Repotting Orchids Min. Stress & Max. Success | Tips You Won't Find Anywhere Else

#repotting #orchids #orchidcare
This video is a part of a 3-part series on repotting orchids. Repotting can be stressful for orchids, but there are ways to minimize this stress. Even though some root damage is inevitable, the orchid can recover.
Here are some key takeaways:
Repotting is a transition for the orchid, even if you are using the same media.
When removing the orchid from the pot, squeezing it can damage the roots. It is gentler to soak the orchid first.
If the orchid is root-bound, you may need to cut the pot to remove it.
When repotting, keep the roots damp.
You can clean up the root ball by removing some of the older roots in the back.
When potting the orchid, center it in the pot and position it as low as possible.
You can use a support to secure the orchid in the pot.
If you are using organic media, soak it in water before potting, but don't use calmag or seaweed solution.
If you are using inorganic media, fill the pot with water before adding the media.
Depending on your climate, you may want to position the orchid higher or lower in the pot. #orchideen #orchideenpflege #orquideas #tips #tricks #tipsandtricks #viral #tutorial #care

Repots have been so fun this growing season BECAUSE I have this wonderful friend in Spain who showed me the beauty of lava rock 😍🌺🫶🏾 I have so much fun matching the shapes, it’s like repot Tetris 😂 I’ve also started mixing some leca and pumice or river rocks depending on the moisture preference of the orchid. I am so grateful for all of the tips you offer and in your in depth explanations! My collection is improving little by little and it’s a blessing to watch. Thank you so very much Nina!! Great video! I love the suggestion about filling the pot with water when refilling with inorganic media. For those of us clay pot people, I try to hit garage and yard sales for used pots, then clean them up , because I resort to the hammer and safety glasses method all too often, and it hurts less if the pot was cheap!

Nicely done Nina, very comprehensive on repoting. You know I grow mostly in bark, a little lava rock and river rock. I presoak my bark mix and sterilize it with any antifungal/bacterial and water. I don't have to water for a week, it gives the orchid time to heal. Packing the bark mix is important it allows the roots to take hold quicker. Pack only around outside of the pot. Thank You so much for all of your guidance Orchid Master.❤😂😊

🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐hola from a beautiful day in Southern Spain 🤗❤️ great tip with the presoak and using antifungal / antibacterial products. Excellent nugget of additional intel and thank you so much for sharing that here! 👍🏼 Never did that when I was growing in bark, but I would adopt that if I were still doing what I did back then. Its a fantastic measure to take 'just in case!' Nice 👍🏼 I appreciate you also being specific as to where you pack your bark... I have seen people repot their orchids, and pretty much press down hard on the media all around the pot and then if there was space, add more media and press again. I have also heard people say that, if you then can lift your orchid up by the structures and the pot comes with it as you lift, that means you have secured your orchid in the pot correctly. That is just scary for me to even think about. The crushing and damaging effect on the roots in the pot ... I know it works because I have seen it done, but it only works because the repot happens with active new roots on the way. What is being crushed in the pot, though, as a measure to secure the orchid, I am not a fan 😬 exterior.... that makes sense as no roots would be there yet. So, being precise like that, is important, thank YOU 🌸🥷🏼 Amigo San for that added detail as well! And thank you so much for watching this video, for your positive and encouraging feedback, I truly appreciate you 🫶🏼 wishing you a wonderful day from the moment it starts for you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Something i used to do often when repotting regular house plants, especially ones that were rescue subjects and either extremely hydrophobic from being too dry or were pot bound heavily whether to clay pots or plastic ones.. was to soak them of course in lukewarm water.. but i also use to use one or two drops of a natural and organic Castile soap. And not only would it instantly start working magic on styrofoam consistency soil in breaking it apart and making it easier to remove but in clay pots, it would immensely lessen the amount the roots were adhered to the clay surface. I have yet to need to do this with an orchid but I’m planning to do it with my current Tolumnia in need of repot and so far in my experience I have never had any negative effects from this process of adding a tiny bit of oil Castile soap. PROVIDED YOU RINSE with plain water THE ROOTS, as soon you’ve removed the roots from the sides of the pots or the media from from the roots. Basically just get them free and then rinse immediately with appropriate water. I will let you know if this bodes well for an orchid when I have tried it but it was one of my best tricks when dealing with clay pots and pot bound plants. I know orchid roots are very different but I think this technique could be immensely helpful for lots of reasons. Also important to use a mild and organic soap and not one with added fragrances or unnecessary chemicals. Just simple a soap as possible. I have used a drop of regular dawn dish soap before as well but I would not recommend anyone try this on orchids unless you make sure the roots are pre soaked in regular water and fully saturated before you soak the clay pot and roots in the water with a drop of soap. I think this is what would keep them from absorbing a bad amount of oil to the roots. But I’ll let you know how it goes because I’m eager to use this helpful method as o have many times in other situations with other plants. Plus it has the major added benefit of keeping some bad pests from wanting to be in your media or on your orchid. Extra random note: sometimes I will infuse plain water with fresh rosemary and other herbs (carefully chosen) for plants that had bad pests infestation or fungal issues on its main structures.. but not necessarily in the pot.. then add a drop of the soap I mentioned before, and while the plant was still potted, I would cover the base on the pot and media with plastic wrap or tape and just straight turn it uoside down and dunk the whole plant in the water soap mixture and voila, no messing with qtips and scouring everywhere on the plant, you’ve done the whole thing at once and missed no surface while not soaking the media with a bunch of soap and such. Really only necessary when dealing with a bad bug problem or a spider mite/scale issue… Works great for scale btw. I’ve never had a reoccurance in the past So I’m just wondering if this is something I could implement in my methodology of my orchid growing enthusiasm.. haha And clay pots are always best for me if I partially wax the inside of clay pots or inside and outside of the pots (but not the top rim or the bottom on the inside and not the bottom outside so as to allow water evaporation at the spot where it will collect the most moisture. If waxing, I use Murray’s bees wax or something a bit more thin. and then leave the pot tonsettle with the wax for a few days before putting anything in it. I’ve yet to aquire salt stains or any problems with my clay pots and their aesthetics, even after 3 years of well water. Only salt buildup occurs where I did not wax and generally not much at all even where I didn’t.. This could be very helpful in keeping orchid roots from adhering so thoroughly to the sides of clay while still giving them something to grip. Again not certain as this is my first year with an orchid in clay. So this information may be useless but maybe not either. -L

HI Laura 😍💐 wow!! I have never heard of that before! That is super interesting and I would try that out if I were still growing house plants 😃 thank you so much for taking time to write your tip out in such amazing detail. I truly appreciate this 🙏🏼 I read your next practice / suggestion several times and my eyes just got bigger and bigger and well, when I got to the part where you wax your clay pots in areas of most importance while not waxing areas that are most important... I almost fell off my chair for the genius of it! Laura, that is an amazing solution to growing orchids in clay pots without, as you say, having roots get too carried away with adhering to the pot. I now wish I was still growing in clay pots because I would totally adopt this method 😃 Dunking the plant upside down when the infestation is excessive makes a LOT of sense because the alternative is to be on top of the plant ON THE DAILY to be sure nothing is coming back. I am sure that you could test this dunking treatment out on some orchids, especially orchids with thick leaves because their stomata are closed during the day. Depending on your media, how secure your orchid is in the pot, new growths advancing / not advancing, airflow to ensure a rapid drying out to avoid rotting new growths etc etc. There are somethings to take into consideration, but if it is a phalaenopsis for example, with the happy sap and mealybug attraction etc, I don't see why this should not work. I love your methodology! Work smart, not hard 😅 thank you, again, for being so detailed in sharing your way of dealing and getting around common issues that all plant parents encounter. Truly appreciated! As is your time watching the video, thank you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Another FANTASTIC video for orchid growers whether novice or experienced. From this video I learned to focus a bit more on being mindful of the "transition" period each orchid/plant will go through. It is easy to forget that plants, like all beings must go through transitions during their lifetime. I like the idea of using water in the pot in order to get the inorganic medium "settled" in the new pot. Sounds like something I can try with my orchids. I do have a question for you. As you know, I have repotted most of my cattleyas in small lava rock with a wick which is fed into a water-filled sauce (large pots have 2" deep water trays attached to the bottom of the pot while small pots have the usual plant saucers). This method has helped to provide a respite for me as I no longer have to water these orchids each day. (I generally flush each pot once a week.) Can I put some pre-mixed water-soluble fertilizer in the saucers for a one-week period each month rather than spray fertilizing? Thanks for your incredible videos. I am thinking more about culture and care of my orchids since I began watching them. May you have a great weekend. (As a side note: We have already begun to have triple digit heat in southeast Florida. Today we are expecting temps over 100 F due to the humidity. Definitely experiencing climate change here.)

Hi Pat 😍💐 thank you so very much for yet another KIND and encouraging feedback comment 🫶🏼 and for letting me know that you have been able to take away some nuggets that you can incorporate with what you do for and with your orchids.I appreciate you letting me know your time and support was worth it 👍🏼 I would give what you are thinking of a try, and see how things develop. The main concern that I have with what you are thinking of doing, is, that the solution will evaporate in the saucer before the orchid really has had any benefit. That you may also have white rings developing in the saucers where the water evaporates and leaves salts behind. So, depending on how high your humidity is, how much airflow your orchids are getting and how the temperatures are in your space, you may be able to get away with it. Only testing it out will give you the answer. IF you would like to do the following, just a suggestion, what if you were to fertilize your orchids by pouring the nutrient solution through the pot, the roots will take up what they can immediately, and then, after you have done that with all the orchids you wanted to fertilize, flush them through straight away. Once velamen is saturated, the roots can be flushed pretty much immediately without taking any nutrients away from your orchid. So, fertilize and flush all on the same day? Is that something that would work for you IF the saucer option proves to show salt accumulation? Let me know 🫶🏼 either way... 🫶🏼 thank you for watching, Pat! I wish you a wonderful Sunday ❤️🌸

😍 Hi! 💐 wow! I am so envious 🫠 I saw them in Kenya and they are amazing even when not in bloom, but, when in bloom... insane!! 🙆🏼‍♀️ 😍 congratulations! 🥳 they are not orchids, instead they belong to the yam family! If you ever have any high blood pressure, gastric ulcers, burns and other ailments, the rhizome and leader roots have medicinal extracts that are also used for pharmaceuticals ... I do not have the recipe so, take this as a fun fact and not to be considered any medical advice. Please consult your local herbalist in case you have any questions 😬😂 wishing you happy happy growing and of course, all the luck to enjoy this amazing plant for many many years 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching this video! I hope that your day is otherwise, going beautifully for you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

It is such a beautiful country! I was blessed and I am biased... *cough ... seeing as I was born and raised there... homesickness is a thing many many times. Especially throughout the months of November through March. It is summer there during those months, and I really miss being in a hot and humid climate, especially when the N'ern hemisphere is in the grips of winter. Although, I should not complain because I am lucky to be able to live in Spain, which is not as harsh as elsewhere during the winter, but still.. I am a pansy when it comes to cold temperatures 😬 oh, I love shirataki noodles. Yum!! 😋

Great tips. Would you mind linking the video ( pretty sure you have one on it) of how and when to decide to change from one media to another. I have an Onc. Twinkle in s/h that visibly has done nothing for 3 months. Thinking about changing to lava. My other twinkle from same seller is growing like a weed. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge 😍

HI Debbie 😍💐 I have a video that talks about when not to repot, unless certain parameters are met. So, maybe that will help in your moving the Twinkle to lava rock? Even though I feature a phalaenopsis in this video, simply because it was matching all the points I wanted to cover, it applies across the board for repotting any orchid, incl. switching up media. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6ScycSLpM_Vk8Y.html I had no luck at all with my Twinkles in leca. I lost 2. However, even Twinkles are different, as you can see with your's. One does great, the other... meh! I hope that the video helps out and if you have any questions that did not answer the question properly, please let me know 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching this video and your kind feedback! I hope that your Sunday is going beautifully for you ❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids aha!!!! Always go with the gut feeling. Thx for links you offered, definitely solidified my feeling. Several small root tips were present and nothing else that jumped out. Old roots were still firm and no odor present. A little clean up and back to s/h only with about inch of top layer being lava rubble. I hope you realize how much your videos help. In so many ways and also the camaraderie that you share ( show, express?! You know what I mean 😊) As always, love and blooms to you!!!!

Hi Gary 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and a big thank you for being here, for watching and your comment.... giving me the opportunity to thank you for all of these things 🥰😃 the one you refer to is a Maxillaria tenuifolia but this one is the compact variety. It grows a little slower than the standard larger size one, but the bloom size is just as big and just as fragrant. Thankfully, even though it is the compacter variety, none of the stunning coconut fragrance, bloom color size etc gets lost. The one you see has been in my collection since 2018. It took 3 years to really show any signs of getting it's grow on, but now... we have reached weed status 😅 I hope you are having a great day already, Gary and once again, thank you for watching and welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Thanks for your interesting videos. Could you explain why you are removing the leca from the orchid?

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

Hi Sylvia 😍💐 It is good to see you! I hope you are doing well 🫶🏼 I remove the leca so that I can create more air within the pot, space for new roots to grow in and reestablish a healthy climate for gas exchange within the root system. For many orchids this is important. Sometimes we can up pot, but it is not a good idea to do it all the time for the health and well being of the new roots. Considering that we do not want to repot our orchids for as long as possible, we need to make sure that the space in the pot is sufficient for the health and well being of the still existing root system as well as the new root system that will grow in the years to come. I hope that this is helpful? If you have any questions or thoughts you would like to run by me, please let me know. Many times people think that growing in leca is 'just fill in the gaps with media because it is inorganic but won't break down'. However, long term, that is not going to benefit the orchid at all. Different scenario for terrestrial, semi terrestrial orchids though. They are more robust when it comes to the needs of their root system and often embrace being pot bound. Thank you so much for your feedback on the content of my videos, I appreciate your kind words. Thank you, also, for watching! Hope you are already having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

PS, I have a cattleya that is kind of a teenager age. The rhizome where the new growths are coming in is lifting above the media so much that I can get two fingers beneath it. I noticed the roots where this is happening don't look so hot. I decided to put sphagnum moss beneath the gap. But I think I recall you saying that was a reason to repot. I did that at the end of last summer though. Do you think I should use this bandaid for another two years or is it more serious. Otherwise the Cattleya looks to be in excellent health. And thank you in advance

  • @NinjaOrchids

Sounds like you have a climber ... and your second is gut feeling is the way to go 👍🏼 use a light layer of moss to fill in the gap and get the roots into the media. Keep the moss just lightly damp to encourage the roots to start taking up water. I am not sure how the roots are behaving already, how long they are, but try to focus on damp moss as opposed to watering the new roots. Some orchids will not appreciate water on new roots directly. Unless they are already greening up. I am glad that the cattleya is otherwise in excellent health because then there is hakuna matata. Let me know how things progress. Oh, and please do not use any fertilized water to keep the moss damp. As she has roots in the pot, they will take up those nutrients. Keeping the moss pure and free from salts is safer to avoid any roots burning which could also stop them from growing 🫶🏼

HI 😍💐 it is so good to see you! I hope that you are doing well and having a great weekend already 🫶🏼 you absolutely do not need to cut off the spikes, no. If the blooms are spent, then just cut down to the first viable looking node and see what happens in the future. Maybe you will get some branching 😊 if, after repotting, the spikes die back, then it does not mean you did anything wrong. It is just the way orchids can respond to having been repotted. 👍🏼 I bet they look really pretty in those glass pots 😍 hope you have yourself a wonderful repot session and thank you so much for watching, lovely lady 🫶🏼❤️🌸
