Porsche Speed : 3D Car Animation
Hi peoples!
We made this film to showcase our CG abilities. We wanted to make the best showcase one can imagine for a new car. We chose the Porsche since we...just..like Porsches!
We storyboarded, previzzed, animated and rendered it all in house. Production took 4 weeks, rendering on a 8 core MacPro took 4 months non stop. All frames rendered at a minimum of 1 frame an hour, some took 24 hours per frame (the door opening took that long because of the blurry reflections). Everything was rendered in 1920x817 in Cinema4D. No Radiosity was used, only some area lights and a nice environment based on an EMC room.
Part 2 of this film is currently in production and is going to look even awesomer than this one :D ! We plan on doing some sort of trilogy based around the awesomeness of the car.
This is the kind of stuff we want to do, create awesome films with a high production value that evoke a positive emotion.

Let's appreciate this was 12 years ago.. Insane
I made donut yesterday
No way this is a 2008 video, I was born in that year and videos that time were never like this. That so cool!
wait ! so this is from 2008 bro i swear when i saw the quality i thought it's like 2018 and above xD so amazing
It looks awesome now! But, in 2008! WOW
Simply stunning. Pure perfection
Goes to show that the software is just a tool and the Artist real magic.

Was this done with Cinema 4D ?

Yes it was done entirely in Cinema4D version 9. I used the standard render engine and did some color stuff in after effects.

Thats nothing short of amazing. Beautifully done :D
Congrats! Your 3D animation looks amazing!
Thanks a lot Dave! Radiosity wasn't needed, the driving away part is hand animated. Thanks man!
Oooooooh yeah!! Outstanding rendering
I sat here critiquing this ( I do it to improve my self, what would I do better) I scrolled down, and instantly took it back. 2008? Damn, that's impressive. Never have I responded like that lol.
i think im gonna cry....the beauty... TOT
Amazing!
Exquisito!!!!, good job, very good job.
4 months bloody hell !
AWESOME .. i think that are REAL
wow great job, one day you guys gunna become big time CG pplz

Is it new gran Turismo 7?
didn't belive it was cg until i saw the break downs..... a compliment i geuss : P
i think you have to be awesome, because this video is
Dude, you are good..really good. Amazing art direction as well. I want to be doing this kind of commercials but i hope it wont take me that long to render, though rendering time depends on a number of factors.
very nice job :)
Duuuudes!!! Ok im not a Porsche fan personally i like Aston Martin for live!! uhm but im a CG enthusiast and what u just rendered there is AWESOME!!! i do some C4D stuff myself and u didnt use GI? why? and the animation? when the car takes off looks pretty dynamic - really cool keep on!
INSANE better than real life
dam its sooo clear
Sick
OMFG no WAY!!!! That's is f*cking awesome I simply don't have words for it. 5/5 *****
Damn the person who animated this is a fucking beast
nice car paint mate!
4 month render... WOW. Octane sure could have came in handy at the time haha
@alanrc2008 ofc u can do it with 3D Studios Max. Its mostly about how you setup the lights and materials =)
cool!
best animation ever and model is awesome keep up the good work..btw how long did the modeling take?
Hi Theo, we didn't use GI since I light all my scenes by hand. It gives exactly the amount of control I need + it is a lot faster :) . I used only some mild Ambient occlusion on the tyres, that's all. The rest is soft shadows, one volumetric light and 1 area light. I don't think this movie suffers from a lack of GI, some people even asked me if this was rendered in Vray! I guess I lighted it okay then.
I have a high respect for anyone that can do this kind of work. This is simply amazing! cinema 4D is a very good 3d application in my opinion. Where did you guys learn how to do this stuff? Great job!!
Holy Fucking Shit!!! You have all my respect man. I bet Porsche would want to use this video for their commercials. Awesome shit yo!!!
oh my fucking god!!!!!! that is so damn awesome! you guys are brilliant! could you do that for another car, for one that doesn´t exist?
Haha thanks! It is just a matter of personal preference. MAX can do it too ofcourse :) .
Very true! This however was a unlimited showcase of our ability, not a commercial project. We come from a very deadline intensive workflow and know exactly how to get things done fast, this could have been produced in 3 weeks if nececcary. We would have rented a renderfarm and voila, done :-) . Thanks for the kind words!
2008.. I was only 4...
Could you guys tell us configuration of your machines?
Any Tutorial for something like this? it could give you a ton of subscriptions
The Reflections are a bit high on it. (You can see it on the head light on the left side when the camera pans over to it. It's completely white.) Other than that, it looks great!
Reads render time.. 4 Hours!!.. realizes video is 10 years old... Regains hope woooooo
wow...
That looks absolutely amazing! I love the building itself too, strong look in the reflections. I just found the HD version in your profile. WOW! Its not full HD though, I'm disappointed. I think the HD on youtube is higher quality. Everything down to the tires in geometry, and I love it! Did you render with mental ray? If so, did you use the MI car paint phen shader? I'm going to re subd my car, now that mental ray 3.7 fixed the subd rendering glitch. Can't wait for the sequels!
awesome man....that fucking shine on that car...too damn sexxy..keep up d gud work..gudluck mate..!!
Very great sir . Did your render in c4d
I love the studio setup. Is there a light source above the car?
holy fuck !!!!! its so fucking photorealistic !!!!!!!!
Did you make the car paint yourselves? Can you maybe provide some help as to how reflections are used in the material? Did you use GGX, Beckmann or something else? Thanks
hi @daan pol , i want to ask, can i use this video from 0:54 to 1:00 for personal used?
can u please tell me how u did the rendering? i really need to know! And also wat programs too please.
how many frames did you use on your porsche speed video.... Fantastic work. keep it up :)
4months non stop to render? It looks awesome but working as cg 10years ago must be very hard Can anyone guess how long would it take today?

I bought Octane recently yes! I could have done it in one afternoon lol.
Was this made with 3dsMAX?
Where do you work now sir
how the hell do your guys make the lights ex. at 0:33!!!! please help me out :(
you send 4 months on rending? 😮
bro... many peoples in 2021 can't do that
this would take 12 years to render on my pc for one frame
OMG i was 9 in 2008
Whats the exposure level of the outside light.24 hours per frame is too much since you could render that scene without rendering.Lol i mean with an external program it could take 1 hour to complete scene with single render image.Extreme shading keep up ;)
1 decade later
Dude wtf.. 24 hours a frame?!!!! I bet I can render the same quality quicker with 3ds max!
Wait a minute.... this is GCI?
someone? call 911. tell them to bust those 2 guys who disliked this video...
Omg omg omg are you still active?
Any comments on the four months it took to render????!!!

Damn four months 😬😬
4 months to render oh my god. That's insane. Isn't there a way to render a video using multiple computers so its faster? Like you could render half the video on 2 computers and then send it over to one computer to string it back together?
@draylex

It is possible, Avatar (The movie) was made like this. (around 7000 computers were used)

2008? What is the software
@llamatech546

It's 3d max or blender 1 of them
are you interested in doing a short animation job for me? I have a video idea for my website. please respond?
This is great, but I might recommend you get more machines to render with instead of just one Mac Pro. You should have a small render farm doing the heavy lifting for this kind of work. Turned out great though. Holy crap I just noticed the published date! I'm sorry bro. I thought this was recent! Wow. Great job for that era.

i prefer c4d
Whatttttt

4 words: THIS CANNOT BE 3D!
Who is watching this march 2021 😂😂
donut
1920x817 why??? 4 months to render 90 seconds of footage, you need to put food in your belly friend. It looks very good, but I think you went a bit overboard. If you get a job you MIGHT have 30 days to complete a 60 second tv spot from scratch, often times even pro shops have to get by with more footage in less time! Good luck :)
@C4Real3Danimation "Cinema 4D is also good but it sucks" so, not contradicting yourself there one bit, then...
TERIBLE!
