Paddle out reminds me of getting out in Lake Michigan on a gale force storm, maybe only topping out 10' but a lot of water moving. All energy wasted, followed by getting cleaned up all the way back in.. that barrel looked psychotic! Maybe greatest POV risk vs reward video to date. Every second Worth It!

It was interesting seeing you use the Technique that you described in a previous video... as you flip over and bear hug your board and then pop up ...that is until it got to the point where you couldn't do that anymore...then it got really exhausting.

Really interested to see a how a pro does it. Got the feeling you aren't used to it. :) I guess nobody ever is. As an amateur I've paddled out 4 times in South Africa through the white water with really big waves - for me that is. :) Three times it took me over 40 minutes, but I was on a 5' 10" / 6' 2" as I didn't have a bigger board. On the 3 long paddles I gave up before I got outside - once because I got dangerously tired after 45 minutes of sprinting and although I nearly made it in a lull I knew I was at risk (I was on my own on these times), and the other two times because when I got to within 50-100m of the breaking zone I had to admit what I already pretty much expected before I started, the board just wouldn't be able to hold my line on take off. But it was awesome to see and feel the raw power. No matter how deep I went the breaking waves would just reach down, pick me up and throw me around so hard, like giant dog chewing and tossing a tiny rag doll, and I lost just about as much ground as I gained, or more sometimes. For those South Africans out there, the places were Vic Bay (too big to jump off the point, about 12-14' foot), Sedgefield (15'+) and Noordhoek (not sure how big, but they were full close outs from end to end across the whole bay!!! Took me minutes just to ride back in.) The time I did make it out was really interesting. It was at Muizenberg beach break and the waves were 15', big but slow, I saw 2 rips, the outer one started only about 50m diagonally from where the inner one ended, and I managed to catch both rips, got out in about 25 minutes. From the take off zone maybe a mile out from shore I was literally looking into the whole of Vishoek beach. Now this is the interesting part: on my first wave, the lip caught me before I got to the bottom and took me down deep. When I came up, I couldn't see my board. I felt for my leash and it was loose - dammit, it's broken! Where did it break? I pulled the leash in to see the end but before I had pulled two hand's worth it went taut. The wave was long gone, the boils were subsiding, but my board was stuck down there. I pulled on the leash. No give. Weird. I pulled again, harder. No give!! It took as long to do it as it takes to read this. The next wave was coming. I pulled with all my might. No! No! NO!! YES! It felt like something just let the board go and it instantly snapped up through the water and spun into the air. How weird was that. Needless to say this was the deepest I had ever been and I was rattled. I've had a board pulled down by currents before but never for more than 6 or 7 seconds. After diving under the next wave I checked the board for tooth marks lol. Not a mark. But I was too jumpy to stick around. I just paddled like hell to catch the next white water wave and took the long ride in. Only one wave that day. But a memory that will never leave me.

This is so amazing, as a beginner it helps me so much understanding how to manage paddling in tough situation ! And the overview camera is great to realize where you are according to the waves and how big they are !

Wow.. I've done many sports over my lifetime.. Skated, snowboarded in the early days of the sport. Ski both water and snow.. pretty active guy over 55 years. Only surfed a couple times which definitely means 'i don't surf'. But being a California guy and loving watching videos of people who do extremely technical things well.. throw danger in there and I'm a fan. Love watching you guys surf these heavy waves. I've just stumbled onto this channel yesterday and I gotta tell you this is some really compelling stuff. These paddle outs.. especially with the split screen in the corner really add to the drama and effort you guys put in to catching these things. Great idea giving the paddle outs a piece of the lime light. I don't surf but I know the ocean and that shit is epic. Then the up shots of big blue trying to fold you in... F'ing amazing. I watch a lot of surf channels.. You guys are putting up videos that are next level as to putting the viewer (there). Again that's coming from a non surfer. Your water and work footage is so compelling I forget there's world class surfing taking place. "Hey 'Van's.. give this guy whatever he wants.. This Is top shelf entertainment.. More than just a surfer video.

Days like that are great for keeping in paddle shape at least. Especially when your living the dream like you are, living in paradise with perfect waves in the winter and traveling the world to catch dream swells when they’re forecasted. Keep it up buddy. Your always happy spirit always keeps me motivated for my 1 trip every couple years. San Diego can get good and are nearby but our Channel Islands take away the raw swell power so it’s not the same as Hawaii, central Mexico, Nicaragua etc. . .
