroy 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching, Michael! Hope your day has been fabulous up to this point and that it continues into a cozy Friday evening 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hi! Just found your channel and I really enjoy it!! I’m new to orchids (1 year or so) my question is I use spag. moss & bark and repotted around 5 months ago - since the medium has shrunk ?? due to watering do I add a bit more moss/bark mixture to keep roots covered? Thanks so much!!!❤️

Hi Amy 😍💐 wow!! Welcome! First of all a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for your kind feedback and for the videos you have watched prior, while I was not aware that you were doing so. How very kind of you, I appreciate the feedback so much 🫶🏼 If your humidity level are low, I would definitely top up with fresh media, and suggest that you use sphagnum moss to do so. Unless the roots of your orchids are chunky, then I would top up with a mix of sphagnum moss and seedling bark, so that they do not have any difficulty finding their way into the pot. (Even if you used chunky bark for the main media mix. To get roots into the pot, let's make it easy for them to do so and not have them wandering around on the surface of a chunky piece of bark 😊) I hope that this helps answer the question, and if it prompted further questions, never hesitate to ask! Thank you ever so much for leaving a comment, giving me the opportunity to welcome you and thank you for your support! I hope your day was beautiful 🫶🏼❤️🌸

You are very welcome! NINJA is also an acronym... Never In Need, Just Ask! I know, a little cobbled together, but it does get the point across 😃 always feel free to ask, even if you feel as though the information may have been mentioned in any given video. Sometimes, it is too much information all at once and before any confusion kicks in, please never feel shy about asking 🙏🏼

🌸🥷🏼 Nina San, hi 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐it is so good to see you! I hope that you had a wonderful Friday 🫶🏼 I have noted your request and will get to work, for sure. However, yes, please, if you use alcohol as a form of sterilization it has to evaporate on the tools as opposed to being used straight away. The evaporation of the alcohol is what is responsible for sterilization. Misting or soaking any tools in alcohol and using them while the alcohol is still present will not be an effective way of sterilizing the tools. Please do not worry if, up to this point, you have not let your alcohol evaporate. As your orchids are healthy, I am certain nothing bad has been transmitted from one to the other 🫶🏼 I appreciate you taking the time out of your Friday evening, to watch and leave a comment, 🌸🥷🏼 Nina San! Thank you so very much for ALL the support you bring to the channel as well as for your immeasurable friendship 🫶🏼❤️🌸
