Porsche Speed : 3D Car Animation

Hi peoples!
We made this film to showcase our CG abilities. We wanted to make the best showcase one can imagine for a new car. We chose the Porsche since we...just..like Porsches!
We storyboarded, previzzed, animated and rendered it all in house. Production took 4 weeks, rendering on a 8 core MacPro took 4 months non stop. All frames rendered at a minimum of 1 frame an hour, some took 24 hours per frame (the door opening took that long because of the blurry reflections). Everything was rendered in 1920x817 in Cinema4D. No Radiosity was used, only some area lights and a nice environment based on an EMC room.
Part 2 of this film is currently in production and is going to look even awesomer than this one :D ! We plan on doing some sort of trilogy based around the awesomeness of the car.
This is the kind of stuff we want to do, create awesome films with a high production value that evoke a positive emotion.
Audio was created by Maarten from www.m-works.nl
Thanks again Maarten!

Hi Theo, we didn't use GI since I light all my scenes by hand. It gives exactly the amount of control I need + it is a lot faster :) . I used only some mild Ambient occlusion on the tyres, that's all. The rest is soft shadows, one volumetric light and 1 area light. I don't think this movie suffers from a lack of GI, some people even asked me if this was rendered in Vray! I guess I lighted it okay then.

Very true! This however was a unlimited showcase of our ability, not a commercial project. We come from a very deadline intensive workflow and know exactly how to get things done fast, this could have been produced in 3 weeks if nececcary. We would have rented a renderfarm and voila, done :-) . Thanks for the kind words!

I think the HD on youtube is higher quality. Everything down to the tires in geometry, and I love it! Did you render with mental ray? If so, did you use the MI car paint phen shader? I'm going to re subd my car, now that mental ray 3.7 fixed the subd rendering glitch. Can't wait for the sequels!

This is great, but I might recommend you get more machines to render with instead of just one Mac Pro. You should have a small render farm doing the heavy lifting for this kind of work. Turned out great though. Holy crap I just noticed the published date! I'm sorry bro. I thought this was recent! Wow. Great job for that era.

1920x817 why??? 4 months to render 90 seconds of footage, you need to put food in your belly friend. It looks very good, but I think you went a bit overboard. If you get a job you MIGHT have 30 days to complete a 60 second tv spot from scratch, often times even pro shops have to get by with more footage in less time! Good luck :)
