I have religously changed the air filter at 12,000 miles and the oil at 5000. 2006 Durmax at 560K miles. Bone stock. No "performance" upgrades. Truck regularly tows 10K pounds. Original turbo, tansmission, water pump and oil pump.

Jiffy lube opened my air filter to check it. 5000 miles later I made the mistake of returning again. The technician came to say who ever installed your air filter installed it upside down. Don't use Jiffy lube if your vehicle means anything to you.

Ryans a great guy, and hes totally right. I gernaded a turbo, cause was a hole in my intercooler, a boost leak. He got me fixed up and sure enough i did a boost leak check and do anytime i pull a charge pipe. I made one with a pvc pipe end cap and air line fitting. Regulator in line with it. Cost me $5. Saved me thousands.

Last June (2021), I went to the Lower Keys from Northern Illinois pulling a 7,500 lb trailer full of construction tools. Just North of Cairo, Illinois, we lost an intercooler. Powerstoke specialist in the area said he "never saw that happen before". After replacing it (on a Sunday morning at 7 am), our diesel ran great and has several thousand miles since we returned in July.

Idling the engine before Shutting it off gives the turbo a chance to cool. Oil flow is what lubricants and dissipates heat in the turbo bearings. If you stop oil flow when it's to hot oil will burn and carbon up the bearings. My 07lbz takes about 90 seconds to cool down to 300 degrees. If your pulling a load and it would take a little longer. I have a an 01 cummins it takes about 45 seconds to reach 300 degrees. A gauge is your best friend then you know.

There are 2 basic causes of turbo failure are both lack of oil issues. Don't jump on it when you first fire it up, wait until you've got oil pressure established. Don't come nailing the throttle up to a stop and shut the engine off. If the engine is off then you have no oil to the turbo shaft bearing (bushing).

LLY and bulletproof, bought it 3 yrs old, 2nd owner has mods and tunes but basic stuff stuff replaced... you don't need all this and that for a street truck that tows and is ready for work on the daily

Ryan: Great Video! Lots of information. I don't own a Turbo'd vehicle currently, but I do want a Turbo-diesel vehicle on our next purchase. Two Questions: I've considered having a separate oiling system 4 the Turbo with 2 Frantz Oil systems---4 both engine oil & Turbo oil. Kits available 4 common diesels. They filter down to 2 microns, & it removes carbon from the oil (see Frantz's video on this). It's expensive---do U think it's worth it? What about a Vacuum Pump on venting the crankcase to remove the blowby that will occur?

Your turbo would have to glowing red to cause the engine oil to burn up. If your turbo is getting that hot that you need to cool it down then think about metal and how is expands and contracts when it cools and remember you manifold will probably crack and leak first.

I like to drive easy the last few miles before I get to where I'm going to let it cool down. Usually let it idle for ~30 seconds before I shut it down as I'm getting stuff ready before I get out of the truck. This has worked well for every turbo vehicle I've had.

  • @ToadHoleOntario

    @ToadHoleOntario

    2 жыл бұрын

@@GrandPrix46 if you bastardized your truck and need to watch the turbo temps just remember real Diesel engines have cylinder liners not parent bores. If your turbo is hot then your piston is hot and polished the top cross hairs in the cylinder till she has a little to much blow by. Real working trucks have air brakes to stop bigger loads. Transport trucks use gear on gear transmissions and no chains in the 4x4( yes you can get a class 8 4x4 Western star truck) it’s just epic stupid truck guys. If you put a turbo on that Godzilla Ford engine it would smoke all Diesel engine power trucks.

All it takes is the cylinder walls to loose the honing marks and now you have used up most of the engines “prime running conditions” build a turbo gasser and you’ll have some crazy obnoxious monster truck build that could possible lift the wheels off the ground

Me as a ex truck driver 🤣..I see this all the time..People come off the road and shut down their motors down..😢 This is the worst thing to do..Because. that turbo gets so hot and the oil hot too. When you go to park your truck always let it idle for a few minutes to cool off the turbo chargers😅😮

So is there a preoil procedure for stock or aftermarket 6.7 powerstroke turbos? I installed a larger one and had it lock up after the truck idled for 10 min before test drive... before 3rd gear the turbo had locked up, jist as boost was begining to build

Is there a simple way to power balance a 16 cummins? Or is there any other way to test injectors if I suspect one is not operating efficiently. I ask because it seems mine could be idling a bit smoother compared to others I've heard idling. Mine has 156 k and has no mods other than a new Genos actuator I replaced sometime ago.

How long should a turbo last? Mine works fine but I have 185,000 mi on the original turbo (2007 6.0 Powerstroke stock tune) I take long trips and don't want problems far from home. Is it time to install a new turbo as preventive maintenance?

I have an 07 classic LBZ and I have my two pcv ran to a t, and then the third leg ran into a little breather filter (stainless washable) because otherwise I get a lot of oily vapor blowing on top of the engine. It's this ok to do? Or do I need to do differently??

What did ryan say in the first segment after lifting off your foot of the throttle with that noise? Could someone explain please, I thought it was normal (Noise from the blow off valve) when you take your foot of the pedal and hear that noise....

@truckmaster I’m confused at 06:00 mark. I did a high flow but left factory turbo and did pcv reroute. Is it only supposed to be cut when installing an aftermarket turbo?

    # 5:04 AND when changing out a blown turbine, look for pieces of turbine all the way back to the air filter. Those pieces will blow the new one lickedy split.

Good information and good video but the only part I am a little about now is what if it was a manufacturer defect. It’s almost impossible to prove it by the way he is thinking. I have a cheetah for 180k now just looking to move up to a 66mm. Makes me hesitant but still very good video in the end.

Not to sure on that but usually when you buy a “NEW” performance unit it’s built using China parts. I personally think a reman is better in quality because it’s oem. That’s who I won’t go with any other turbo company then Ryan’s

The reality is a turbo defect on a manufacture is going to happen within the first few minutes of running or miles of driving, this goes for any and all manufactures not just us. Lets say a turbo comes back 10 months later with axial movement and a purple/blue thrust, hard to blame any builder on that.

Hey guys. I’ve got a Benz r320 with an om642 engine in. It’s consuming a lot of oil and I can’t figure out where it’s going. No leaks so it’s burning it somewhere. Any suggestions where or what to look for. Hoping it’s not valves or rings and something I can fix myself. Even if I need to replace turbo. Better than rebuilding the motor
