I didn't do the basic checks and paid the price. Dirty ZX Spectrum plus 3 and Gotek woes.

It's time for an Untested Ebay special and this time I have a ZX Spectrum plus 3 to look at. It came with nothing so just the board and I had to bodge together a power supply for the 5v and 12v, it also needs -12v for the rs232, but I am not interested in that at this time.
I also look at fitting a Gotek to the internal and external ports of the plus 3 and I really did go the long way around on this one.
If you're interested I recommend this guide

Fantastic work. That's perseverance for you. And the Spanish artists on the ZX Spectrum are fantastic... some are a bit rude for KZread though!

What a palaver! Some important lessons learned here, though and a good outcome in the end.

it's one problem of making youtube videos and you think you found an interesting fault that will help the video do well and you forget the basics !

case idea. saw the side off and fit the connector closer to the main board. and go with a case similar to your recent design.

@@leesmithsworkshop its not a rare machine by any stretch but in that case, how about a case that holds 2 drives. a slim gotek and slimline 3.5" (nobody really like 3" anyway!)

Still a good result but doesnt it just frustrate you when you realise there was a shorter path to success. one thing I've learnt from watching Louis Rossmans videos on apple stuff is dont just clean it out the box. test it. fix the actual fault it came in with, then diagnose and clean as a whole.. you sometimes clean the clues without realizing it. and yes, step down voltages, not up where you can. much less noisy in my experience. I have one of those boost converters causing a pi to crash. think I'll get a buck and feed it 12v as well.

it's just when you find something and you are determined to find the fault the simple stuff is not interesting enough

Hi Lee, Good work on that board 👍. I have a few Spectrum's to clean up and I am waiting for some IPA to turn up you mentioned that you used some vinegar 1st. What do I need and how do I go about it. Or do you have a video that explains the best process for cleaning these old boards. Cheers, Steve j

Vinegar is used to stop alkaline from spreading and also a good cleaner so you only need that if it has battery damage. I use that in the Atari videos a lot before cleaning again with IPA. You can clean boards with IPA or just deionized water just make sure they are dried correctly
