---------
That proposition was the subject of a November 5, 2019, debate hosted by the Soho Forum, a monthly debate series sponsored by Reason. Arguing in favor of the resolution was Richard D. Wolff, an economist at the University of Massachusetts and the author, most recently, of Understanding Marxism. Taking the other side was former Barron's economics editor Gene Epstein, who is also the Soho Forum's co-founder and director. Reason's Nick Gillespie served as moderator.
It was an Oxford-style debate, in which the audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event; the side that gains the most ground is victorious. It was a packed house, with about 450 people in attendance. The pre-debate vote found that 25 percent of the audience agreed that socialism was preferable to capitalism, 49.5 percent picked capitalism as the better system, and 25.5 percent were undecided. Despite a technical problem at the event itself, the Soho Forum was able to recover the final vote totals, which saw support for socialism drop by half a percentage point and support for capitalism increase to 71 percent.

The thing that struck me the most throughout the debate, is how two people with vehemently opposing views, respected each other, actively listened and could engage in heated conversation, without resorting to petty insults and underhandedness. They both remained lazer focused throughout and even managed to find some common ground. In parts of the debate they stood up and protected the others right to speak and be heard, when heckled by audience members. A lack of civility and the inability to respect a political opponent in this way, is perhaps the greatest threat to modern democracy, politics and freedom of expression we currently face. This is what serious people sound like. Very different from our world leaders isnt it?

Gene Epstein begins with an apology to Richard Wolff for an earlier outburst, he subsequently transitions into a critique that personalizes the concept of socialism to Wolff’s interpretations, rather than addressing the ideology in a broader sense. This strategy subtly shifts the debate from a general discussion to a more personal critique, which could be perceived as a nuanced form of personalization that edges towards underhanded critique, albeit within the bounds of formal respect. EDIT: Yeah... Gene is literally attacking Richard's character and whenever he touches on the primary subject he just gives examples of all the current problems we are living with...

Spongebob and squidward need to seize the Krusty Krab. While Spongebob provides the labor for creating the burgers and squidward runs the front end of the business taking orders from the customers, the capitalist (pig) crab pockets the profit while giving the two workers a pittance. Nobody earns the value of their labor. Obviously this is why spongebob and squidward live in squalor and discomfort next to Patrick, who literally lives under a rock, while the bourgeoise live elsewhere. Krabs justifies his profit because he procured the capital to create the restaurant and owns the formula, while actively doing nothing of value for his workers or his society. Plankton, meanwhile, is a reflection of the class struggle as he is ruthlessly outmatched at every turn due to the inherent inequality in the system. Neither worker can “choose” to get another job because the reality of Bikini Bottom is that there aren’t any other reasonable options. Squidward obviously does not voluntarily wish to be there. There is a guise of individualism and self determination thrown over a flawed system. Unfortunately, as long as they can feel superior to Patrick, who is lower in society, they too believe they can one day be like Mr. Krabs.

I need to be more educated in order to know where I stand in this conversation. But, coming from an ex-communist country, it seems to me that innovation is not something produced by capitalism itself. Innovation happens everywhere, but in communist countries ( because of dictatorship and not because of the system), innovation was inhibited (intellectuals killed). Therefore, the fact that we associate innovation with capitalism, seems to me to be erroneous. I don't believe competition creates innovation. I believe innovation is not created by the business mind inside of us but by the visionary, creative spirit. We innovate because we have scientists, engineers, artists, etc. not because we have businessmen. Afterward, businessmen often use those innovations to their advantage. And if you are a creator and a business person, at the same time, like Steve Jobs, that's ideal. But the reality is, not everyone is. It is pretty rare. Because business and creativity are each one in itself an expertise. So, I think competition creates anxiety, and anxiety is not a favorable ground for creativity. I believe we create because we are human beings, it's in our nature to create. Not because capitalism would allow it. And I believe that communist countries had creators and innovators too, but they just had dictators in power. Which stopped creativity. And capitalism too, has a different kind of dictatorship, but it's more masked. It's not obvious, that's why it's hard to be seen. In capitalism, the dictators are the multinationals that monopolize the market, making it almost impossible for local businesses to survive. Ultimately, I believe both of the ideologies have important values and we should be smart and pick from each one what it's truly nourishing for the fulfillment of humanity.

  • @willnitschke

    1. You observed correctly that Communism/Socialism prevents innovation but then reached the bizarre conclusion that it can happen anywhere. 2. You went onto make some stupid assertions based on what you "believe" rather than arguments. 3. Competition is necessary otherwise everything turns to shit very rapidly. Life creates anxiety. You can't wish it away by voting yourself a political ideology. Your result will be the opposite of intent. 4. Businesses can exploit or suppress technological innovation, depending on the circumstances. But unless there is commercialization, there is no possibility of innovation either.

These are the big ideas that will shape our future for better or worse and as a society we should be breaking them down, scrutinizing and re-scrutinizing them constantly from all sides n angles.

@@buckyflex1 Intellectualism is about sonder interest in the truth, not profession. I wouldn't make the assumption that a truck driver is incapable of being an intellectual. Frankly, discussion of important economic ideas *must* include the working class. That is the driving force behind Marxist ideology, whether you think economic systems should be capitalist or not. Frankly, I would prefer a capitalist system where some board chairs are just employee representatives, almost like a company parliament. The thing is, this might actually be less efficient than just having the government impose a required board structure. Conversation as to what the best form of the system would be is up for debate, but all stakeholders, including employees, should be considered.

1:27:12 Portuguese here. It is in fact true, we had this coalition for quite a very long time. So long that people are tired of it. People are tired of being poor and having bad work conditions. We have ‘free’ healthcare, we earn 14 salaries a year (1 extra salary every 6 months), we have work groups that fight for worker rights, and still working and living in Portugal is just getting worse and worse. Young people and talent is running away from this country cause although we have all of these ‘rights’, non of them actually work. Because public companies don’t go out of business when they do a bad job - which they do a terrible one - and people are literally paying at least 40% of what could be their income to support those same companies and can’t afford private services, we just find ourself hopeless. I could go on and on on how and why it leads to this situation, but there’s no point in doing it here now. Portugal has a very aged population also and most of the older population has still in mind that communists saved our country from the dictatorship that ended in 1974. Because of that, they trust that communism and it’s other fields is what brings equality. And in a way, they’re right: we’re all equally poorer by the year. But because young people need to live by the democratic decisions of the elder, we can’t get anywhere else. I believe this country will keep going down until it reaches the point where you can’t tell it apart from 3rd world countries and only then we’ll have a revolution that will bring free markets and prosperity. Because of that, I think I will always believe that states are corrupt and should be kept as minimum as possible

Not to mention that almost all of his 'points' about capitalism can be refuted by just silently pointing at Scandinavia...

  • @jd-yo2is

Eros well Wolff’s whole argument is based on the whole Marxist idea that workers are exploited by wage labor. But we can look at Scandinavia and see some of the most most egalitarian and successful advanced economies of all time. Some of the highest GINIs, best economic mobility. All the social programs you could imagine... These are mixed ‘capitalist’ economies.. Free markets, large private, for profit sectors. This private sector and the growth it brings can be taxed to support social programs. Wolff’s whole argument that ‘capitalism’ is inherently exploitive doesn’t really stand up to common sense economics. At least domestically. Internationally is another long discussion to have.

Socialism speech was pretty emotional. But it didn't really deal with reality. We know centrally managed economy is inefficient and doesn't work very well, and so is democratic one. Democracy is not very flexible and fast, and that side effect of most of us gladly choose with government since government is ultimate authority of the land we live in. Not to mention just problem of entrusting too much power to the state. And it doesn't even foster equality any more than capitalism. On other hand, under capitalism economy we get proven results, and we can deal with side effects by regulation, taxes(redistribution) and other things we do. And what we would need even with socialism anyways. And under capitalism you can have unions, you can have worker co-ops, you can have company run as you want. I'm from filthy socialist Nordic country and I'm pretty happy how things are run, and I'm hardcore capitalist. As in, I think capitalism is currently best base economic model to run our economy on. I don't think everything should be private, since we should use type of organization that's best for the task. Only thing capitalism does is that's incredibly good at distributing resources, labor etc. where's it's needed very efficiently, and it fosters environment where people have incentive to do stuff. And that's what we need from economic system. Then, we need to limit and deal with harmful effects this has, like we do with everything and push this force of capitalism in direction we want via regulation, taxes etc.

🏠 Stupid people System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities..... 1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can. 2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later. 3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most. 4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice. 5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life. 6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it. 7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success. 8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments. 9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences. 10, Always try to give more than you take. Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you. 🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix) 😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. Sincerely, The Real Peacemaker against religious oppression. kzread.info/dash/bejne/epaqpdqGlsaxppc.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/on1-qqyzdLTJgrA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/f62sxMamcdGvk6w.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYCux8Oke6aclqg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmyqqsNxqqedmrw.html

Addressing the deep-rooted and complex disagreements between the left and right political ideologies is a challenging task, and it's essential to recognize that any reform proposal will require thoughtful consideration and cooperation from both sides. While it's unlikely that any single reform can completely resolve all differences, here's an original proposal that aims to bridge the gap and promote understanding: Title: The Comprehensive Social Progress Initiative (CSPI) Step 1: Establish a Non-Partisan Committee Create a non-partisan committee comprising experts, academics, and representatives from both left-leaning and right-leaning ideologies. The committee's objective will be to draft a Comprehensive Social Progress Initiative (CSPI) that encompasses the concerns and values of both sides. Step 2: Identify Common Goals The committee will conduct thorough research to identify common goals shared by both left and right ideologies. Examples could include economic prosperity, individual freedoms, social justice, environmental sustainability, and national security. Step 3: Define Core Principles Based on the common goals identified, the committee will establish a set of core principles that will guide the reform. These principles should reflect the values and aspirations of both left and right while emphasizing cooperation and compromise. Step 4: Rethink Economic Systems One major point of contention is the role of the government in the economy. Instead of arguing for a purely capitalist or socialist approach, the CSPI will propose a mixed economic system that promotes free-market competition while ensuring a strong social safety net. This system should support economic growth while providing adequate support to those in need. Step 5: Invest in Education and Reconciliation Education plays a crucial role in fostering understanding and empathy between conflicting ideologies. The CSPI will advocate for comprehensive educational reforms that teach critical thinking, media literacy, and the value of diverse perspectives. Additionally, initiatives promoting dialogue and reconciliation between different groups should be implemented to heal societal divides. Step 6: Encourage Local Initiatives Recognize that different communities have unique needs and preferences. Devolve some decision-making power to local governments, allowing them to implement policies tailored to their specific circumstances while still adhering to the CSPI's core principles. Step 7: Promote Evidence-Based Policies Both left and right can agree on the importance of evidence-based policies. The CSPI will advocate for rigorous research and evaluation of proposed reforms to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency. Step 8: Political Campaign Finance Reform To reduce the influence of money in politics, implement comprehensive campaign finance reform that promotes transparency, limits corporate donations, and encourages grassroots fundraising. Step 9: Foster Civic Engagement Promote civic engagement and participation in the political process by creating accessible platforms for public input and involvement. Encourage citizens to contribute to policy-making through town halls, citizen assemblies, and participatory budgeting. Step 10: Emphasize Long-Term Thinking Encourage long-term thinking in policymaking to address issues beyond electoral cycles. Establish a non-partisan body responsible for assessing long-term challenges, such as climate change and automation, and proposing strategies for addressing them. It's crucial to remember that no reform can completely eliminate all disagreements, but the CSPI aims to create a framework that respects the diversity of perspectives while seeking common ground for the betterment of society as a whole. The success of such an initiative would depend on open-mindedness, compromise, and a commitment to working together for the greater good. -GPT 4

It was good, and the Capitalism’s argument was full of strawmaning. For example, the hypothetical about a socialist party winning the majority of votes of the ballot box, then introducing full blown socialism overnight. However, Socialism’s argument included the history of the process of Capitalism, it was not an overnight change from Faudism but a centuries long process. Just logically, that’s exactly how most ideas come to fruition. So it’s a bit of a strawman argument from Capitalism, which raises questions about integrity and trustworthiness.

Their relationship to economic production is enforcement of the laws instituted by the ruling class (private capital). Unions are beneficial for the working class to collectively bargain, aka to have any chance at bargaining at all instead of simply being fired for asking for more equality. The purpose of the police union is to shield cops from the consequences of their unlawful behavior, which is disproportionately used to afflict the working class

This debate goes up with some of the greatest of all time, like the Lincoln-Douglas debates which preceded the American civil war. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were very close friends despite having opposite ideologies surrounding slavery, and were respectful of one another even while debating. Incredibly, though he would die only two months later, Douglas would switch his affiliations in favor of the Union as a result of the United States Army surrender at Fort Sumter. Now allies with his former opponent, Douglas even suggested privately to Lincoln that instead of sending 75,000 Union troops to suppress the Confederate Army, he send 200,000, saying "You do not know the dishonest purposes of these men as I do." Douglas would spend the short remainder of his life rallying support for his former opponent.

The main problem that I had with the socialism professor is that the debate thesis was that "socialism is preferable to capitalism". If you are defending this point, you can't go on to argue that Socialism is a nebulous, undefined, ongoing criticism of capitalism necessitated by capitalism itself. You have to define what socialism is and then argue for it. Otherwise, as the capitalist side rightly argued, all we have from Socialism is a bunch of failed experiments and people unwilling to define it in real terms. At least with capitalism we see good results across the board. Could they be better? Sure. But i'm not willing to risk starving to death or getting murdered by our very own thought police to find out whether it can be better through socialism or not.

The issue you are running up against is that Marx was never proscriptive, he was descriptive in that he was describing the problem of Capitalism as it exists as an unstable unsustainable system. That it was a source of human suffering and unforced errors, and that we can do better and should expect better for our lives. He described the traits of the Communist society, moneylessness, classlessness, etc. But he did not know how specifically we were going to get there nor what it would look like beyond those two things. He said this because what the Communist society would look like would be dependent on the needs of the people who build it, who *wouldnt* be him. Communism will meet the needs of the people who build it and the people who build it are the people who will revolt against the excesses of Capitalism. IE: Not Karl Marx. He can only describe what the end result cannot have in order to meet the basic criteria of what is Communism vs what is not Communism.

@@JimLockett Turd eater. Shove communism up your sorry arse. Communism is not just a false and evil ideology, but goes well beyond any dystopian worldview. It has faled miseraly every time it was tried out, in all parts of the world. karl Marx was an ignorant fool, an imbecile a, a fraud and a liar, like all communists that follow his limping steps. Communism is immoral, anti-human, dishonest, intolerant and the supreme manifestation of ignorance and stupidity, Only retards, liars, douchebags and criminals endorse communism.
