My personal favorite eject is blowing the takeoff, getting stuck in the lip, board flips over as we're going over the falls, and land on the fins.

Wow man i really like these kinds of videos. It’s very uncommon to have a surfer at this level who is so articulate and can picture different scenarios so accurately. You would be a hell of an instructor. Im going out there next thursday and def try to use these tips on closeouts. Greetings from Uruguay, and keep on uploading this kind of stuff!

I'm almost 50 now. Been an avid surfer since I was 12. I'm a cold water, Pacific ocean waterman. From SCUBA to body surfing to living on a boat. Mother Ocean is the meanest and most beautiful woman in existence. Nathan, what I wouldn't give to have someone share this incredible knowledge when I was learning. You're sharing pure gold here. Of course the young can't appreciate the value of your info...but I hope you know that we get it. Everything you said here was not new to me, or many of my age, but I appreciate what you're doing for the young or new. Bravo. Much respect. Keep doing what you're doing.
Nathan- I don"t know if you read these comments but your barrel and duck dive advice videos have been THE most helpful tools I've used to improve in becoming a marine mammal like yourself. Super appreciate it brother
Just got into a bad situation in a barrel and found this video. What a great source. Nathan described super realistic scenarios and excellent and clear explanations to avoid bad endings like the one had with four stitches on the neck and broken teeth. I can’t wait for the next barrel, but with more knowledge now! Meow
So good man, wow! You should put time stamps in these with titles (you can just put them in the description like this 0:00 - introduction 1:47 - X impact 3:53 - Y impact etc) this is such a valuable video resource and the more people can reference it the more helpful it will be. Just a suggestion, but dude...SO good. Thank you!
Super rad having learned all these techniques myself and having them backed up by you! Totally agree with the water tension thing! Have woken up the next morning after some "concrete water" with minor concussion symptoms more often than I would like...
This was great! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Falling has a steep learning curve, especially for someone like me that isn't super comfortable in the barrel. Much appreciated brotha!

Hi nathan. Thank you so much for this informative video about technical aspects of surfing! Exactly what I was looking for :)
These videos are so good, all the things that no one tells you.
Great video Nathan, thanks a lot!!! What about kicking the board forward and butt diving (or sitting on the wave...), then doing a jelly-fish like movement with the arms to move out of the wave pull? Any inputs? Have worked for me in some situations, specially on the backside...
Thx Nathan. You explain things so well. Very much appreciated 🤙 R.I.P Derek Ho ❤🙏
Your videos always help so much !! Thanks nate you rock bro !!!

Thanks for making this! I have seen you and JOB bail on Pipeline waves by jumping feet first and always wondered how you did that with shallow reef below. Now I know! :D Snook is too cute!
This is so helpful! I love your theory on the water being stretched haha it is interesting, yes it’s strange, but I believe it!! Thank you for these very informative rambles, keep it up please!! 👏🏼🙏
Always wondered how this worked. I feel enlightened!!!
Great tips as always Nathan Florence! Thanks a lot! I was wondering what the disadvantage of shooting my board forward and jumping feet first off the back. That way the board doesn't have the chance of hitting me in the head. Is there a higher chance of board snapping? Or something else? I live in a punchy beach break area and do this often in closeouts or when I can't exit correctly.
What an absolute beast of a video. Thank you Nathan ! A Spanish surf instructor I know lost his right eye when falling in the barrel. The nose of his board scooped it out when he jumped forward and thus I’m utterly terrified of the idea of making contact with the nose while ”jumping forward” as I’m a newbie in the barrel department, but eager to improve. You guys have any tips on how to “make sure” you avoid the board while performing the jump? Especially backside seems tricky when u don’t have time to jump back / steer the board away from you. Thanks in advance and greetings from Finland 🇫🇮
Value for days. Thanks Nathan!
Good job braking this down. Everything is well said. R.I.P. Uncle Derek
Thank you, that seal maneuver has saved my ass numerous times since watching! More of these tutorials please!
Nathan, you're my inspiration, and thank you for this videos that brighten my days ! Come to Tokyo Aurore
Thanks for another great vlog! BTW, what's up with the cable coming out of the ceiling and plugged into the outlet?
Prayers out to you and your friends and family. Stay "hunkered down" as we say in Florida. Could be some lifetime swells on the south shore ahead of the H. Dougie.
Dude, you are the best!!!!! I've been looking for this topic for the last week, and found nothing, since I'm getting quite screwed everytime I fall in a backside barrel. Thanks!!!!

Another great vid mate! Any tips for avoiding your board on late back hand turns? broke my jaw in 4 places last week...
Wow! Thanks for sharing this... Honestly, I've always wondered how could you guys master tuberiding by learning over a reef break! Now I know beach breaks are your school, and I will look differently to a close-out line-up 😉🤙 seal turn was the best. We naturally do this on bodysurf to avoid the smach, but never realized could be used on surfing too 🤪

Hi I’m. New to surfing and very bad u inspire me
Really good insights bruddah! thankssss
Great video, rewatching prior to a barrel trip, and not to be a dxck, what you are discussing at 10:50ish is that water molecules have a strong bonds: hydrogen bonds, so what your describing sounds like it make sense, I've yet to experience that, but sounds scary.

Hi Nate, 100% agree, you'll learn more trying to ride closeouts. Snookies got it right, eliminate all snarky lizards!!
Wondered why you were so good , didn’t know after following you for a year that you were Jon Jon’s bro lol
A thing I learned with 40 years of surfing on sharp reefs including live reefs was wear reef booties. Everyone scoffs at them but it's nice being able to touch down and not get torn up.

Hey its the nate and snook show! Barrels and kitty living!
You should write a little book about these tips. There isn’t a lot of information out there like this! Thanks!
so its almost more important to learn how to fall than it is to actually barrel ride, thanks Nate
Always the most useful clips, thanks nathan!
Still haven’t been barreled lol been going at it all summer thanks for the video tho super helpful
I'll be sure to do this next time I'm imagining myself in a barrel 🌊
love it . thx!
Can you show more video clips of the last option you described? So often I watch you guys go through the backside of The wave in a close out but the video gets cuts to the next clip. I want to see the progression you guys go through on a bail....Tbh I really wanna see all the after parts of you guys bailing on waves. Maybe an aerial view with a drone.
Thanks Nathan! BRO!
Hi ! Should you have the time, one jump backwards or frontward ?
My prayers are with you, your family and friends. May that hurricane turn right.
Hi, i have a little problem with airs and i think you could help me. I'm 19 years old and i'm from the north west of Spain. Last year I had a knee injury triying to do a baclside 360 and landed pretty badly on my right foot. Fortunately I didnt have to go throw any surergy. Since then i have been sticking my board to the face of the wave and i havent been trying any airs, i love big cutbacks and vertical turns so that is what i've been practicing the most. A few days ago i felt confident enough to try to do a fs air reverse but i landed it a bit hard on my knee and it certainly hurted a little bit. I wanted to know if you could do a tutorial on how to land well and safely airs. I see you and your brother fly above the lip like nothing but it's the landing what scares me the most, i dont want to break my knee or have to go throw surergy or anything. What tips would you give me to land air safer? Thanks!!
Great explanations!!
Very nice information thanks NF
As a 50 year old Canadian, I am sure this will come in handy one day. LoL. I still found it fascinating and Snook is the best.Cheers mate.
great info! thank you! that cat is not giving up isnt it ? HAHA
RIP Dereck Ho, blessed to have been able to see him surf with my own eyes.
Thank’a for all these details that’s awesome!!!!! You talk about leash size when you have to jump front of your board. How do you choose your leash size? Especially step up
@NathanFlorence
3 жыл бұрын
I use a strong 6ft-7ft leash, ideally I shove my board to wards the beach away from where I am jumping
