The wheels on my daily had been looking sad far a while now with the clear coat failing and falling off. So when I got a flat and needed to get new wheels I thought it would be the perfect time to give them a new look by powder coating them at home!

You can have a blasting cabinet at home and I’m sure you’re not thinking an oven is unfeasible to have at a home right? If you can’t also think enough to understand that sanding is an option, this whole process is out of your reach.

Joseph Samsor you can also have a car lift or a 20 ton press at home if you buy it but you’re building a shop at that point. Also, he says at home while he’s at a shop with stripped out cars...

I don’t know why people are bitching about this being at home. He didn’t send them out to be powder coated. He did it himself. If you don’t have the room or the tools to do it, that’s one thing. But don’t bust this guys chops for having a simple set up. It works. It’s not elaborate. If you don’t have a compressor or a garage even, then maybe this project isn’t for you. But it definitely can be done “at home”.

Everyone is complaining this guy has a shop. Sandblasting cabinets and a good enough compressor isn't impossible to get. Cabinet can be made if one really wanted. Free electric ovens are everywhere. Powder coating kit can be bought at harbor freight. You're already taking wheels to a tire shop to dismount anyway, take it to a blasting shop and do the powder and bake at home..

Really like it, seems to be a good unit. We added a second light inside that made a world of difference and buy a bunch of the glass protectors to keep the glass clear so you can see. Another thing that we got that should have come standard is a lip that goes on the inside of the door. With iut the lip a bit of sand falls out every time you open it up but thats the only flaw iv seen so far!

  • @bobbyread

I'm about to do this on some Porsche wheels. What blasting media did you use? Do you remember the grit?

  • @Petrol360

    @Petrol360

    6 жыл бұрын

I used Diamond brand fine grit, I picked it up at tractor supply. I tried there medium/course and it seemed to be eating into the wheels a little so I swapped it out. Best advise I can give is to check the wheels with a really bright flash light before you put them in the oven, the color I used was hard to tell when it was not thick enough in spots. Also do the cracks and tight corners of the wheels first, the powder has a hard time sticking where corners meet unless you get an adjustable power supply. Its a fun project and saves a ton of money doing it at home, probably only used one pound of powder and one bag of sand so id say $60 for all 4 wheels plus say $20 to pull the tires off and remount them.

You stated prebake was 400F but didn't give a total paint bake time or exactly how to prep the rim besides the prebake. Do you have to electrify the part at all for the powder to adhere? Thanks great video overall I'm just a super noob so wish there was a bit more info here and there

  • @Petrol360

Every powder has different instructions on how long and how to bake at. Thats why I didn’t go in to detail on baking them. And yes the whole part needs to have high voltage running through the part. Just clip the lead from the powder coated to the part or a metal part touching it and you are good to go.

Something I had never conceded but it could become an issue if you keep it in the oven to long. Some alloys ate aged at 325F so powder coating could cause some issues. But with the process so common and no issues myself I think that if its done correctly you minimize risk. My next set of wheels will be sprayed, simply because im learning how to shoot paint now.

Ya thankfully this was my first in years, but it was a good thing because the tires were starting to dry rot. I think the dealership I bought the car from must have used tires that had been laying around for a while. So it needed it anyway and fixing the failed clear coat was a plus!

It is but if you have the time its much cheaper them a new set of wheels. Or buy a used set and give them a fresh look.

Most houses have single phase 220v run to them and can easily be wired to run a compressor or oven like we have. If you don’t have access to a blasting cabinet or don’t have someone locally that can blast them you can always use paint stripper and sand paper to get the wheels clean. Just have to think outside the box a little!

Anyone should be able to do this at home. If you don’t have a way to sandblast you could use paint stripper. A broken kitchen range can be found used for cheap or free. The one we use has a broken glass cook top. The powder coating gun uses very low pressure so a simple pancake compressor will work great. A who lot is possible who you put your mind to it and start asking yourself “how can I” rather then “I can’t”.

Seriously?! "Powder Coating Wheels At Home" And this dude pretty much has the equivalent of a friggin' paint shop as his "garage".. Hold on! Let me pause the vid while I put my car parts in my Kitchen Stove! smh

Oven was bought off Craigslist for $30 with a broken cook top. You have to think outside the box sometimes to save some money in order to build the things you want.

Oh, I hear you...and congrats on finding a $30 stove with a broken cook top...…..HOWEVER when people click on a video that says "Powder Coating Wheels At Home!"....we don't expect to use our KITCHEN STOVE or go on Craigslist to find a "$30 stove with a broken cook top". Not to mention finding a stove outlet to plug a full sized stove inside our Garage where MOST of us expected to do our DIY car projects. Lets just say that your "Situation" is pretty much an anomaly for us to try and follow along with. I totally respect the ingenuity....however it's just not practical for 70% of the population clicking on this vid.
