Posh & Becks, Taylor Swift and how women are blamed in sports

The Beckham documentary which just released covers a lot, but the thing which intrigued me the most was the way that Posh Spice - Victoria, was treated. Victoria was famous BEFORE David ever came along, she was a member of the biggest girl group (potentially ever) and yet people still thought she wasn't good enough for him, and let her know it, that she was "bad for business". But it's not just Victoria who has been torn apart, Cheryl Cole and Jessica Simpson were also treated awfully in the 2000's, but now we have Taylor Swift and Travis Kelse on the scene - one of the most famous women alive and a sports star. Is this Posh and Becks 2.0? And will she be given the same treatment as Victoria was.

Thank you for this video. I felt the same as you - the first time watching the doc was inspiring, but the second time through made me feel worse about David and much better toward Victoria. She’s still getting hassled to this day on twitter, etc…. He’s a great player but less of a prize personally.

The most awful part is sports fans dismissing the accomplishments of these women. I saw quite a few comments in regards to Taylor being the less relevant/famous/important partner in that relationship and men dismissing that what she's accomplished. I'm not a swiftie but I can respect what she's achived financially and fame wise. Still I saw men trying ro downplay her as if the eras tour wasn't sold out everywhere. It's so dismissive to try and put a player of a sport pretty much only one country cares about above an international pop star that does arena tours and whose music is well known all over the world

That's so gross that people have done that! There's a real dismissal of what's perceived to be "women's work", and all of the women I talked about in this video are popstars, funny how despite that fame and power they all had, they're seen as the "unworthy" ones

Men do this to women a lot. In the black community they like to tell us our degrees and careers mean nothing. If we own property, our a business, and any investments, that also means nothing. So I just do what I please, I do not value the thoughts of men in general

That’s wild. When she walked into the stadium for a game she notably remarked “it’s so quiet!” Which, if you’ve ever been to a major football game, you’d know it’s anything but, it’s just that the fervour and fracas can’t compare to the wild all out frenzy of her stadium shows that _literally registered on the Richter scale._

One of these relationships that I think will have interesting media coverage is Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens. I saw a quote where she said something like "I realized that I didn't have to choose between being a gymnast and being a wife". I doubt it even crossed her husband's mind that he would have to choose between being a husband and being a football player. He's in the NFL, which is the highest level of his sport, but she's the greatest competitor of all time for her sport. It's not even close.

I remember the coverage in the media after David was unfaithful. Victoria was mocked, slagged off, and picked apart. She couldn't do anything right. She went for a skiing trip just after the cheating hit the news. Paparazzi took photos of her smiling, and the reports were all making fun of her for it, pointing out that she "never smiled", and taking the piss out of her for "faking" the smile. It didn't look like a genuine smile, but they were going to be unpleasant about her whatever she did. So she probably felt like putting on a brave face and smiling through the pain was the best choice. The way the woman David had the affair with received the polar opposite treatment. Newspapers would write articles gushing about her, and emphasising how "classy", "beautiful", "fashionable", "exotic", and... Basically how "posh" she was. She did a sit down interview for IIRC Sky News. She was presented as demure, intelligent, and high-class. Newspapers ran headline after headline about the affair in graphic detail. Champagne and strawberries in bed. All details revealed by the "other woman", while David and Victoria stayed quiet. I don't know if she was trying to just make as much money as possible off the back of the situation, especially given that she was working as David's PA at the time of the affair. Maybe she was unsure how she would move forward professionally. Maybe she wanted to launch her career in the public eye. She could been talked into it. But she remained as a public figure for a while. Culminating in her appearance on a reality TV show where celebrities worked on a farm, and she ended up being all over the papers for tossing off a pig (to collect a sperm sample) and it was really jarring compared to the way she'd been presented in the media initially. What's especially wild, is Victoria was really, really popular in the Spice Girls. She was seen as really beautiful. But she ended up being the butt of the joke no matter what after they got married.

Maybe is it because I'm American, or maybe it's because I don't like sports, but I remember little teen me being so confused why the media was making a big deal over how lucky Posh was to marry Beckham. I thought whoever the heck he was was lucky to be marrying a Spice Girl. 🤣 Then when he "allegedly" cheated, I was shocked that he had the audacity. To this day, I still don't get why he was considered the more famous spouse. I sincerely hope what's his name is grateful that Taylor is with him. It's rather difficult to try to pretend that Taylor isn't the more famous one in the relationship (though, apparently there are a few men trying).

Honestly he kinda is the more famous spouse. Football has a lot more traction than the spice girls. I didn't even know about the spice Girls until I stumbled on her videos and I didn't even know she was part of them until the reactions to the documentary came out. But that being said that man has a lot of trauma that he needs to work on. He's also an ass for the way he treated his wife and how he was never there. It's so sad how the accomplishments of famous women fade away after getting married and the way she was treated by the media

I find the "Swifties are colonizing the NFL" discourse particularly rich coming from (presumably) white guys who support a team with a hella racist name. All in all normie relationships and celeb relationships are not comparable. The fact they mutually benefit financially together, and enjoy eachother's company are not mutually exclusive.

This really struck a note with me. I used to date someone (who although was not Becks-level fame), who it was very difficult to be with. He was in a band and his bandmates would get easily frustrated with me and even joke that he would turn up late to practice because of me. This really upset me because I really encouraged his musical talent and I wanted to do everything to support him. He didn't own a watch and was usually late to everything in general, as he preferred to do things at his leisure. I think his bandmates may have had a bit of a problem with him just dating in general.

I totally agree they skirted around the infidelity and tried to vaguely rush past the that portion, while spending a looonnngg time building up the sympathetic “poor lonely David” narrative. His response to the alleged infidelity didn’t feel very sincere and felt a bit sus. Throughout the documentary, it felt like Victoria’s commentary was always brief, surface level, and felt highly edited, almost as the most juicy authentic bits of her answering the interview question had been politely removed. Even when Beckham did something clearly inconsiderate, like miss his son’s birth, it’s all laughed off because with a guy as charming and successful like Beckham anything goes! I loved how you credited Posh for her own independent success and influential role she played in further boosting her husband’s confidence and fame. She is iconic! Personally, I would have enjoyed hearing more of Victoria’s commentary, even though it was supposed to be about David. Also, did the ending episode with the dancing scene and family togetherness almost feel a little forced or performative to anybody else? I used to fangirl over their relationship as a teenager, but as an adult, I see it so differently! I really enjoyed hearing your take on the documentary ☺️

I felt Victoria got cut out sooooo much too, there were some weird cuts they did, like they just wanted certain soundbites but they literally cut her off mid-sentence so often. The ending with that forced family time felt very...forced "happy families". I had gone on a rant about it along with how the kids were used as comic relief but was determined to keep this video to 20 minutes. I'm sure there is a bond there, but their relationship is NOT the fairytale we grew up wanting

I have a lot of issues with the way the docu-series was framed, especially around Victoria. I do find it kind of interesting though because while I totally get your point about his "I don't think I'm very appreciated" statement, I found that part (especially in relation to several other moments throughout the series) that this was sarcasm and playful spousal banter between him and Victoria. He clearly suffers from OCD, which problematically is not explicitly said and just implied. As I was watching this series, it was this statement where I was like "oh boy, this could be construed wrong." I do still believe it's playful banter between him and Victoria, but it's definitely not framed in a way that makes that obvious and instead frames it as her being the bad guy. Along with the other moments that frame her as the bad guy, it's another iteration of women = bad. I wish they had been more explicit about his OCD and about the mental health problems. It came out more in the last episode but they could have done a better job of it so that it wouldn't be so easy for the average viewer to just say it was Victoria's fault for anything and everything.

Perfect example is the quarterback’s wife has been notoriously hated the same way Taylor has but I feel it’s worse bc Britney Mahomes doesn’t come from fame and is only famous for being hated. The only plausible reason for all of the hate is ppl’s unchecked jealousy.

Australia has this thing called AFL which is HUGE. everyone has some kind of sport (I do not...I am sports adverse...no shade on anyone who loves sport) so we have the beautiful girlfriends and wives of the footballers who oh my goooooodness....Australia is such a strange mix of American and English. Don't come for me im not sure about famous women in their own right dating high prolife sportsman but we have a fun misogny from both cultures mixed in one. There is straight up violence against women in the open with some of these groups. I'm sure some of these young and older men are lovely...but the mix of injuries affecting your brain and just the culture these men are brought into from the start its a terrifying space for women to be in. I know I'm old and jaded but I side eye all of them. I'm sure there's lovely individuals in there that just lives their lives but in like 'just....I'm watching you all. Watch yourselves.' I'm very cynical about all of it.

Thank you for the video but have to disagree with the bit about moving clubs. Transfers can get very messy and even a superstar like Beckham can have limited options and/or be short on time. It sucks and is totally unfair to the family but moving to a rival English club would have made all the harassment ten times worse. Also as a Ukrainian I can't not mention Andriy Shevchenko who moved from an Italian club to an English one because his American wife wanted to live in an English speaking country. He was also often criticized for that since his performance declined in the new environment. Can't not respect him for making that choice. The guy did put his partner above his sporting career.

Not saying that justifies it..but that *is* the giant elephant in the room here. The amount of money people are betting on these events is astronomical.

Heard a kind, smart, progressive guy say recently he can’t enjoy sports anymore if he doesn’t have a bet on the game. It takes away from the excitement and stakes he’s become addicted to.

I've never heard of Taylor's boyfriend. Is he famous internationally like she is?

Nope not really. He is an American footballer so the only people who really cares about him are Americans.

Ok I've been waiting for this video to see what you have to say about the Taylor Swift thing. And I have to say that as an NFL fan, I wish people would see that while the franchise is making a lot of money due to this, it's all because the Swifties are jumping the bandwagon. Tickets are being bought, not for the game, but for someone in the crowd. It feels disrespectful to the players that are giving their all in the game. Additionally, during the games she attends, she is shown so many times during the game. After a good play, we are shown her reaction. We are tired of her being the star of all the games. It's a football game. Us fans want to see the players and not one of their girlfriends all the time

Taylor Swift is a female icon. So, you can't assume that criticism of her is going to be addressed with nuance and understanding-rather than vitriol and bias.

Sounds like it's way more on the production crew than on her. I'm sure Taylor herself would prefer to be ignored.

But what if Taylor or (insert super famous female celebrity here) *also* wants to “see the players?” Yes, one of them happens to be her boyfriend, but if she wasn’t super famous, she’d just be another fan, and based on the photos of her there, she seemed super enthusiastic. But the very issue she deals with as a megastar is that she’s unable to do anything, and she literally talked about having to negotiate with herself whether she’s willing to be photographed. She *knows* she’s the “monster on the hill,” to quote one of her songs. But does that mean she shouldn’t get to live her life and date a guy who happens to be football player, including all the activities that come with that? Not to mention Swifties contain multitudes. There absolutely are people who like both Taylor Swift and football. I also like how that colored the direction of the recent SNL skit. While it was meant to comment on the NFL marketing of their relationship, I also liked how all of the participants were men, and also felt authentic to the banter among Swifties overall.

@@mart1390 but it also ignores the greater point that is being made, that male sports stars’ partners get a lot of hate for ridiculous reasons. From the reasons pointed out in the video to what I’ve recently discovered about the way fans talk about Brittany Mahomes, it does seem to have an air of misogyny to it, making it hard on “WAGS” generally. Heck, why does the term “WAG” even exist? Is there an equivalent for the partners of women’s sports stars?

@courtmontana that is true. The Brittany Mahomes thing is ridiculous since everyone claims she's a gold digger when she knew him before the fame. Taylor or any partner does not deserve hate. The Swifties buying gear and tickets just because of her though does feel a bit ridiculous.
