Powering up a High Pressure Sodium lamp - The wrong way (without an igniter)

Ғылым және технология

This evenings experimentation consists of attempting to start a High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamp with a microwave oven transformer at 2kV.
I must apologise for the flickering in the video - these lamps are so bright the camera just is not happy about it.
The starting process for these lamps is very simple. 240V (ballasted equal to the rating of the bulb) is applied to the terminals of the bulb. Since there is no internal electrical connection, the bulb does not light. An initial pulse of a high voltage is required to start these lamps, typically between 3kV and 4.5kV. However, 2kV from a simple Microwave oven transformer seems to be enough.
Once the arc is going, the high voltage source can be disconnected and the lamp remains lit, since the arc can be sustained by the ballasted 240V input. As the lamp warms up it produces more and more light.
This is a small 100W HPS lamp, and it produces nearly 10,000 lumens of light when at operating temperature. That's pretty impressive for 100W, and that's why these lamps are so efficient.
To correctly ignite a HPS lamp a device called an igniter is used. This tiny device will provide the starting pulse to initiate the arc.

The 2kV transformer will deliver over 1000W as is, and the lamp is only rated for 100W. Because arc lamps are negative resistance devices, it will pull the full 1000W and probably end in a melt down.

Normally these bulbs are started with between 3 and 4kV from a device called an igniter. Here I am not using one but I am instead using the 2kV from a microwave oven transformer to start the lamp. And it does work just as well, only I'd have to manually connect and disconnect the transformer every time I want to turn it on.

I succeeded in getting HPS, CDM/HQI and SOX lamps started with nothing more than a relay, a capacitor and an arduino to control it. Unreliable? Somewhat. the arduino crashed a lot but whenever it successfully made it through the loop of code I set up for it it struck the lamp 9/10 times.

Yes they do, when cold they behave just like a neon lamp (since the tube contains a neon/argon mix) and require a high voltage to initiate the arc.

Unfortunately it does require a ballast to limit the current, and without a high voltage source it won't even light.

Not actually that much. Probably no more than a standard incandescent bulb. The arc tube inside however gets extremely hot - hence it glows red when the lamp is turned off.

We have bought some lights that work with high pressure sodium lamps 100w and 150w but we have a problem the lamps are switched on and once it reaches its maximum brightness, the lamp stop to work, and the ignition cycle is starting again and this condition is continuing without end, please if are you able to tell us what's going on with these lights?

2:15 why is it glowing and Do you know why the camera flickers? because the light flickers. You can record slow motion to it It will be cool. In slow mo, the light is on length is like 2 sec, and turning off length is like 1.5 sec.

Sure, here's a schematic: imgur.com/NoliPeP Terminals [1] are connected together momentarily to ignite the lamp. Provided the lamp's rated voltage and power are not exceeded a ballast is not required to run it.

arc lamps has tendency to pull up more current after time and the current increases so much that it blows up so a ballast is used to control such huge current

As the metal vapor inside lamp heats up, its resistance decreases. The lamp uses more and more current until it destroys itself. The ballast limits the amount of current to the lamp to a healthy level.
