I am so thankful to see there’s a different one I can order. My reason for buying them in the first place is so they’d have automatic water except the chicks aren’t pecking it therefore the water is always empty and I have to go out there and fill the cups which defeats the purpose. Lol thanks for sharing

I am so glad to see I’m not alone in my dissatisfaction with those cups. I will also tell everyone that the yellow thing that the chickens beaks are supposed to fill the cup with didn’t work well when I tried to get them to fill. It sits to low in the cup and hampers the movement thus not allowing much water to run into the cup. I need the kind that will screw directly into a bucket even if they aren’t cups. I just want good quality watering attachments that won’t rust, break or clog up. I have even purchased a pre made bucket watering system that is leaking. I originally purchased the simple style waterer with the metal insert from China when I first started out (they were crap and are still sitting in my barn) I have since purchased American made but still have had issues with both kinds. Help! Do you know a good company that sells well made for DIY systems that run off of PVC. Thanks for your video Appreciate it

I have a 275 gallon IBC tote set up with a PVC line running off of it into the chicken yard, and there are 8 trigger cups on the line in the coop. Been there for 5 years, never had a problem with it, BUT, it's out in their yard and nowhere near their feed, so the cups stay clean. But if you put them inside a cage where the birds can get feed and crap in them, yeah they'll be jammed up and constantly running in no time.

(it's in the shade, no algae, couple drops of chlorine or vinegar to keep it clean. The red ones screw into a pvc T in a pipe. but the white cups look pretty good to.

I've been using the red cups for about 3 yrs now, I periodically ( maybe once a month} flush them out for just a second. I will get the occaional bird that will hop up & sit on one, causing it to run a little extra, but they don't stay up there long. In hard freezes, I drain & water by hand or the free standing water tubs, that is use for new chicks.

Install the cups on your PVC line. Make sure you use Teflon tape. At the end of the PVC line make sure you have a clean out. The biggest mistake I see that people do when installing these is you must have a 5 psi regulator. This is a low pressure system. I hear so many people hooking up the water hose to the end of the PVC line turning on the hose and that is when you will have problems.

  • @UrbanAviary

Each one of them has problems. He's right about the first cup. The problem with his style of cup, which I've used, is that quail have the uncanny ability to knock those cups sideways by climbing all over them or running in to them. This will cause the cup hinge to come loose from the center, and all the water pours out. Nipples have different issues based on their orientation. I've never tried them with quail, but ducks are pretty good at jamming the nipples open.

@@UrbanAviary I only have 3 hens so far. I'm using a litter pail as the water basin. It has one of those Puck heaters in it but the cups keep freezing over. I was thinking about wrapping some copper wire around the puck and trying to run it to the bowls to see if it would transfer enough heat, but I don't think it will.

If the wire was inside the hose then it might do the trick. The problem is keeping the water that's sitting in the cup from freezing. I'm doing a lot of r&d right now to figure out a solution.

@@UrbanAviary My setup just has the cups directly attached to the bucket. At this point I'll probably just make two buckets and swap them out daily. One can thaw out inside while the other's out in the coop. I mean I have to check for eggs everyday anyway. I will sub and look forward to your upcoming video.

Wow! I have ALSO USED the clear one you just illustrated. Unfortunately the same happens after about a month. In this case the valve is made of silicon which invariably gets clogged with feed mixed with water leading to algae formation. I would say that whichever drinkers are used require regular servicing and disinfection. Very important to also ensure good hygiene for the quails.

These cups suck. I watched the video. Bought two packs set them in my quail breeding cages. Everyday I come into water all over the floor. They jump on them it spills. They root there heads under the cup lifting it up enough to make it pour out. They are spilling on average 3 gallons a day. Everyday. I have moved them around the cage. Done everything I can. These just suck

I tried this solution (white one) and I do not recommend it. The hens and ducks lifted the cups so often that the water was constantly flowing and spilling into the coop. Horrible mess.

I would say that if you claim that food accumulates and jams the fort water cup, then wouldn’t food accumulate in the second water cup and keep the cup in a down shutting position leaving the cups not to replenish with water? 🧐

it really takes seconds per cup. Hose it down to remove all the dirt and crap. There’s also chemical buildup from your water also. I use similar one like in the video and the red fillip cup from RentACoop and never had any problem. People are lazy and don’t clean them at all. You supposed to drill a hole on a 5 gallon bucket or pvc pipe and attached to it. Don’t be lazy and clean them.

If you raising quail this is not the solution for them. The problem with these is the quail will rest or push the cup up consistently and water will overflow to the poop tray and you have a mess. The best solution is the button water feeder. Commerical quail farm use them so they know all the isue.

Not even gonna watch the video. NEITHER! Any sort of CUP is a bad idea. NO matter what brand or concept, they all have the same problem, they get nasty dirty and you have to keep cleaning them. not to mention that in winter time the freeze. Forget all that and just use horizontal nipples.
