Powering Sega Master System retro console using UGREEN USB-C chargers and adafruit smart leads.

This is part 2 of the Sega Master System series and if you remember I had to replace that rubbish cheap PSU that was causing all the interference. At the start I ordered the Mean Well 9v PSU from ebay and I was confident that would be a good choice and also a polarity inverter so it would work on the SMS. Then the same night I was searching I saw the video from LTT Linus Tech Tips talking about this very subject and it was black friday so I ordered the UGreen Nexode charger and the adafruit power delivery USB-C leads.
The way this works is the Nexode charger supports power delivery protocols and can be told what voltage to output from the USB-C device like a laptop, but in this case the Adafruit lead has a chip in the lead to tell the PSU to output a set voltage like 9V or 12V. Depending on the specs of your PSU you might have something already just like I had the charger from my Pixel 3A mobile, that only supports 5v and 9v, but it would have made a great choice for the SMS if I decided not to order the Nexode. I will get good use out of that charging my studio equipment so money well spent.

That pulsing on the power supply was interesting! Never knew that sort of thing could happen!

The mechanical speccy looks *fantastic*. You've answered the question I've been trying to solve, now got the MeanWell and power inverter on order. Absolutely fantastic - thank you.

Fascinating video Lee! I'm a big fan of modern PSUs for old systems but there are so many options out there. As you cover in the video, not only does a good quality power supply protect the system from damage, it can also improve the video output. Win win!

Next console to try are 2 x Sega Megadrive mk2 i bought faulty, but the barrel jack is different and it says 10v so I wonder if my 9v will work and if the 12v would do some damage.

Very interesting Lee, I expected at least one of the USB power supplies to introduce some noise. I think I might have to pick up that U Green one

Great video, this is a really compelling option for all my old consoles. Also I love the way you pronounce “Linus” 😂

OMG I cringed when I played the recordings back, but it's a low effort video so not going to change it.

I got hold of some micro usb power breakout boards with something similar in mind but haven't got round to doing anything with them yet. Makes it easy to use now with everything it usb powered, doesn't it.

5v usb is not going to work unless you mod the console. I did try the SMS and removed the regulator so I could power directly from 5v, but this bypassed the switch and the polarity protection diode drops the incoming voltage down by almost 1v . This only worked because I was giving it 9v just like it would have normally.

it only works with the voltage of the lead you use and it's labeled on the end so quite easy to use.
