Portal's Rarest Dialogue | Camera Shy

Ойындар

In Portal, there is supposed to be special dialogue when completing the Camera Shy achievement...except this special dialogue almost never plays. Because of this, very few players know about its existence. Let's look into why this dialogue has become one of Portal's most hidden secrets.

It just makes me love these games so much more that so much effort was put into them.

    This makes sense. You don't want her to interrupt herself, but you also don't want her to skip any camera lines. So they really needed to check the achievement counter and skip the dialogue counter ahead when it's 33.

    I'm not trying to patronize you or be rude I just like thinking about this stuff, also, take what I say with a grain of salt as I'm not a valve employee and I'm an amateur programmer at best. There are better simpler implementations that don't require a connection to the steam service or reference to another part of the code, eg, simply keeping track of the times the player portals a camera off the wall independently of the dialogue playing or not; eliminating the need for a "Dialogue" counter in the first place. Safeguards around if the player dies might need to be considered depending on how the aforementioned code was implemented, eg not adding to the count if the player dies 15 times on a level and shoots the camera off the wall every one of those 15 times or 15 times without shooting it and only shooting it on the 16th time, but I digress.

    I think the reason the achievement counter and the voiceline counter are separated by the "is glados talking" check, is to keep track of the achievement while also making sure that the player hears all 4 of the camera detachment voicelines. If both counters went up or if was just a single counter keeping track then everytime glados was already talking and a camera got detached, the corresponding voiceline would be skipped. A simple fix would be to have a check for the achievement counter before selecting a voiceline. Something like If(achieve.count = 33 OR voice.count = 33) { play special voiceline} Though everything seems obvious in hindsight

    It may be that the game can send events to the achievement system, but can't read from it. In which case, it would have to have a third variable 😕. Probably worth, but still - unfortunate

  • @managar5569

    @managar5569

    Wouldnt you only need to check if achieve.count == 33? Since it counts the number of times the camera has been shot down and the voiceline counter, as mentioned in the video, almost never is equal to 33

    @@Fishman2028 It's highly unlikely, imo, that they can't read the memory related to achievements, as iirc the game has an in-game achievement tracker as well. • @vict632

    @vict632

    9 ай бұрын

    @@managar5569 Yeah, maybe its just comparing to the wrong variable and that's all that would need to change. I used both in my example but as you point out the other counter would very likely never reach 33. Perhaps it was only meant to keep track of the first few instances and any checks beyond that should reference the achievement variable instead 🤔

  • @skillfulfighter23

    @skillfulfighter23

    The achievement counter is actually through steam. The game itself has no access to it. Steam listens for events and increments its own counter. This is why the game needs to keep track of it to do logic. This is nothing more than a simple bug with a simple fix. Just have a third counter that tracks which voice line was last played. It was just overlooked by the devs since the achievement worked as expected and nothing else depends on the number of destroyed cameras

It's a bug caused by a very obvious flaw in logic, but the effect is that a cosmetic feature rarely triggers (meaning most people won't even know it exists just by playing the game) with no effect on gameplay. I wonder if someone could mod portal to fix this bug (probably by adding a separate check to override the dialogue counter if the achievement counter is 33)

    I actually went to test this out to see if I would get it at like 1:45 of the video before I saw what was required for it and accidentally got it because I knew the voice lines of detaching the camera does not play if glados is already speaking and I wanted to hear all of the detachment voice lines. I thought I hit an ultra rare easter egg or something but then I watched the rest of the video and it was just weird code lol
