Recently saw another "make a portable workbench" video and as always, I'm trying to figure out if I can pull this off with just a circular saw and a couple other tools. Seems like there's a lot of relying on that table saw for squaring off pieces and such.

I love this! My workshop is the back patio, and it takes about 20 minutes to set up, and 20 minutes to tear down (16 minutes if it's starting to rain!) This would really cut down on that set up time, since all I'd have to do is clamp it onto a folding workstand. It's better than anything I currently have, so yeah, I gotta make me one of these! Thanks! God bless!

I use one or two Kreg Mobile Project Centers for my workbench. They are great, but they are not optimal for some types of clamping, hand planing, routing, or sanding. This adds functionality of a workbench to the Kreg Mobile Project Center at a reasonable cost. It is a definite build for me. Additionally, the size of the "Mini Workbench" can be lengthened or shortened to your needs. I will lengthen mine a bit to be equal to two Project Centers side by side.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought ... "this looks ridiculous ... it must be great!" I also noticed that you're laminating the two boards facing away from eachother, which is the right way to laminate (facing away or towards eachother, but not in the 'same direction'). The fact that you used 2x8 instead of 2x10 just means the design is flexible and allows you to build it without having "exactly what's recommended". ... I just love your channel. You keep things simple and easy, while making great videos. May our Lord Jesus Christ bless you and your family abundantly! =)

I felt like you singled me out when you said "apartments"!!😂😂😂 YES!!! Dwelling in an apartment building definitely has limitations as to what you can do wood working wise. For now, instead of stopping altogether and not being productive. I have more or less made a "lateral" move. What I mean by that is, I've have been make walking sticks, hiking sticks, and canes. Some of the canes I'll am in the process of making, I'm going to donate to a Wounded Warrior program of some sort... I'm going to make some other smaller wood projects until I can find a sufficient area for a work shop....

I recently watched a video on building 'folding sawhorses' on another channel. That video took the best features from 3 different sawhorses and combined them into one (it's the sawhorses that use ropes for tightening - though I'd probably prefer a different approach myself). This workbench would probably be a great fit for one of those sawhorses, it would make a space-saving versatile workbench/sawhorse multitool; great for any jobsite or small shop. And if you're fan of bench-dogs (like I am), you could easily add dog holes. As wood-prices are very high at this point in time, I think I'll be likely to build a combination.

This looks A LOT like the Work Horse top (which Mike also helped design with Jay Bates). I built the Jay Bates design, and this is basically that, but without legs. In short, I LIKE IT A WHOLE LOT. There are some pieces here that give it some more extensibility than I'd previously considered.

@@731Woodworks It's still my favorite "workbench" design. Heavy enough to use for power and hand tools, and light enough (once disassembled) to bring to craft shows. Extensible enough - as your video proves - to do anything I need. And I like the fact that I can make new legs of varying heights. So I can have a hand tool bench, a power tool bench, a lathe bench, and a roman-style low workbench ALL without making a new top.

That is a cool project! I've added it to my build list! That Southern Yellow Pine is beautiful and tough. Unfortunately, it isn't available up here in NY. We have Doug Fir at our Home Depot. Doug Fir is a lot less dense and usually has quite a few knots. It will also crack and split under pressure. If you go to a wood supplier, not a big box store, you may be able to get Southern Yellow Pine, but if you can't they will have many other types of wood. Consider maple as it is reasonably priced, very tough, and used for workbenches. That is what I will use when I build mine!

I changed my mind. While maple would be strong, it would also be expensive and very heavy. Doug Fir is cheap in. comparison, and if it gets damaged, I can make a replacement part cheaply. The only thing I wonder about is whether the slots will hold up since Doug Fir is a soft wood. Not a lot to lose though with cheap lumber. I wish we could get Southern Yellow Pine up here. It has a Janka number of 870 compared to 710 for Doug Fir.

I built mine from Douglas Fir and the slots do not hold up. Every time I try to mallet the wedge in, the cam block rips out of the slot.

@@BillNeubauer I guess Doug Fir is out then. I will wait until I get some 8 quarter maple, though that will make it quite a lot more costly. That is the problem with a lot of these builds. When you add up the costs, they become pretty expensive.

I think it is. May be a good test to do! I use it on my cross cut sled and jointing jig and they are both plywood. No issues so far. Thing is, to hold something flat against the surface, doesn't require a lot of clamping pressure so you're not tightening the clamps a lot.

The WOOD is less than $20 but the rest of the hardware is north of $100. And you need the rest of the hardware to make this work. That, my friend, is misleading. Clickbait if you will. I love your channel, your style and approach. However don't get caught up in the social media make as much money as possible in the shortest period of time game. I know you quit your regular work and I don't blame you one bit. But beware of the marketing games the people that you use as media advisors want you to play. Keep the marketing hype down to a mild roar please. And no more advertised $20 builds that really cost over a $100. Please stay safe, have a great rest of the week, and I wish you all the best!!

Well put, Grumpy. I added up the cost of all of the lumber, clamps, bits, cams and the other things that he used and I believe that the cost would be creeping close to $200.00 to build this. Of course, some wood workers will have the dovetail bit and dovetail clamps and maybe some of the other items used. I was just checking to see what it would cost me to build this project.

I understand what you’re saying. #1 there are no advertisers on this video. Mike and I collaborated on this project. But he didn’t pay me for it. I do make a commission on some sales if people buy through the links. #2 the title says “$20 in wood” I’ll revise the thumbnail to remove under 20 so it's not misleading. It literally did cost me Less than $20 to build because I had previously purchased the Matchfit stuff for my jointing jig. I appreciate the feedback. Thank you

Where I live, I can get Festool or Bessey clamps similar to those clamps, which are around $20 each. That should make it more affordable. I didn't pay attention to the price of the cam clamps, but I do think you can stay below $100 if you look around.
