Was doing some reading and it's used on the m60 tank to clear the fumes .I live in Australia so a dive compressor is a must have as not many dive shops .just been binge watching your channel thanks so much for your advice and easily explained videos

Love my Bauer Junior II compressor, never thought I get one to be honest. I don't haul mine around but use it to fill my own tanks at home. Only disadvantage is noisy as shit LOL however, the convince and time save from trucking my tanks to and fro to my LDS by far outweighs the temporary noise. I also got a hell of a discount on mine purchasing it from a private seller bing the second owner of the unit. If you can afford a Bauer get one, amazing German technology and they have the track record proving their technology. Bauer also backs spare parts for there unit likely longer than anyone else in the market place! Bauer is trusted by SCUBA, FIRE STATIONS, and industry world wide!

A large compressor like this requires a lot of air circulation. It needs at least 18" clear on all sides and 36" minimum above. It really needs to be outside. Alec

Helo Alec. I have been noticing Lots of DIY Mini Scuba Tank Fills, Hookah units on KZread. Most of them from the last couple of years. Just waiting to see how many Injuries are caused but them. Breathing Gas here in the US is Grade E. I have a Nomad unit I use to fill my Spare Air 6cf. I am also using additional Filters. Including Charcoal. I can get it Legally filled with my PADI OW Card. It takes longer to drive to the shop than to fill it.

Excellent video as always. Mike Nelson used compressors with Briggs and Stratton gas engines. One point on gas engines as opposed to electric motors is it takes roughly twice the HP for a gasoline engine to continuously do the same work

Could it make more sense to just carry HP banks and skip the compressor all together? In my area, the gas supply store is focused on welding. I just called and they didn't know what 32 Nitrox was. Can you share the rough cost of those 400CuFt tanks? Are there shorter HP banks? How easy is it to get them filled and that cost? My goal is to have a cheap, safe and reliable system to fill my SCUBA tanks on-the-go. I really only need for me and friends for an extended dive weekend, no commercial application. I would love to avoid the noise of a mobile compressor and banks may be cheaper upfront investment. Thanks!

A compressor is needed to fill your tanks or banks of HP tanks. You saw in the video compressors from personal to scuba club filling and the price can be high if going beyond the basics. There are many considerations in picking the system you want that I won't offer specifics. Instead visit your local dive store (who know what EAN 32 is), and ask to see their setup and who the vendor was that installed it. Get an idea of the ongoing maintenance costs and certification testing as it will be a long term investment (like a boat or wife). Hope this helps Isaac.

We love Bauer 100 Poseidon edition with Subaru drive motor in hard russian conditions. If after 8 years of work I wish to replace it - I would buy the same.

Another great video Alec. I have one of these portable gas compressors and they do work great but you must give them a break and keep them cool to avoid producing CO by overheating the pistons. A portable oxygen/CO detector should be mandatory for anyone considering making their own air. Are the inline CO monitors mandatory at dive shops?

I don't know if you get tired of my Navy stories, but I worked in the engine room when we were underway. It was a steam turbine propulsion system and the turbines ran off of steam and were lubricated with oil. As a result of moisture coming in contact with oil, the two would mix. We would run the oil through a centrifuge that would separate the oil and water. It worked very well. I don't recall an "oil change" ever being done. When not at sea, I worked in a different department, so I can't be certain it was "never" done. I wonder if a small centrifuge would be worth his while, or maybe somewhere they provide that service.

Please keep the stories coming. I was not in the navy but spent most of my life underwater. This compressor has a water separator and lots of features that make it an excellent portable filling station for our Sea Hunt Forever events. Keep on sharing Danny.

There are many cheap compressors available that appear to be for filling scuba tanks. Sometimes they are sold for that purpose. They are really made to fill airgun tanks which are very small capacity (1 cubic foot versus 80 cf). If you are prepared to wait a long time for a fill, and are POSITIVE that the air is breathing quality, they will work for scuba. Keep in mind that these small compressors are NOT commercial quality and will not last long if used for long periods on a regular basis. Alec

You can purchase air quality test kits. They are not too expensive. Generally today, unlike in Mike Nelson's time, air quality is not a big issue. Just look on the wall at the fill station. It ought to be there. Alec

OK. Sometimes my mind speeds on ahead of my mouth. If the compressor produces 8cfm (cubic feet per minute) it clearly takes 10 minutes to fill an 80 cubic foot tank. Thanks. Alec

If you watched this video you can appreciate how many little items around setup, testing and customization there are to a good/safe filling system. Best advise is to find a forum or site of compressor owners (or www.scubaboard.com), who can guide and answer all your questions. Good luck.

There are some 7.5kw scuba compressors from China for $3-5k. If they put an EV charging cable on them you could run them off any ev charging station and fill a tank in 5-8 minutes. Many EV charging stations are free so you could theoretically come out ahead in less than 1000 fills. I'd really like someone to try this and see if they're actually reliable.

It won't be me. EV charging stations are not free, Tesla for sure, and something from China filling my tanks, i'd want certification and references it really works. I'm cautious, not stupid about new and "cheap" solutions. Didn't get this old by cutting costs. A

Five stages compressors are very common now for the 6000psi and 7000psi compressors nowadays. Four stages (Double action first stage ) are usually used for volume instead of pressure.

If you are referring to the mini compressors for air guns/scuba, note carefully that they have many issues that are not so serious for airguns but potentially deadly or at least detrimental for scuba: 1. most are not for continuous duty but must run for less than 1 hour and then rest for 2 hours. 2. many are water cooled so you must have a water source and waste drain available at all times. 3. their filters will NOT render their safe for scuba. They need additional filters. 4. their rate of discharge is generally around 1 to 1.5 cubic feet per minute. It would take an hour to fill 1 tank (see point 1 above). 5. many require 240 volts to power them So, while they might do the job for 1 diver, they'd not be much good for a group. Just be very careful to check them out before buying and be ready for disappointment. Good luck. Alec

I've thought of that often but I've not experimented to see if it's a big factor. Clearly one should keep any strong magnet away from a compass if one hopes for accuracy. Usually the part of a magnetic clip that attaches to the hose, close to the compass, is the metal but non-magnetic part. In use, the compass head would be detached and held away from the magnet. In truth, I have not used a compass much while diving. And I think that's the case for most divers. Probably just as well since compasses underwater are notoriously hard to use accurately and few divers are really adept in their application anyway. Time for a story?? I was a scout leader and to teach my younger scouts how to use a compass really well, I pushed a wooden match into the grass in a golf course with just the head and 1" of stick showing. Using a compass with coordinates that I gave them, the scouts had to find that match. With practice it was quite possible and gave them great satisfaction. Underwater you are lucky to find the shoreline!!! Take care. Alec

The 3.5 is the smallest, lightest affordable compressor that will do a decent job of filling a scuba tank that's available today. I'd say yes. Just search MaxAir35. Alec

Hey Alec, would SCUBA tank have to be put in water too as seen at local dive shop when filling it. Also, this takes away from a diver getting an annual visual inspection on tank if used all the time

I see a lot of ads pushing Chinese PCP style compressors for use with SCUBA tanks. Although some appear to have two filter columns, I don't see any details of them talking about PMVs. Have you any knowledge of whether these devices can be retrofitted?

In the small filter hooked up on the fill whip, I observed no MPV, and no MPV means very inefficient filtration. Dew point could increase to -20 after a malefunction MPV.

There are electric compressors with the rule of thumb being the cheaper they are, the shallower they work! Google search is best or check out www.scubaboard.com for past discussion on selecting an electric hookah setup. Be smart and be safe when picking a setup.

Hi Alec. This isn't related to this, but do you by any chance know whether there is any commercially available liquid breathing systems for extremely deep diving like in the movie The Abyss? Or is that still pretty much science fiction at this point? Because I know that in principle there's no reason why it couldn't work, but I have no idea whether anything even remotely like that is actually available commercially yet. Have you ever come across anything like that?

Liquid breathing has been done experimentally and has proven to be more than theory, it works. So far with small mammals only. It may happen but not in my lifetime. Alec

So quick question. Is the cost coming from the compressors ability to intake clean air from a distance? Or is it expensive because of the attached filters? What is the difference between this and buying one of the cheap Orion Motor Tech compressors with a big 2-stage filter? If the air is being filtered for oil, water, odors, and particles does that make it breathable? I am genuinely curios I am new to diving and I live VERY far away from a dive shop and I need a compressor to fill my own tanks. I would really appreciate any insight and recommendations.

The new mini-compressors MIGHT work just fine. The 2 concerns are air quality and speed. If you can be sure that the air is breathing quality and if you can afford to wait an extended period for the tank to fill, they should be fine. Take care. Alec

@@AM-rq1no if it taste and smells like shit.... your guess, really just go by manufactures recommendations.... I had a small compressor 50 years ago it took about 4 hours to fill a 80 tank... it all adds up to how much you dive and how much money you got...

I'm solo diving in Bali at the moment, and air tank rentals are $ 2 and EAN32 $3.50 (including tank site drop-off and pick up). And as it's mostly shore diving, that's my cost per dive 🤣 🤣 🤣

It's not hard. Any competent person can learn to run a compressor easily. There are short (2-3 hour ) course available. Most of the important points are covered in the manual but maybe you can get a dive store staff member to help. Aec

I highly recommend organized training for any safety of life training topics but don't discount what the internet has to offer just take everything with a grain of salt even what established instructors tell you and challenge every thing with good judgement, time and multiple resources you will eventually weed out the truths from the assumptions and plain old misinformations.

Not sure of your question but each compressor has a maximum fill rate. In actual use the fill rate is a little less depending on air temp, compressor use, and many other factors. Alec

My view is reliability first. If it does not start and fill, does not matter how much you paid for it right? Next is features you actually need; fill rate, portability, pressure gauges, etc. Are you filling one tank in the morning and one in the afternoon or 4 tanks at once without stopping all day. Alec

Hi Alec, you are the SCUBA guru and I need some advice, please. I just purchased an old 1964 Bauer KA10B with a JLO 149cc 2 stroke engine. It is a beautiful piece of SCUBA history and I would like to restore it, not to fill tanks, more as a showpiece of SCUBA diving history. I bought it off a couple who had it in storage and never had it running. I have cleaned out the JLO engine and have it running and have had it pressurize to 1500psi, it can go as high as 4500psi. Bloody noisy! But...It has a lot of brass, bronze, and copper pipe that will clean up and polish up a treat, my question is do you or anyone have a manual for a Bauer KA10B and possibly parts? Or point me in the right direction, please.

Second: contact Bauer directly, phone or email as they may have the manual for it either digital or paper (may be a small charge). Wouldn’t filling an 80 cf tank from 0-3000 psi at 8 cfm be 10 minutes instead of 8 minutes.

There are many factors when filling a tank, starting with how much air is in it. I got the 8 minutes from the filling station owner as most of our 72 cu/ft 2600 psi tanks came up from 30 minute dives at 20 ft with around 800 psi. Please excuse my simplification of filling times.

I was thinking Alec isn't in Ontario !

There are many filters from inlet, drying, cleaning to taste/odor filters. A scuba compressor specialist can answer you questions better and faster than I can.

I prefer by far give the filling of my tanks that has a set of cascades for the simple reason that the compressed air has the time to cool and precipitate the water in the cascade tanks and not in by tanks. I fear these portable compressors for the same reason because the inline filters can't stay cool with a such short whip hose.

Hopefully, there's no water in the cascades!! They can rust and have no visual requirement. You are right in thinking that a cascade system gives a better fill but that's because it can be controlled. When filling directly from a compressor, the fill rate is what the compressor delivers. With a cascade, you can make it as slow as you like. However, if there's water in the air, it will be in your tank too. It won't settle in the cascade tank and stay there. Portable scuba compressors are safe but they require diligence and care to keep them that way. Curiously, divers who buy a compressor for their own use, do so to save money. They are less likely to exercise due diligence and spend the money needed to keep that compressor in perfect condition. I've seen some pretty scary examples. Take care down there. Alec

I'm not sure of the exact model. Bauer has dozens and this is an older one. I don't think it's a 14 though. The K14 is a 4 cylinder (stage) compressor while this is a 3 cylinder. I'll check with Roger. Alec

More than a few divers have been hurt by having exhaust sucked into the intake. Upwind and high is the best location for the air intake. Alec

No idea on the price as Roger, the owner/builder of the compressor, trailer, cascade system and everything inside customized it into a fantastic portable setup. Yes. It's compressor oil! Sorry. Couldn't resist. It is compressor oil which is really just a different viscosity. It's still petroleum-based motor oil. Most modern compressors, like most cars, are now using synthetic oil. But it must still be designated as compressor oil. Alec

Sorry I don't understand that portable word.I mean is it breathable air or movable compressor .any air compressor can fill tank as per their speed of filling as u said or there are specially designed for diving air filling compressor sry I am confused.my doubts is even. Car tires air compressor can fill the tank

Service station-type (car tire) air compressors are pretty much limited to 125psi maximum. A scuba tank with 125psi in it is considered empty! Not to mention that a service station-type compressor is NOT breathable air. For scuba, you need 3000psi minimum (most are 4500psi) and breathing air filters. Hence the cost. Alec

lol you get an air fill for 5 to 10 dollars your stealing it lmfao my dive shop saying 10 dollars is to much for a fill up and has 6 dollar fill ups yet Dana point is 10 bucks lol.

Dive shops price fills based on many factors, mostly on how many they do a year and their investment in filling gear. Those are darn good prices so dive lots Max.

Several red flags to me. 1, not dedicated to scuba but anything, 2, no auto shut off (manual), 3, no information on air quality (dry + filtered air) is mandatory for diving. Also what ever compressor you get, send a air sample for testing before diving to ensure its safe.

Looks like a nice unit as i this a dedicated filter unit. Suggest once setup, fill a tank then empty the tank and repeat 2-3 times. This tests its long run abilities and after the last fill get a air sample bottle to send to a lab for a quality test before diving. No matter how good a compressor may be, recommend getting the air tested to be 100% sure you're betting your life its safe. Testing is not expensive but once passed you know its good quality diving air and then you can charge your buddies for fills to pay it back.
