The bank's intercooler tubes have these indentations, if you have a boot blow off on the side of the road, clean the intercooler Boot and the tube with brake cleaner, this will get you to your next stop so you can buy a new boot. Also when are we installing a new boot after cleaning each side, spray cheap Hairspray, not fancy stuff like Aquanet cheap, this allows you to slide it on easily, when it dries it will be sticky.

excellent description and function about the charge air cooler. Bill, remember when you told me about my plastic charge pipe was cracked, but I never noticed a difference in performance. well, the SCT fitting snapped off and left me at a dead stop outside Columbia SC at 2am. March of 2017, I brought my truck in for a full dealer proof. The Truck is still running strong

I love it when a master mechanic is passionate about his opinion. This is the 2nd or 3rd video that I've seen where Mike is trying to stress the point that the OEM air cleaner is the right choice. Message received. I've actually had the experience of having the turbo boot pop off and it's exactly like Bill described, and of course we were a long ways from home. I didn't know what to make of it initially and definitely had the "oh shit" moment, but I was relieved to find that after reinstalling the boot and tightening the clamp it stayed on for the rest of the trip. My mechanic had been in there working on the engine and apparently didn't snug it down or maybe they didn't have that rib aligned correctly. Either way when I brought it to their attention they disassembled and cleaned it and then used some of grandma's hair spray to give it a little extra grip. That was several years ago and it hasn't popped since.

Bill, great video. I just replaced my hot side lower cac boot (original) as I bought truck new! All others replaced some time ago. Went to Ford dealerr and $$$$, but did not trust aftermarket. As a note, I was experiencing turbo "bark" when I would accelerate and figured out it was soot/carbon build up as I am an "old guy" and apparently don't drive my 04 F-250 hard enough. I used, on your recomendation, a bottle of the Archoil 6500, and it cleaned my turbo up in a few hundred miles of hard driving, and runs great now.Thanx for your videos, PS, I have 256K on my 6.0. and still runs and tows my tt great, no bullet proof or tunes, stock except for larger exhaust from turbo back, love the sound.

I'm in CA and the folks that bulletproofed my '04 F250 (Left Cost Diesel) created a rigid clamp on the CAC tube, it has never blown off but I change the boots at scheduled intervals anyway, just like the coolant cap. Learned my lesson the hard way with my '03 Excursion, it blew off while towing towing the RV. Not a fun way to start a vacation, but we limped our way there trying not to build too much boost.

I had this problem with my boots sweating oil, I went to Ford to get the factory boots and was told it was a minimum 6-8 weeks on back order, so I bought the mishimoto ones since you were recommending their products at one time. They have the retaining ring on them just like the Ford ones, been on my truck for a year and so far no problems…. I hope they hold up for a few more.

When it comes to the intercooler boots .. I have spent the 500 + dollars on OEM boots, purchased cheap after market boots etc,.... but the BEST boots I have ever used, are the off road style. They are made of extremely tough neoprene, high temp, oil resistant, interwoven mesh rubber ... they are 1/4 inch thick, and can withstand being reinstalled over and over .... they DO NOT pop off if properly installed .... they MUST be cleaned with diesel, the diesel MUST be cleaned off with brake cleaner and the boot MUST be dry and oil free before being reinstalled... A Ford mechanic showed me a tip on the pipes and plenum and inter cooler connections ... clean with any cleaner, DRY THE PIPE CONNECTION with paper shop towel, HEAT the pipe end or pipe connection with a heat gun or torch, hot enough to burn the oil out of the pores of the magnesium... cool... install and torque properly... I JUST today, finished installing a new 7.3 factory rebuild engine in my 2000 F350. I used the boots on my old engine for the last 50k miles (of 333k total) ... I was surprised to find that I DO NOT need new boots by a long shot... I am SO HAPPY, that I found them .... I COULD have gotten another 333k out of my old engine, but because of the fakedemic and the fact that Americans are at war with the leftist bastards amongst us, I could only get Delom15/40 instead of Rotella, to change my oil last fall 2021 ... it found EVERY possible place to start leaking and created a nightmare for me to fix... I had another engine sitting and waiting to go in, for the last 2 years, but couldn't wear out my 7.3 .. it never even burned an ounce of oil until I used the Delo .... Anyway, it's in, and runs like brand new truck.... I well never sell my 2000 F350 ... I lucked out when I bought that truck brand new.

I’ve had the hot side boot come off of the turbo on a customers 6.0 dump bed truck. It dented the hood outwards. I learned the hard way that you generally have to replace the boots once they come off because they will do it over and over again.

I plan on buying one soon and I'm leaning towards 7.3 or 6.0... heck our older school buses have the 444 "7.3" and the engines are all still going crazy good at 25 yeas of age and still on routes with 350,000+ miles... our bus barn has already junked most of the 2008, 09, 10, 11 school buses...

North bound on Raton Pass comes to mind for one blow off which resulted in 16k lb.'s, with the otherwise adequate stock 6.0 PSD, going into slow motion. The weeping oil is the biggest indicator of up coming failure, IMHO. 🌝

I got the "recall" (21E01) done on my 2016. I drove about 20 miles, towing my RV, and BOOOOM, that CAC blew off and the truck turned into a mega-slug. Ford service guy told me to get right back to the dealer. Turns out, my DPF was clogged beyond belief (according to Ford) and I needed a new one, along with three sensors downline. Good news? Ford would pay for it. Bad news? They didn't have the parts. Six and a half weeks later I got my truck back. Now it regens more than it EVER has. Diesel Particulate builds much faster than it used to. I have a Banks iDash hooked up and it measures all this stuff. However, my DEF level doesn't seem to be going down as fast as it used to. The truck ran fine before this "recall", and I now wish I'd never had the re-programming done. They don't do emissions where I live so that wouldn't have mattered. Grrrr. Every day I wish I'd not gotten rid of my 97 7.3!

I need your help with identifying a part. It’s the wiring harness that runs across the firewall alongside the cowl. It’s the harness that the clips break off. It’s the part that you use a bungee cord to hold up to get to the turbo. If you can give me the name and/or part number I would greatly appreciate it! Is this something I should buy from Ford or aftermarket? I have zip ties holding it up now but it’s driving me crazy, Lol! I bought my Archoil from them directly and upset on missing your promo. I’ve learned so much from your videos to maintaining my ‘05 F350 CC SRW and owe it to you! I love my truck and working on it! Thanks again for all you do making your videos and look forward to seeing your next video!

Thanks Bill and Mike for your time esplaining this. I have an '03 7.3 with 102k that I am finding has a few 'engineered mods' (i.e. hose clamp holding my CAC system to the turbo housing) and more that I am correcting this week. Thanks to your Archoil Sale last week, I bought enough to last me about 2 years as I figure there has never been anything ran through the fuel system. I bought new boots (and more) from RiffRaff for my maintenance/updating project for this week, I hope those are not on Mikey's DO NOT BUY LIST! (I will be checking for the ridge/lip inside when they come in). Thank you for your FREE videos! UPDATE: 2022_03_20 - I finished all of the upper mods (extensive I will say), including new RiffRaff CAC boots, and did a few test pulls, slowly working up to a few at 23 psi pulls up to 95 mph and no issues. I have just spent 4 hours pulling an RV. Running a Hydra on the 80 hp towing-shift setting, it was running an average of 8 to 10 psi boost at 70 mph on the interstate, and EGT's staying near 700F most of the trip. I was pleased and had no issues there either. I figure that any issues with the RiffRaff CAC boots would have shown up by now. For SOME parts, I buy Motorcraft, but for my CAC boots, and more, Clay at www.RiffRaffDiesel.com will have my business.

Riff Raff Diesel boots FTW! Plus, Bill touched on the CCV system, oil vapor gets sent back through the system, coating the inside of the boots breaking them down and blowing them off. I played the game with this exact issue on my 6.0. The fix... new boots of course, BUT also I started running my oil level in the center of the hashmarks on the dip stick, NOT all the way to the top. This was for two reasons... #1- this issue. Slightly less oil in the crank case seemed to yield less oil vapor in the CCV. #2- I would know if I had an injector leaking as the level would rise on the dip stick. Never had an issue since.

I put in the riffraff diesel 7.3l intercooler CAC boot kit. They definitely don’t have that little lip you pointed out on the oem boot. Maybe that’s why they keep blowing off at 40psi.

You are correct about The riffraff 7.3 Intercooler boot kit not having the little lip on it, Because the 6.0 boots have em, not the 7.3 boots. Lip and groove design was on 6.0 Engines, Not 7.3 Engines. My riffraff Intercooler boots got the Lip, cause there for a 6.0, notta 7.3.

Hot air only matters when you are not moving. I usually just mod the existing box. Most of the time they are super restrictive and you can feel noticeable difference. I take flow when driving into consideration when doing modding a box. I often make a diverter to guide the air towards the hole. It dont matter if its a truck or a little shit box. I always use the K$N filter and wash the oil off it. I know the oil grabs more dust, but its more restrictive than an oem like this. There are a few air boxes i have seen I would not mod because its already flowing the best it can.

So, I'm here because this just happened yesterday while pulling a trailer for the first time with my new(to me) truck. We replaced with an aftermarket part from NAPA and it promptly blew off. I'm just wondering, if there's a possibility that there is an issue with the intercooler that's causing a pressure overload. I intend on replacing all the boots with OEMs, but I wondering if there's a possibility of an issue with the intercooler that's causing a pressure overload?

Or do I have a IPR problem as well? Oil presures (HPOP and LOW) are good. Not smoking, fuel filers replaced within past 100 miles. I have entire intercooler kit on order, definitely a hole, and splattered oil because of this. Hoping this resolves P2290 in addition to, no power, oil splatters, as well you all were talking about.

It depends on how much load you have on the truck. If you running empty with no trailer the answer is yes you can limp the truck BUT if you loaded she ain't moving.

This happened to me last week pulling a trailer with a light load. EGTs immediately run very high. You can limp it along. Do not let the engine start to lug. Make the transmission shift to prevent lugging on a hill. You'll be slow, but you can usually make it to where you can get it fixed.

I did the CCV video and the internet armchair trolls lost their minds. called me all sorts of nasty names. The argument is ALL Diesel engines are supposed to vent to the atmosphere and not ingest oil from the inside of the engine AND that many older diesel engine designs vented to the atmosphere. This is true until the PowerStroke V8 diesel engines started turning up the RPM and shift points to 2500+. This changes the rules and causes an increase in crank case pressure that MUST be relieved by vacuum or the oil seals in the engine start tom fail. Crankcase scavenging using vacuum pumps etc has been in circle track racing for many decades, but these "experts" are unaware such things exist and argue from a point of ignorance.

@@powerstrokehelp thanks for the response. I was interested because I scolded my mechanic because in fortifying the engine he grinded off the bracket that mounts the intake tube to the ficm bracket and in turn caused the pcv valve to become unsupported so it leaks a very small amount. Looks like I need to rectify the bracket and put a new pcv assembly in.....

one thing i didn't hear you mention is, the damage caused by over tightening the clamps on the aluminum tubes, it can cause the ends to deform and become cone shaped and out of round! Beware when buying a truck from someone that goes out of their way to tell you how good everything is because they are a "MECHANIC" I bought a late 99 with a bad auto transmission from a "MECHANIC" he was also a "WELDER" the tubes were over tightened and totally distortrd the boots were so tight they looked a girls skirt where they came out of the clamp. This guy took the air heater coil out of the Y pipe and put in a conglomeration of 1/2" black steel pipe with with a "T" and tons of RTV this was his set-up for a boost gauge port! On the welding end this Dork took a 10" wide 1/2" steel plate and put it across the frame for a 5th wheel gooseneck hitch! Not a bad idea if bolted, but he weleded the damn thing directly to the frame! BAD IDEA! The welding was shitty and had stubbs of MIG wire poking out allover! Banks has good boots and tubes the tubes are stainless alloy . I have a OBS that I put a Banks intercooler in it is top quality for after market! Nothing Good comes from China!!!

There's nothing wrong with the Ford tubes until you start talking about the 6.7. My PLASTIC CAC to throttle body tube failed at 67K with no tuning. Imagine that happening in the mountains where there is no place to pull over and now no way to pull your load without melting the motor down because there is no boost .Is the Ford plastic tube the cam sensor of the 6.7? Carry a spare because Ford cant engineer the tube properly??

I put the AFE intercooler tubes on my 7.3 and it rocks. Better mpg's, better boost and better cooling! It did pop off once on the cold side once but it was a Ford clamp failure. AFE sent me high performance clamps and its been golden ever since. Most of the parts on the 6.0 are outstanding? Come on it's a 6.0. The whole engine was a POS that ruined Ford's diesel reputation! That's why you charge 10 grand to bullet proof that POS!

But, I do wish you would quit talking down to your audience. For example, you mock people who do the crankcase vent bypass, but the only explanation you give is that Ford wouldn't have done it that way unless it was right. But isn't your whole business built on the fact that Ford didn't get a lot of things right? Isn't that why you call it "dealerproofing"? Please, if you're going to tell us why some modification is wrong, explain why it is wrong, functionally. And some aftermarket parts are better. Mishimoto radiator, anyone? Respectfully...

Thank You for the respect. You need to watch my older video called the perfect storm. In a nutshell the early 02 built 6.0 engines were extremely flawed. The engine had 482 changes made to it during production and most all the issues were straightened out by late 04 build dates. IF Ford motor company had actually honored all the warranty claims on the 6.0L they would have gone bankrupt. It was that bad. In the end the 05-10 (E chassis vans ran 6.0L until 2010) was one of the most reliable engines ever produced so long as you didn't tune it. 05-07 Ford F250s and F350s had some of the highest customer satisfaction data of ANY vehicle ever built.
