You can build wood decking that is raised 6 inches or so above the ground for the chickens to run under.. build various ones around the gardens where the chickens roam. It will give them cover from hawks and dogs. Make them into viewing stations to put a couple of chairs on to sit and have wine and gaze over your grounds in the evening. Make them large enough that their little trails can't be grabbed by a dog reaching under.

a goose won't stop dogs. Much as I hate seeing it our village neighbours keep a small yappy dog, usually on a chain, to protect their chickens and it works, we have jackals among other predators. We use electric netting. But a LGD would definitely work.

What a heartbreaking experience for you they were such beautiful chickens. You may not be able to consider this, my family has a Marrema dog they will bond with and protect all the animals on your property , at first patrolling the boundaries and barking a warning and will attack wolves and wild dogs heroically, they are breed to live outdoors. They have a lovely nature soft and patient with children and will not stray beyond your land. I know you will be brave , the love of your family and time can help heal the pain. Your new little flock are lovely 🐓😢❤️

People who think chickens don't have personalities don't know chickens! So sorry for your loss! Some of the memories of them are priceless! Put electric fence around your free range area if you can that comes on in the evening or at night. Dogs hate them! A livestock guard dog is another choice also. We have lost none to predators since we got ours, and the electric fence keeps them home and other dogs out. We have about 65 chickens! Love them all! But as you well know, some are very extra special too!

Just a thought, maybe get a farmyard dog, also fun and might dissuade other dogs to have a go at your other animals. Big hugs! Also curious about the plans John has for the addition. A home in the countryside is so close to nature and, so often full of animals ... domestic and wild. They become part of our family and touch our souls ... Your 'brood' of living beings is so integrating and 'ticks along nicely' .... It's so obvious to us outside looking in (lovingly, I might add) how you all, with your neighbours and friends, swing together .... to help, support, work, and care for each other. So grieve for your chicks, precious parts of your band, and love your new additions as you can so wonderfully do .....

I had a magnolia tree that wanted to be a shrub. But, I kept the strongest and straightest stick coming up and cut all the others close to the soil. I had to keep doing it every year, but I had a lovely, straight tree that bloomed creamy blossoms in the spring and produced red berries in the autumn. The blooms remained for a couple of weeks.

So very sorry for your loss……… 😥🧡 Aaaaawwwww, just got to the part where you welcomed new girlies and gorgeous boy to your family 🥰 Hazel was my sweetest girl, a Barred Plymouth Rock chicken. She used to sit on my shovel, looking for grubs to eat as I was digging for them in my little garden 🥰🐓. She, along with her two sisters, would come into our house every day, just to walk around our dining table, and then back out the back door, into our garden. We would often find them sitting on our patio furniture too. I still miss them, 10 years later………. This video really got to me….. I miss my Hazel, and we also will be losing our sweet 14 year old Izzie, a sweet doggie we adopted from a shelter when she was just a 10 week old pup. She’s suffering from dementia, she’s going deaf, and getting more confused every day 😥🧡

I love that post-war looking concrete fence structure! That would be sweet in my Space! I love growing invasive vines and such that most folks avoid, as this is the Desert SW, such things are never far from failure without water, and most will not regenerate themselves as we get a second Spring in the Fall before winter, knocking them out as they sprout. So many different micro-climates! I am reminded that this is the beginning of the newest "El Nino" Event, and so my yarden might get a bit more rain, and a lot less pain of being in the Dry Heat. Last year, the summer begin in the 100's F, and lasted throughout the Summer; I notice many Ash Trees across the city that are not opening this year, just a skeleton of what was. I am not sure what El Nino means to your region of the World, but it is a Natural Phenomena of our Weather patterns...stay Safe, I really felt a part of all of this video. Thank you again!

Hello Newby family. I’m so sorry to hear about the rooster & the chickens. Very sad…… I can understand the pain in your heart…. It’s only human as we do get attached to our animals. Love, love love all that you do on the property. Such hard work…. The end result will give you such satisfaction. The old olive trees will be magnificent. New flowers everywhere & veggies galore. The boys are real troopers helping John remove the old concrete…. Lovely to watch. I never want the videos to end…. I can hardly wait for the next Sunday to come around….. all the jobs are so inspiring….. our Autumn is just starting here in Australia & on the 1st of June winter sets in for 3 months. …… life goes on. Stay well & happy Newby family. Love & hugs to you all. Cheers Noeline from Australia. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🌈🌈🌈🇦🇺🇦🇺🍀🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

So sad and sorry you lost your feathered family by someone else’s unruly dogs. I was in tears listening to you telling us what happened. We do need to grieve for our family pets they become so much a part of our lives. So glad you got new ones to love and attached to them you will get no matter how hard you may try not to! You love animals so it’s a given you will and soon they will be following you around! 🩷 and hugs.

Idealy, there could be an outer perimeter and an inner perimeter. Cattle fencing )or its equivalent with chicken wire over that & nailed to big posts every yard or so would be sturdier.

I get angry about the wandering dogs spose we now view that dogs should be contained/supervised and not let to wander as they please like they were years ago which was expected whether your in suburbia or country life... it is devastating when our luved fur/feather babies are taken from us in such a brutal way.... not meaning to increase your pain but I feel for you all.... now we all welcome to the new additions to the Newbys flock with fingers, toes, arms & legs crossed for their safety.... enjoy their gentleness..... cheers Debz from Oz

So feeling for you all! Sadly it is part of farm life, as much as you try to protect your feathers friends .. Tara, you and John had done your best when you built the enclosure fencing, & fitted the electronic door to the coop as further protection. We’ve got two dogs who don’t chase animals, Molly is a border collie & watches over our hens, & Bunso our kelpie Koolie x thinks he’s helping at times by collecting eggs .. he just think he’s helping because he sees us collecting them The hens are part of our lives, as much as our dogs … it would be heartbreaking if we lost any, as much as we know they don’t live as long as ourselves, & at times have great threats than ourselves .. like feral animals We love your new flock of poultry, & their names are perfect for them! Guinea fowls are so beautiful, & yes do have a wonderful sound. You are doing your absolute best, & put so much thought into everything you do … din’t let the nay sayers wear you down, sadly social media is full of them … keep shining you light 🤗❤️

Oh dear, FiFi was such a handsome and special roo! I am so sorry for the loss of him and his flock. I'm glad Budsa survived and that you are getting more chickens for the farm. As for tilling for weed control, it can take awhile to transition to no-till. We have found arborists/tree removal companies who are looking for a place to dump wood chips and have been successful in getting a load dumped once or twice a year in order to use the wood chips to mulch the paths between the rows. They then break down and add goodness to the garden soil. We also use under and around fruit trees and berry bushes and to border the gardens. It is a lot of work for a large garden such as yours, and sometimes tilling is the best answer. Initially we lay large pieces of cardboard under the mulch to smother the grasses/weeds. Etc, etc. Love to you all and your new feathered friends!
