0:15 me being from Sweden where “the right” is Liberal and “the left” is Socialist - I was always so confused why Liberals were on “the left” in American politics

  • @gattawesome

The word liberalism has lazily been borrowed by various political factions in an effort to be seen as a link to what is now called Classical Liberalism. The original Liberals were opposed to monarchism and in favor of a capitalist system. In this sense, both modern liberals and conservatives are Classical Liberals since neither say they are in favor of the monarchy. To identify left vs right wing, it became easy to say that the left was liberal (meaning progressive) and the right was conservative (meaning status quo). In realistic play, most American politicians are what’s called neoliberals and republicans invented the term neoconservative so that they could avoid associating with the term “liberal” since it became associated with left wing politics. Liberals are left wing in comparison to conservatives, but that does not mean that they are Leftist. While liberals and leftists agree on a great deal of things, liberals are uneasy about upsetting the status quo and can now generally be seen as “socially liberal fiscal conservatives” otherwise known as the Third Way. I could go on and on about how political views are far more complicated than Left vs Right and how in many countries “Liberal” is just a name, but you’d be better served looking up the various spectrums of political ideology, what values they have, and why oftentimes political parties’ names are just names that have nothing to do with their actual political views.

True left wing (aka socialist) thought has been so removed from US politics for so long that literally the entire US spectrum is pretty much viewed from the center to the right. Lol. It's like the left side doesn't exist. So what's center right in most of the world is considered far left in the US.

10:48 Useless film student here, 1930s-1950s Hollywood cinema was defined by the importation of European directors fleeing WW2. Douglas Sirk, Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, Edgar G. Ulmer, Fred Zinnemann. Before that the likes of Otto Preminger, Josef von Sternberg and Charlie Chaplin fled in part due to WW1. All of whom brought about a darker and more dour outlook deliberately meant to subvert American standards of normalcy to highlight the dark state of war times, this is why we got Film noir. Prager's analysis of cinema during the 1930s-1950s is literally the opposite of true.

I know this is an old video but the only reason films were "patriotic" in the 30s was because of the film Production Code; a form of self-regulation in Hollywood to make sure that all films would pass censors and be able to screen in all 50 states. Some states would censor or outright ban films that disparaged America and that's why all films up until the late 60s (when the PCA was abolished and replaced with the MPAA rating system) were pro-America. It wasn't that all the people who made movies back then were gushing with patriotism, though certainly more of them were then than they are now. They just weren't allowed to make unpatriotic films since cinema wasn't a respected art form yet and they feared government intervention.

4:00 I don't agree with having separate graduations for poc , or separate housing. These two things violate the civil rights laws. If someone wants that stuff, they can go to an HBCU or start their own private college. Social Clubs for poc are different.

The trouble with protecting hate speech is that hate speech does not exist in terms of just ideas and just debates, it exists when people call to kill minorities and those minorities are scared for their safety. Hate speech is not a victimless crime and should not be protected, and the debate of “if it’s so bad, you can argue against it” does not stop the harm being done to minorities simply by the hate speech existing.

This must be where Dave Rubin gets his "the left left me" bullshit. I have this "condition" (for lack of a better word) called, "misophonia", which is basically a massive sensitivity to sound. Especially bodily related sounds...basically it means that certain sounds fill me with uncontrollable rage. Like slurping drinks or soup or lip smacking noises when someone eats....or chews gum. It was really bad when I was a teen. It got to the point where I couldn't sit down to dinner with my family or be around by sweet little doggo when she drank. Its gotten better as I've gotten older, bit its still an issue. I say all that to say this: I have had a mega crush on Hasan for a while. But its so difficult to watch some of his videos brcause of his gum chewing. Luckily he's intelligent, interesting, funny and hotter than hell so I stay committed to watching his vids. But sometimes I get a month behind because sometimes I just can't tolerate it! Haha. XD

I recall Dave Rubin saying a while ago (don't remember where) that PragerU came up with that title, and when he saw the finished YT video he was at first dismayed that they decided to call it "Why I left the Left". Eventually he embraced the title PragerU made, but it was interesting getting insight on how PragerU works.
