Pre-Charge Circuits for Lithium-Ion Battery Packs

Ғылым және технология

Pre-charge circuits are an important safety and functional feature for high voltage battery packs. Why is this, and how do these circuits work? In this video, Erik Stafl, President of Stafl Systems, describes the use of pre-charge circuits in high-voltage battery system design.
Pre-charge circuits are used because the power source connected to the battery has a high capacitance. If we did not have a pre-charge circuit, there would be a very large inrush current - upwards of thousands of amps - that can weld contactors shut. We want to avoid this inrush current.
If you are new to battery pack architecture and design, we encourage you to view our previous videos prior to watching this video. Some background in electrical engineering may be helpful for most audiences.

Is there a reason that the main contact switch can't be a power FET with slow initial turn-on time and diode for discharge (powering load)? While then when wanting to charge battery pack another power FET in opposite drain-source direction with another diode (opposite direction) so that both charge/discharge states can be enabled/disabled by BMS?

Your videos are superb and very helpful. Could you explain about the importance in compression of LiFePO4 cells during battery pack manufacturing. I keep finding several literature regarding the benefits of cell compression. However, the battery cell manufacturers provide us with a cell guard for each cell when manufacturing battery packs. When these cell guards are added, the compression of cells cannot be done. Should I add these cell guards, and not compress the cells? or should I not use these cell guards and compress my cells properly?

It doesn't do it for long. You just have to figure it out and spec it to withstand the power, currents, lifetime, etc. It's like a starter in an ICE car: usually it runs once then gets hours to cool off. But you can burn it up if you keep doing it over and over, so you have to detect that and prevent it. If your main contactor doesn't work, your precharge could still be connected and your main load starts, and that's when your precharge can burn up. Happened to me in a radar transmitter.

Hello everyone, first of all, thank you for the explanation. I have a question, is the precharge circuit in the battery pack or included in the converter (inverter) or is it a separate system?

It is supposed to be in the battery.industry standard is to have precharge upstream from the inverter.never expect the inverter to have precharge for inrush protection
