Portland and Western's Toledo Branch Part 2

(Originally released in 2020)
Portland and Western’s Toledo Branch weaves through America’s premier timber producing lands in western Oregon. This backwoods railroad serves a Georgia Pacific paper mill in the small town of Toledo. Five days a week, trains make the seventy-five mile journey over the branch line between its namesake town and Albany in the lush Willamette Valley.
Part 2 of this series will focus on the east end of this former Southern Pacific branch line with an insightful combination of historic images and modern-day operations. We begin at the remote community of Summit and follow the weaving course of the Mary’s River down the east side of the heavily forested Coast Range. Aerial photography provides an amazing perspective of the more isolated portions of the branch.
EMD GP39-2’s and GP40P slug sets power trains of containerboard, wood chips, and lumber through the rugged coastal mountains. The railroad crosses numerous secluded trestles and passes graveyards of old mills with a history as rich as the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. Leaving the woods, the line traverses busy city streets and races through open farm land before meeting the Willamette River and the Union Pacific main line at Albany.

Drone footage is a great addition! Beautiful country!
Those old Blood Nose SP liveries will always be my favourite!
Aaron I've absolutely loved watching this series! I especially like the fact that you took the time to research (including pictures) and narrate the history of this line.
Thank you 7idea. Our family has really grown fond of your videos as our 3 year old as dubbed trains his most favorite thing in the world.
Beautiful documentary 👍🏼💯
Always a good day when 7idea drops a video 👍

Thank you!
Hopefully the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill Doesn't Close Down Awesome Footage of the Portland & Western Toledo Branch in Oregon Keep the Videos Coming 7idea Productions 💯💯💯💯❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥💯💯❤️🔥❤️🔥
Outstandig documentary in two parts! In the first part, the passage of the train through the forest is beautiful; It's amazing how those wooden bridges still resist the passage of years and the transit of trains...
The research and the videography to make this vid is very well done and appreciated.
As always, a great video with great history and information. You really stand out by narrating all aspects of the railroad you're filming from town history, history of the RR and any unique info on locomotives, and taking a moment to showcase an industry that works with the railroad (in this case, logging) was unique and I encourage more of that. I find films on shorelines and regionals so interesting and a nice change of pace from the typical focus on the class 1's. Will you be considering the WLE for future films?
Yes, so looking forward to watching this (probably many times) on my living room big screen. Bookmarked/saved!
Thank you very much!
The NWP pulled out of western Marin and Sonoma County (north of SF) in the 1930's. Having hiked some of the more obscure portions of the former ROW, I imagine this is how the trains would run if the lines were still active.
Super cool!
Great video today 👍
There are probably other poorly maintained tracks in this country, but I’m glad hazardous materials aren’t being transported on the Toledo branch. It’s probably a challenge for this outfit to turn a decent profit.
Nice look back, Aaron! 1:17:15 - Pleased to see some guy I know in the engineer's seat, which I know is one of his favorite spots.
Colonel Hogg wanted the line to go over Santiam Pass? As in the same route US 20 now uses? Having been over that section of highway, that would have been quite the rail line, probably with big winding curves, lots of tunnels, possibly even switchbacks. Plus before you even get there, you stll need to cross the rugged, craggy Western Cascades.
Good 👍
You can tell this is a Genessee and Wyoming owned railroad. Their engines are identical to the G&W owned railroad that goes through where I live--Arizona Eastern

That's a cool operation. I visited the Clifton Branch and the FMI up to the Morenci Mine in April.

@7ideaproductions I live on the Globe branch in Safford but the Clifford branch isn't far away. When SP owned it back in the day we used to put pennies on the track for the train to flatten it. Those tracks went right through my Grandma and Grandpa's property near Duncan
FYI, The ie in Clatskanie is pronounced eye, not ee. I live next to P&W's Portland to Wauna line which would be cool if you did a documentary on it.
Go Banana Slug go!!
Interesting!!!! That GP40 #3004 sure has traveled some miles!! We had it and a brother, the 3001 on the St. Lawrence & Atlantic RR that runs between Norton VT and Portland Maine. Always wondered where it ended up. Think they both were ex B&O units originally. Small world!!

Wow that's cool. I used to live on the st Lawrence in clayton NY
I wonder what the locomotive slugs are for extra HP?

A slug is the traction motors without an engine. The locomotive has more than enough power to run it's own motors plus the ones on the slug.

The Orange Express is rolling!
Can you do more of Big Boy 4014 please I love when you talk about it
Aaron, between North Plains and Cornelius Pass Road, there's an enormous wood trestle you gotta get a shot of. Its around 3+ stories high, and a quarter mile long. Holcolmb Creek Trestle, 45.596930, -122.897457. There's also on the same line, a cool tunnel underneath Cornelius Pass road that goes to US30.
Wow you are right they didn't waste no time getting up to track speed their high telling it out of there like they stole something
I don't think those wood chips cars will be scrapped anytime soon. They are owned by the new owner of Scenica Saw Mills.
Man some of those geeps look rough, hopefully they’ve been repainted since.

For living in that area for most of my life it's embarrassing how so much of p and w track is so bad. I see a derailment someday soon. Put some money into that train system of track. Ugh
