This is SO important! Amazing talk, some really clear messages and actions we need to take as a community to stop exploitation even by those who don't realise they're exploiting.

You are absolutely right! Have done 'humanitarian' work over 7 years. Aid, creates dependency, disempowers people. Yes, there are lots of unqulafied people sent to do work they have no or little knowledge about... Thanks for sharing

I agree on her point that voluntary work is in the same way Voluntary tourism or Voluntourism and becoming a temporary solution to the worlds poverty problem or may even promote it. I agree what are needed are sustainable long term solutions to conquer World poverty. Impressive talk and never thought about it until now.

the issue seems to be more in the organisations who put these trips together surely there is worthwhile work that volunteers could do that would be helpful to the community and do not people out of work, it seems to be possible in wealthy countrys and if these companys were doing a more ethical job on these trips they could provide the intended effect to the person volunteering and the community they visit.

Totally agree with it all. What is the answer to those people that do want to "make a difference" then like yourself? Should they just be told to donate money blindly and believe it is going to the right place then?

100% right. Volun-tourism, orphanages, and international adoption are all extremely problematic.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy honestly. You are where you are living your good life in developed countries because your existence is at the sacrifice of some other elsewhere, whether it is exploiting the poor, colonising or leveraging off poorer places to maintain your developed lives. And sadly as noble as you sound, it is the way it is as humans.

I think you're overthinking it. It's a way to draw funds from people who like to feel good about themselves. Sure, there are other ways. But vanity is the greatest inducement to charity.

When I was in school, our school really pushed Volenteer Tourism. As an African Brit, this absolutely disgusts me. It's a form of colonisation, and there is no need for unqualified 18 year olds to be sent to African orphanages, and tasked to "build houses" and work as "medics". It takes away jobs from the local community. I wish all schools in the UK could see this video and understand that what they're doing is so damaging.
