I think Black Mesa didn't want to lose funding, so they tried to copy Aperture in their portal technology. Instead of making the same type of portals Aperture had, Black Mesa discovered the borderworld Xen on accident.

Kinda true, since that is apparent in an easter egg of Aperture Science Presentation in Portal 1. We can see that Black Mesa had equal funding compared to Aperture. Difference being, Black Mesa is more realistic on their budgeting while Aperture is straight up egotistically overbudgeting their proposal to actually travel within the same dimension without using Xen. Resulting in Aperture only got a fraction of their proposed budget.

that's a very interesting theory, but i've always imagined black mesa's first discovery of xen like; a warp drive satellite-teleporter built by bm was sent lightyears deep ahead from the solar system, landed on a planet and that was when bm began expeditions there

@@thecoolmf5297 you've imagined wrong. Xen is not in our dimension. It's a borderworld. Black Mesa portals go into and back out of it. Combine portals cut straight through it like a highway. Kleiner and Eli's portal in Half Life 2 sling past and back around it, as Alyx explains in Black Mesa East.

The Displacer Cannon from Opposing Force may bear a resemblance to the Portal gun. If you remember, Shephard used it to jump between Xen and Black Mesa.

....Black Mesa stole fr- Wait!!! It makes perfect sense! Remember the Displacer Cannon?! That experimental portal gun that Black Mesa was working on? When you fired it it shot a green beam creating a rift in time and space (or something like that) that would suck in enemies (or friends alike) into the portal almost instantly killing them. What if Black Mesa tried to replicate the portals that the Portal Gun used? Perhaps not canon, but it's a thought.

Black Mesa and Aperture Science were working on two different forms of teleportation: the former focussed on literally beaming things from one specific point to another, using Xen as a sort of shortcut which individuals are tunnelled through; the latter focussed on quite literally tearing wormholes in the fabric of space.

Counter-Strike: Source did, too, but it doesn't take place in the same universe. I think they just realized it's a good opportunity to expand the lore of Aperture Science, which appeared in HL2 Epsiode 2. Portal 1 was released on the same day as HL2 EP2.

No. Alot of Valve's games uses Half-Life's assets, yet most of them are not within the same universe as Half-Life itself. Examples: Day Of Defeat and Day Of Defeat Source, Counter-Strike 1.6 Counter Strike Source and CSGO, Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2, and more. Theres also no confirmation of what you said, I have searched.

Honestly Aperture would have faired better if they begged Mann Co for support. Saxton and his team would have thrown money at cave merely to develop weapons that had slightly less malfunctions or production screw ups. Aka the double force of nature that was 2 stuck together with the same barrel.

At the beginning of the game, the announcer says "You have been in suspension for 50 days", implying that this takes place 50 days after Portal 1. However, after going to sleep and waking up again, he says "You have been in suspension for 9999999-" and then gets cut off. If you count just the amount of 9's he mentions, and you convert those days into years, that's at least 27,300 years, and it's implied that he was gonna mention more "9's" before getting cut off. He also mentions: "Well done! The Enrichment Center reminds you that although circumstances may appear bleak, you are not alone. All Aperture Science personality constructs will remain functional in apocalyptic, low power environments of as few as 1.1 volts." 1.1 volts is a very low amount of power, and if the facility can somehow efficiently run on this low of a power source, then 27,300+ years is completely possible. Keep in mind this is a game that's focused on travelling through wormholes that in reality would require almost infinite energy to exist (and pretty much impossible to exist from a tiny portable gun), so I don't think you should take it all too seriously. There's a lot of evidence pointing at this game taking place tens of thousands of years in the future like @Odohui mentioned. I think the announcer saying "9999999-" is big enough proof on its own.

@1001magictricks they are competiting companies, which just were working on portal technology at the same time. the difference is, aperture science portals are wormoles linking two nearby places and they appear as holes in walls. portals you saw in black mesa were more like orbs that were capable of linking entire different dimensions. portals developed in black mesa appear to consume much more energy than aperture science portals. i don't believe BM stole anything from AS.

The technology was apparently perfected by Glados only after it/she had killed everyone in the lab. The scientists were working on it but it never materialized into the portable gun until Glados did it.

​@@MoonOvIce Cave Johnson acknowledged moon rocks to be a really good conductor for portals in one of his audio logs, which sounds to me like they did have some working prototypes long before Glados existed - long before his moon rock poisoning really started to kick in and sparked the idea of turning human conscience into computer data, which would eventually be developed into Glados under Carolyn's time as the boss of the company it's been 10 years since i played anything portal related, memory is hazy, and i guess new games are out too, so correct me if i'm wrong

@@fern4753 actually, could be very little. The combine were in power during Portal. There were still plants at aperture. The combine are gone during Portal 2, as GLaDOS seems perfectly fine letting Chell leave despite thinking the facility was safer in the first game. However, it took no time for Gordon to end the combine's reign on earth (no surprise considering the 7 hour War.) Therefore, it could have been just a week after the combine were defeated.

One theory I have as to why there are plants during portal at such a famous place is that the combine wanted to demoralize the resistance and Black Mesa with the abandoned facility of their peer/rival.

L4D is linked to them in somewhat rare situation since Ellis mentions shotguns feel like shooting on half life and counter strike, so l4d could be a simulation or the actual real life (we live in) since both portal, half life and counter strike, are games that Ellis can play, so they couldn't be in the same universe, but at the same time they could be connected.

Let's see Aperture is a science facility Black Mesa is also a science facility Of course both look like science facilities. Also at this point in time Aperture has been abandoned for who knows how long, so it is kiiinda broken

@@gustavgnoettgen oh so basically the enrichment centre is the test chambers. If you ever play Portal, there are moments where you break out of the test chambers, and that's the actual science facility, which doesn't look like a school.
