POST-WAR AUSTINS ft 1940s - 1960s cars | ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Classic Austins of the post-war period, ie the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, form this unique collection of original motoring photographs. These Austin car images are a mix of those from my own photo collection, and many sent in by followers of the Old Classic Car channel.
Austins of the 1940s are represented by classic cars such as the Austin A40 Devon, the stately Austin 16, and the Austin 8 & 10. The next decade is also very well represented, with numerous examples of the A40 Somerset, A30, A35 and early A40 Farina, A105 Westminster, Gipsy, the A55 Cambridge in both Farina and pre-Farina form, and less-common sightings such as the A40 Sports and an Austin Westminster ute.
Head into the 1960s and cars such as the A60 Cambridge, Mk2 A40 Farina, Austin 1100, and various Minis, feature regularly, in the UK and also further afield.
As a long-term owner of various classic Austins over the years, and having learnt to drive (officially) on an Austin Mini Mk1 estate followed by our trusty A40 Mk1, I've always had a soft spot for the products of Longbridge in Birmingham.
Let me know in the comments which Austins you've owned over the years, or which model(s) you own an example of now.

Hi Rick, I do love these videos of period photos. I had a 1959 Mk1 Austin A40 Farina, complete with flying A on the bonnet. I drove it from London to Truro twice, but it really was a struggle ! It was re registered as RSJ 749. Simple car to maintain and very comfy ! Thanks for creating these videos for us, they make excellent viewing. Take care 🙂

Very enjoyable and hope to see many more uploads. A lot of the pics were familiar some models not so. Only certain models in a line were exported to Canada so its nice to see the other variations. I watch your uploads and your son Harley's as well. Some fantastic cars in your Cars and Coffee videos. Makes and models you would never see in Nova Scotia.

Yet another great video Richard, I owned an Austin A40 Cambridge 1955 model (1200cc) bought in 1969 (OBY104) for £12-10shillings, but following an accident six months later it was written off, a shame as it was a nice comfortable car.

Nice to see my old Westminster featured. I bought this car to tow my racing motorcycles between states in Australia and it was a very good tow car. Later, I had the engine bored to nearly 3 litres and fitted high compression pistons, which made it a very fast car and quite suited to our long distances. My next car was a Jaguar Mark 7, but only kept that a short time before buying a Wolseley 6/90, one of my best loved cars. Although in the years since then I have owned Australian and Korean cars, I still have a real affection for British cars.

Hi, I am 76 years old, I passed my driving test in my fathers Austin A50 Cambridge. The Reg no. was XMA 554. As you say they were very prone to rusting around the rear wheel arches, so badly on our car that when attempting to raise the car with the jack the sill collapsed.

I love these old photos and of course the cars. I have mentioned it before but my Dad Had an A40 only a couple of years old when he got it. We had a roof rack which we got from someone who was off to Canada and a number of other things as I recall. His car was grey with white roof and red interior I seem to remember but I cannot recall the registration number. He had to change the car as the grew by one and we had my Nan (his mother) come to live with us as often happened back then when husbands passed away. A great collection once again Rick thank you for putting it together. 👍👍

Fabulous photos 👍🏻 My mum had an Austin A90 Westminster in black, reg was LMO that’s all I remember, The Austin Champs were great, we had four of them in the family, they could be bought for just a few quid back in the day from R&R Services on Battersea Bridge Road, once at a Banger racing event a car pulling a loaded trailer got stuck in the mud, a Land Rover tried to pull it out and got stuck, our Champ pulled the whole train of Land Rover, car, and trailer carrying race car without any bother.

09:54 - KFB464 looks like a Kenya registration. In the early 60s in Kenya my father had an A55 Countyman, reg starting KHD??? In 1965 it was brought to the UK and registered as DYE518C. At that time the 'age-related' plates showed the year of registration rather than manufacture.

I'm sure my uncle took me for a spin in his baby blue A35 in 1973. It was his first car. It looked ancient even to a 5 year old. He soon graduated to a Capri mk.1 he could handbrake park when it was icy. I learnt to drive on Elsham airfield in my dad's 1981 Mini Clubman estate, too. But I struggled as I was over 6'3! The German sign is something about despatching teaching or learning materials. 😁👍

Great chill out video for a Sunday morning 👍 the London reg A40 at 18:11 also shows a London bomb site in the background showing a break in the row of terrace houses where later 50s / 60s homes built. You say A40s in black were rare, my neighbour Mr James owned a black one with a grey roof circa 1970. I owned an A55 Mk 1 Cambridge in black with Manumatic gears great car, good economy, spacious interior and boot and very comfortable. Unfortunately it was rear ended by an Austin Maxi in 1979, so off to the scrapyard it went sadly. Looking forward to your next video already.😊

Hi. Great viewing theses old pictures of cars . Always bringing a memory to mind. Cars of the 1950s /60s for me such as the Austin Cambridge. Also some of the photos of people in them , dressed in the fashion of the time. I remember in the late 1960s a British family came to NZ and brought their Austin 1300 Countryman. They lived opposite us in the street. We didn't sell the Countryman here in NZ at the time, only the 4 door 1100/1300 models were assembled in a car plant. You will be familiar with the type of car im talking about. I remember the comedy show Fawlty Towers on the TV in the 1970s, and Basil Fawlty actor John Cleese drove a red Austin Countryman in the show. Do you remember that ? Maybe youre not old enough. Thanks from Carl.

A wee bit of nerdy trivia for you.... One of the vehicles shown (time 13:24) was a two-tone Austin Westminster A105 - Reg: BY3787. This photo was taken in New Zealand - and probably in one of the central suburbs of Auckland city. The windscreen sticker (top centre) was the then equivalent of the UK Tax Disc. The stickers licensed a car for road use from the 1st of June of one year to the 31st of May of the next. The sticker showing on the screen of that Austin was for the 1985-86 year, which, coincidentally, was the last year that style of sticker (and the entire NZ fleet being re-licensed at one time) was ever used. The "BY" plate series was issued in several places when the "lifetime" plate / yearly sticker regime came into being in 1966, but the numbers 3701 - 3899 were issued in Newmarket, Auckland. My mother had an Austin A30 with reg: BY3802 and I have seen BY3804 on a Morris Minor 1000 in a collection (sadly now disbanded). Chances are then that the A105 was registered in the "lifetime" series on the same day (or at least the same week) as the two other BMC vehicles mentioned in May 1966. Checking up on the Westminster's reg, I see that it was cancelled in March 1996. Last recorded milage was 65336 at a change of owner in January 1992....although someone has run a full check on its legal status in 2021, so it may indeed still be around being restored for the road.

A bit more "nerdy stuff" as actually BUY1 is now on a new BMW 17 XDrive60 Excellence, registered on 13th March 2024. It was once on a Jaguar that belonged to "Coombs of Guilford" who were a Jaguar dealer. BUY is a Worcestershire registration number originally issued between June and October 1937...........@@oldclassiccarUK

@@richardsealey3626 - I have not personally seen it, but yes, they would have. The closest I have seen to that particular plate was BY110 - coincidentally on another Austin (but not an A110 or I'd DEFINITELY have remembered that!). Just checked the NZTA (local DVLA) website and BY1 has not been registered to any vehicle since prior to when the cut-off for live records was implemented for the online system (Jan 1995). If one applied to the personalised plate division, one could potentially get it re-issued to a vehicle under that system if there is definitely no claim to it. Honestly, at that point, I would be considering a number plate surround that read "GET 1 FREE" (Haha) Likewise, BUY1 has never been issued, although it would have potentially come out in early 2004. Hmmm..... Sounds to me like I should be grabbing those two plates as they would be of potential value to someone, but no - I'll leave it to them to enjoy! @oldclassiccarUK - Yes, I've seen that Jag go around Goodwood a few times and always wondered if it was a vanity plate or a legit road legal one!

Very nice. It is perhaps an idea to mention the current equivalent of, as an example, 60 GBP in 1964. I'm old enough to know the value of the Pound back then, yet to younger viewers it may not be clear that 60 GBP in 1964 had quite a different value of 60 GBP nowadays. And that is not only the case with the Pound...
