Battery Management System Safety and Fault Management for Lithium Ion Batteries

Ғылым және технология

Have you ever wanted to know how your Battery Management System (BMS) helps keep you safe and manages faults? In this video, Erik Stafl, President of Stafl Systems discusses BMS safety and fault management. This technology is used for many lithium ion battery systems, including those in drones and electric vehicles.
Topics Covered:
BMS safety
Safe Operating Area
Over Voltage Fault (OV Fault)
Over Temperature Fault (OT Fault)
Under Voltage (UV Fault)
Under Temperature (UT Fault)
Dendritic Growth
Thermal Runaway
Fault Reporting
BMS Disconnect
We look at the conditions the BMS monitors, using a system diagram to understand cell voltage reporting. Using a chart with voltage and temperature, Erik explains the safe operating area for the battery pack cells. The BMS monitors the minimum safe temperature, maximum safe operating temperature, minimum safe voltage and maximum safe voltage, depending on chemistry. The BMS will work to keep battery cells within the safe operating area and report any faults that threaten overtemperature or overcharge, which can lead to thermal runaway. The BMS will also prevent overdischarge or under temperature that can also threatened the battery cell.
The BMS manages the cell performance and communicates this information to the external application. The BMS can also disconnect the from the external application to protect the battery pack to prevent unsafe operation, triggering a fault.

He created these videos to market his BMS system instead got a bunch of nerds learning at 3am. Big win for Stafle. More content like this, please!!

I have a question: 4:45 - 5:30 = How can dendritic growth occur during over discharge in full cell? This is the process of Li+ going into cathode/oxide and LiC6 converting to carbon. Where is the dendrite growth going to occur? negative or positive electrode? If yes how is it going to occur? Please feel free to contact me.

Yeah I would also question the explanation in the video on this point. From what I know Overdischarge would be more likely to cause decomposition of the cathode and, in severe overdischarge cases, even the anodes copper conductor as well. Both scenarios are irreversible, like metal plating, but different never the less.
