    As an electrician, thanks for showing people the safe way so that linemen do not get killed. ALSO, Did you confirm if your generator has a “floating neutral” ( neutral and ground are separate in the gen) or a “ bonded neutral” ( neutral and ground are connected in the gen ) ?? When you connect your gen to your house system, you need to separate the neutral and ground in the generator. The reason is because when connecting the gen to your home you have created ONE system. Per code, you can only have one ground per system.

    Hello. I'm trying to get my materials together for the same model generator. I noticed you had a double 50 amp breaker. Is that the size I should use? I'm not savvy to electrical installation, for some reason I thought being as it was a 30amp plug that the cord is for the generator, a double 30amp breaker is what I needed. I have a jacuzzi plug outside with a heavy duty wire run to the panel. I was going to replace it with a generator outlet that you recommended. Thank you!

    Make sure that the wiring is suited to your breaker. Most would recommend 10 gauge wire for a 30 amp breaker. I repurposed a 50 amp breaker that already had 6 gauge wiring to carry that load. As far as breaker, 30 amp should be sufficient as it should be able to handle over 7000 watts on 240v connection.

    Using a 50 amp breaker for a 10 gauge wire is not ideal. Imagine there is a short or connection issue from the generator side, the 10 gauge wire may get warm or even catch on fire, but the breaker may not turn it off.

  • @duskyman1

    That depends a lot on your current panels. It depends a lot on what you have is up to code or not. When an actual electrician pulls a permit and goes into make some changes he may have to bring some older things up to current codes. This can add a lot of cost. It also depends on your panels and if you can put a simple interlock on there or not. If you can, full retail you're probably looking at $150 for the interlock, $30 for a 30 amp generator breaker, $50 for the receptacle, $25 for miscellaneous conduit fittings, $20 for some wire. Then probably about 3 hours of a electrician's time. So a rough estimate would be $450. Of course you can do this yourself for only the cost of the parts if it's that easy. My service panel has no main breaker. So I had to put a interrupt panel in between my service panel and my house which only allows me to attach the generator to the house panel. So mine will not run my big amp items like AC stove water heater or furnace. Those had their own breakers in the service panel by the meter. That's okay because I have small window unit ACS I put in after a storm if the power is out for a few days they use a lot less energy than the big Central AC. Being able to use the water heater or limited use of the stove would be nice but I've always gotten by with just microwave and a toaster oven. And cold showers. I could put in a big 200 amp transfer panel between the meter and the house panel to solve my problem.... Or just replace the whole service panel with one with a main disconnect breaker. That would probably be the easiest and I got a price on that and it was not a nice price.......$3700. when they do this they have to bring things up to code, they do not want to reuse old breakers they want to use all new, etc. Plus they've got to get a permit and an inspection etc etc. They charge for all the time that it requires from them by the hour. So in the end I put in my panel myself for about $400 total. This is why so many people will just flip their breaker and use a suicide cord and plug into their dryer socket. That cost $50, and you're really doing the same thing you just don't have the idiot proof interlock. However after running extension cords through doors for years I was sick of extension cords and that was my main reason for going ahead and putting in the generator receptacle and transfer panel outside to basically power what I needed in the house. Turn on whatever light you want instead of just a few lamps. Run ceiling fans instead of just floor fan. Don't have to pull the refrigerator and microwave out so you can have them plugged in to extension cords etc. That was all a royal p i t a. It is well worth whatever it costs imo for ease. It took me many years and several episodes without power for a few days to do mine because I just knew mine wasn't simple. There was really only one company that made the kind of transfer panel I needed and that was reliance panel link

    The 6250 will run ALMOST everything in most houses that have gas appliances. What the 6250 will not run is most residential AC units. The 6250 will not deliver the locked rotor amperage necessary to run anything over about a 2 ton AC. I use the interlock too, and I love it. I can run the central heat, but not the central air.

  • @shenmisheshou7002

    My guess is your AC is a smaller unit. The 6250 won't deliver nearly enough current to start my 3.5 ton unit. The locked rotor amperage of the unit is 108 amps and the Champion 6250 is only rated at 52 amps (26 amps over each leg of a 240 volt circuit) and based on the typical LRA of a 3 ton unit, it would probably trip off for most of them.. But maybe not. I know it won't start mine and a 100 amp LRA is pretty typical of a 3.5 ton unit and 75 LRA is typical of most 3 ton units.

    @@sony1998 I think it would clearly help but hard start kits are very hard on motor windings. I am considering a soft start kit though. These are much more expensive , but I think they are perhaps a better approach. This would reduce the startup current by about 60% so for my unit, this might be enough to start it. LRA is a bit more than 100 amps and the 6250 will put out a peak of 52 amps, but that is cutting it close. It would cost me about $300 to find out though.

  • @shenmisheshou7002

    @shenmisheshou7002

    @@sony1998 In addition to the response I just put up, people also forget about the inrush current on the evaporator blower motor. My unit starts the compressor first and when the pressure at the evaporator is sufficient it turns on the fan, but this fan draws about 1400 watts on startup and I think about 800 watts run. This totals out to a lot of current for a small generator. My primary concern was heat during prolonged power outages in the winter where the power can take hours to be restored (4 hours day before yesterday). In the summer we sometimes have outages but these are usually no more than 90 minutes.

    @@JCTFIXIT Always connect the cord first before starting generator. The plugs in your house do not have hot extended leads like the generator cord. It also properly grounds the generator before you start it for safety and there won’t be any loads on it due to your interlock kit. Also make sure you float the neutral in your generator because there should only be 1 bonded neutral in a system and that will come from your distribution panel. Yeah everything works great the one thing you do have to watch out for is making sure you are load balancing. You don't want all your load on only one side. So for example if you are running electric dryer on one side it would be unwise to run microwave on same side. Make sure its on opposite side of split phase.
