That was really fascinating, as a patient of yours, I have had my tonsils removed and the reduction of my tongue and soft palate and I hope to see you again soon for further investigations. Although I feel sure that these interventions have improved my OSA, the last home sleep test was not a success as I had a really restless night waking up multiple times. My wife says that although my snoring has improved, I do still snore quite loudly, but rather than snoring it is more loud breathing. Interestingly she also says that I only snore whilst sleeping on my back. I know that when I wake up, I am more often than not on my back and have a sore throat. This device certainly seems worth a go and I didn’t realise that it could actually train you to sleep on your side. Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge via KZread and your email.

Thank you Dr Vic Veer ! I couldn’t wait to try this. My OSA journey has had me using CPAP sort of successfully but at the expense of a good nights sleep as I do move around a lot when sleeping and the mask wakes me. I almost became an insomniac due to sore throat and mask discomfort. Then I tried a MAD and it helped but my throat was still getting sore I guess because I a was still snoring and my O2 ring numbers were not perfect. Still dipping to the seventies occasionally. So After watching this video a week ago I strapped on my daypack stuffed with some memory foam and put in my MAD and proceeded to sleep nearly 8 hours with no drops below 93 on my O2 ring. What’s more 15% of that sleep was good quality deep sleep! I have had very similar results every night since. Feeling a little silly I couldn’t work it out for myself. It’s so wonderful to feel normal again even if my bedtime attire looks a little silly.😂

As well as having chronic sleep apnoea, i literally stop breathing sometimes (without my tongue or throat collapsing). I cant sleep with the CPAP at all and am desperate for surgery. I had an accident 4 months ago and had an intubation tube inserted, I had the best night sleep ever. I'm new to your channel and am binge watching your videos in the hope i find something that can help me. God bless you for taking the time to make your videos.

I have one quite similar. Anyway I am most likely to stubborn in my sleep, cause even with it on I ended up on the back in some kind of strange gymnastic pose and my back didnt like it at all. So I redesigned it and made it even more harder to sleep on the back. Just ended up with more gymnastics.. Also I get hurt in shoulders and arms if sleeping on the side for to long time, and I have about every special pillow that is available to make it more comfty. Also bought am inflatable bed to sleep on my stomach with breathing holes and everything.. Worked great for 3 hours until I decided that it was time to sleep on the back again^^

Dr Veer I have found your information to be very interesting. I do use a cpap machine, and have so for over 7 years. It did make an amazing difference, but I would like to do everything I can to reduce or eliminate the problem. I am constantly having to adjust the mask through the night, and it leaks most of the time. I have lost just over 30 pounds, with more to go. I have also started doing the recommended facial exercises. I have an appointment with my Dr this Thursday, and will bring this information to her. My overall fitness needs much work, so I will get on with that as well. I believe all this things will reduce my need for the cpap machine or perhaps something else, such as the IPAP machine you were demonstrating. I did sign up to use the Snore Dr App. I do live in Canada, and hope to live in your beautiful country, Ireland and parts of Europe for a couple of years. I am retired and no spring chicken. Thank you, Elaine

I used the back pack with the inflatable balloon device, but I finally just broke down and bought a CPAP machine After using a custom made dental device for over a year, I had enough and now I am able to sleep without worrying that I will turn over on my back because the CPCP machine takes care of the air pressure.

Hi Vik, thanks for all your excellent research and information to help people sleep better. I'm very healthy and fit, but have struggled with snoring for many years. Sleeping on my side makes a significant improvement in the quality of my sleep, but I haven't been able to train myself to stay on my side. Thanks to this video I'm going to try a backpack. The sleep doctors in my area mainly rely on a home sleep studies using electronic sleep monitors. The concern I have is that the device only records one night. One night just doesn't seem appropriate for a comprehensive sleep evaluation. I like the sound of your drug induced sleep evaluation, but it's not available in my area. Any suggestions?

You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear the term “dise”. I’ve tried to explain this multiple doctors who didn’t know what I meant. Now I can finally tell them this, I want to know where the apnea is happening. I have a hard time sleeping with the home sleep study stuff. But I when I did test. Was moderate for apnea. So I use a dental mouth piece which has helped, but have had issues getting the courage to retest. Thank you, now I can per-sue this option. Question though, in the us, what type of doctor would do this? Ear nose and throat?

My brother only has apneas on one side, and on his back. I constantly have to wake him and have him move to other side, then they go away almost completely. If he drinks he has it on every side no matter what, and worse from the alcohol. Try a side sleep pillow or bed risers to incline your sleep before buying more expensive thing id say.

I have had 2 sleep studies, 1 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I had 80 interruptions in an hour. They were going to put me on a more powerful Bi-pap machine but after the study they reduced my pressure to 15 and they said I would be better using my Cpap. I'm really having a rough time for the last 6 years. I had to have my cataracts taken off both eyes and what happened was I needed a Corneal transplant on my left eye and it has never been right. I can't use my Cpap machine as I have to wear a plastic cover over my eye to protect it and so can't wear cpap as it is a whole face model as I also sleep with my mouth open. I wonder if I will die some night as I wake up gasping for air. I sleep on my sides preferable the left side and have never slept on my back. Family tells me I'm the loudest snorer they have ever heard. It's embarrassing and I think I'm worse. Any thoughts for me?

very few people have true OSA only when sleeping on their stomach. it is probably a device error (which is far more common). I would do an in-hospital sleep study and check the results against the video of you sleeping. a lot of the time the machine gets sleeping on your back mixed up with sleeping on your stomach. if you watch the video you'll see what is actually happening. also check if you snore in every direction as snoring and sleep apnoea are different things.

Nose dialators 3. Tape or chin strap 4. Any info on ibprofen and or cold before bed? (attempting to shrink to reduce swelling or inflamation throat etc...) 5. toungue holder 6. Mouthpiece - I might try all of these together, also last thought is there any sleep monitor / sleep apnea monitor i can test myself nightly & "purchase" for myself, that can really monitor how many sleep apneas decrease as i add on the next trick

Hi Dr. Veer. I had a DISE done here in Canada. They found a tongue and soft palate obstruction. My sleep study gave AHI of 29 on my back and 7 on my side. I've been trying positional therapy and I do feel somewhat better but not completely refreshed. Does positional therapy not work for soft palate obstruction? I'm considering using a massage table and sleeping on my stomach with my head pointing straight down. They are recommending I get a MAD because they did a jaw thrust during the DISE and it showed a slight opening at both the palate and tongue. Wondering if I should also try the iNAP before the MAD. It's been many years of suffering but I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Probably not without physically pulling the chin and tongue forward. The tongue falls backwards because it's relaxed and gravity. I wish I had realized sooner I had no idea I had sleep apnea bcos I was happening while I was asleep and was probably lasting for a very short while that I didn't pick up on it, I am also not aware that I snore, I have been using a white noise device for 2 years to block out noise from outside my room that's been waking me up, so that hasn't helped in order for a family member to hear snoring and pick it up. However I get post nasal drip and constant mucus in my throat and for years I've had to clear my throat so many times during the day, now instead of snoring causing the apnea it could be the huffing out the mucus causes the apnea instead. anyway a few times last year I couldn't breath while under the blanket so I assumed it's the blanket, I've woken up during night with my heart racing as well...never knew why and just ignore it. Anyway this year march 2023 I woke up in the morning gasping for oxygen, flipped on my knees at the same time I was post op 2 weeks from a major surgery and should have not been in that position but I couldn't breath for about 5 seconds while awake. My throat was just closed up. It was crazy. Still I didn't know that it causes heart problems and brain degeneration. Now that I know that as well I am more adamant to fix it, however recently it's become more noticeable as it happening more often. It seems like it starts to happen even when I not gone into deep sleep. I hope it has not affected the recovery of my operation as I had lots of internal incisions as well. The nurse tat the hospital did say that when I dosed off for some seconds my oxygen levels dropped and she put the oxygen machine on me and it was so nice I could breath and sleep so peacefully. Anyway may give Vik a visit in the future and have started sleeping on my side as well. I think bcos I've become more mindful I'm noticing the apnea more as soon as it happens. I wish I could just sleep on my back it so much more comfortable 😢

Are you sure that your sleep study says that you have positional sleep apnoea? it is relatively uncommon as most people are only very slightly better sleeping on the side. check your sleep study again. if you don't have positional OSA, these devices won't do anything.

I bought a female sports bra, and placed 2 small massage balls in either side where the pads slide in and wear it in reverse. This means that when I roll over from either side, the ball stops me, whereas having a tennis ball in the middle, can as stated, not achieve the desired result. It's also better for me, cause I don't like wearing pyjamas or even t-shirts to bed.

I like the idea of this but it’s so difficult to stay on one side the entire night. It becomes very uncomfortable. I tend to flip from one side to the other…but I do believe I spend some time on my back too. So my search for a therapy that doesn’t involve CPAP goes on

Hello doctor. I have position dependent sleep apnea. I used woodyknows back pack and it worked perfectly well. It didnt let me sleep on my back. Few months back I used it for 2.5 months continuously. I guess continuously sleeping on side for 2.5 months 6 hours on each day I developed sciatic nerve issue. I slept on my right side continuously and the symptoms were on off numbness at bottom of left heel and on off pinching sensation at tip of penis. Initially left knee didnt allow me to walk but that subsided after two days when i crossed my legs frequently. The numbness and pinching symptoms i experience almost every day. After i knew this i immediately stopped using back pack. After stopping backpack i didnt notice much improvement in numbness and pinching. A week back i used backpack again for 3days continuously, numbness and pinching sensation increased and i stopped it again. Can using backpack continuously cause sciatic nerve issues and symptoms i got? Sorry for keeping my comment long. Thank you.

sounds like sleeping on your side is causing your spine to compress a nerve. lots of things cause this, I would get your spine checked out and work out what the problem is.

For men: Probably fine. If you have wide hips and a tiny waist side sleeping is just terrible for your spine though. The only way it can work is one leg bent at the hips, half on your stomach, which doctors say is actually the most unhealthy sleeping position overall. I mean, better to have back pain than no oxygen , but it's not great.

How are you supposed to switch sides with these on, when one side of the body starts to feel uncomfortable after a while of laying down on in it? Sitting up and turning to the other side wakes me up too much and rolling over the stomach with crossed arms is kind of uncomfortable as well I never seem to be able to sleep more than two ours at once before waking up and having to switch sides again. Any help is welcome. :)

Tomorrow I’m going to try to get in touch with the company but it’s a good idea. Better than surgery and I am a woman who has the exact same problem.
