Another trick that works for me, if you're alone in a private space, audibly read the words on the page like you're readin it out to someone else.

Lol, yes, that's what I do. Also, ask yourself (out loud ), “what is this that I'm about to learn?” and “why do I want or need to learn this?” It's essential to understand your intention and align them with your goal entirely. Say your goal out loud before you start to read, and when you get distracted, say it out loud again to re-align yourself with your plan.

I think the ruler trick works too because you're introducing a physical interaction to the reading. By having to physically move the ruler down every single line (every few seconds), you're mind is staying on the task rather than slipping into auto-pilot mode and not absorbing the words.

That makes sense. I can never sit down and read physical books efficiently, but I can read proficiently using a digital device scrolling through a feed or playing a game. It's interesting that making reading more interactive makes it more effective. The ruler thing is such a great idea.

I wonder always what it’s like for the average human (one without ADHD) to read a book. I always use my finger to stay on the line, I’ll try the ruler one now. But the average being, are they actually able to read a page without several interruptions and be able to take in the information without stress? Is that actually how it works? To me that just seems incredible

Oh yeah! I've have been so jealous in the past of those who can read normally. All my kids bar one are able to read well and I'm so thankful for that. (I keep the other under my wing - he's only 26!!) Without doubt my dyslexia has been the most debilitating aspect of my ADHD. That and my quick temper resulting from being constantly frustrated!!!!

no. most people especially these days have extreme difficulty concentrating on reading a book. phones in general and social media in particular is shortening our attention spans. when I was a teenager I could read a whole book in a day. just hyper focused on reading, even when I was eating or drinking or walking or whatever. as an adult I find that I really have to get into the flow of things. so if it’s a book I really like then i’ll have to really really really try hard to focus for the first couple pages, but once I get back into the story, or the rhythm of reading then i’m completely engaged. i’m only here to help my wife with her adhd. I don’t have it. I do have autism tho, so i’m not sure if that affects my reading ability or not. TLDR: i would consider myself a fairly advanced reader with no ADHD and I don’t just immediately start reading smoothly. I have to really focus hard for a few mins before I get into a reading rhythm.

that ruler advice is exellent!! also if it's nontransparent it's even better and turn the back side where aren't measurments marked. i also was thinking maybe build device that has upper and lower writing lines blocked. the seeable line is only in middle. right now the ruler blocks the upcoming content but not what has been already read. Basically a helping tool that has lenght of most book pages and blocks upper and down side - in the middle is the unblocked area.

Something interesting I have found is that as a child I could zoom through books and remember the info on reading quizzes. I almost hyper focused on it and then zoomed through the quizzes but I found the older and more content I had to remember I couldn't concentrate on the material and lost interest in reading because of that! Is there any tips I can do as an adult to be able to enjoy and take in reading? I loved the video by the way but I'm looking for tips with actually being able to enjoy the content!

You need to understand the method the book are made for each individual's like as for kids books are made in form of more infographic way like they have lot of pictures and don't forget the size of it picture they are almost cover half of the page and sometimes printed as for whole page in background as (blur ).. and the texts are also writen in the same way I mean as in content they have pretty much low in QUANTITY as compared to any book that a university going students may encounter in a library full of paragraphs and the size of texts are way to thin as then compression for only to provide information that are relevant to the topic in every cost-effective way as possible cause they can't make pictures and infographic that much unless if we are talking about (encyclopedia )..

Watching this I so wished that I had an actual textbook. Everything in my business class has been moved online including the textbooks due to lockdown and better accesibility. I wouldn’t say that sitting 10-12 hours in front of a screen every day has made information and learning more “accessible” for my ADHD brain. Do you have any tips for studying online? If so I would love to hear them 🙏🏻

Treat the digital book like you would a physical book. Use digital highlighters on the text to colour code or put the ruler on the actual screen.

in high school, i was learning through tech. i had my own laptop and school was mainly online despite physically being at school (at least we were prepared for the pandemic aha), what helped me was using the mouse cursor to hover each word i was reading, psychologically it felt similar to reading each word in a physical book with your finger. (i graduated last year, so glad i’m done with HS)

Iv never read a book in my life. I could just never do it. Never thought it could be adhd. Going to try some earplugs and see if it helps. Iv had really bad tinnitus for a few years and everyone keeps telling me not to wear earplugs but I find it help as it blocks all the other noise out!

Thanks again for sharing. Was looking at videos about improving reading then though, why not search for something that pertains to me. I like to use a blank note card. I do highlight, but I can get carried away with it. I wite on the sides anything that I might need to take away. I find that I start over thinking about the book. How does this apply to me, how could I use it, or this is stupid, why do I have to read this. I need to work on reading this coming summer before I go back to school in the Fall. Get some practice and endurance in.

Thank you for the video. I was wondering if you or anyone else had tips on how to not over do research? I tend to have way too many tabs open when writing a essay and often get over whelmed by all the research papers and topics I want to read about. And constantly struggle with reading a paper and mid paper I want to look for more research papers on different areas of research. So I end up spending more time researching as opposed to writing a essay. I’m not sure if that made sense. But any tips would be great!

The ruler tip is exactly why I have an oldschool kindle without a touchscreen - I use my thumb on the page itself to hold my place. Can't stand kindles that I can't touch without turning the page. On a computer I'll scroll the line I'm reading to the top of the page, too. Works great, but makes those expandy-hidy top bars super annoying.
