    I read up on the systems that allow the Cayenne to do what is shown in this video and they are very similar to those in the newest landrovers. The system is applying the brake to the wheel that has no traction so the wheel that does can move the SUV. While I don't condone what Porsche has done, it is a capable vehicle that would be better than any STOCK Jeep in a off road situation. It has more computer systems & power in it's stock form than any Jeep will ever have in stock form.

    This is very, very impressive for a Porsche of all cars! Especially with those tires. The Porsche Cayenne was never even designed with off roading in mind as far as I can tell so this is stunning. I ALMOST bought one, until I found a Land Rover LR3 for roughly the same price =D

    porsche dynamic chassis control (PDCC) made two separate chassis out of one. for off-road, PDCC along with air suspension ensure the car has maximum axle articulation and respectable suspension travel. for on-road, PDCC and air suspension again working together to make cayenne handle like a sports car on a track . as far as 4wd system are concern, cayenne does a system of 100% lockable center and rear limited slip differentials. so porsche cayenne is a pretty capable off-roader.

    electronic traction control is one of the best in its class i guess.. without it, and with those tires, most of the 4x4's get stuck..

  • @DisposableWarrior
    @DisposableWarrior15 жыл бұрын

    cayenne 4WD system is equiped with two mechanical limited slip differentials that can divert up to around 85% of the power sent to one particular axle to one wheel. when one wheel loses traction and can sustain no more than around15% of the power, ABD will step in and apply braking to the wheel with no traction to act like an locker so that the wheel with good traction can get enough power to move the vehicle. for $3000, porsche will add a real mechanical locker to the rear axle.

    +Nic B Traction control is in OFF mode for this type of driving. With TC on you would go nowhere

  • @NicB-Creations

    @NicB-Creations

    8 жыл бұрын

    No way, look at 0:36, front right wheel is fully off the ground yet power is being directed to the front left wheel. That's the electronic traction control locking the front right brake to redirect power. With an open diff you'd normally see the lifted wheel spin freely. A locked diff would cause both wheels to turn equally fast.

  • @lucdesautels1556

    +Nic B Quite the opposite what you are saying, if you ever do go off-road , and I would gladly invite you to our training sessions at the 4x4 center in Vermont, traction ans stability controls are on-road safety features that are verymuch troublesome off-road, this is why on most off-road capable vehicules like the Cayenne and other SUVs these are automatically turned off as soon as you choose "dirt" or " snow" mode. I invite you to read more about this subject instead of assuming things.

  • @NicB-Creations

    @NicB-Creations

    8 жыл бұрын

    So why is the lifted wheel not spinning (locked) The standard cayenne only has a center diff lock, front diff is open on any version as far as I know. Also PSM (Porsche stability magement) can't be turned of completely and will kick in if there is exessive wheel spin. I'd rather say that dirt or snow mode changes the traction algorithm to be more suitable for offroad. I kindly invite you to explain your theory in more detail.

  • @NicB-Creations

    @NicB-Creations

    Took your advice,read more, same conclusion. From wikipedia: in off-road vehicles: Traction control is used instead of, or in addition to, the mechanical limited slip or locking differential. It is often implemented with an electronic limited slip differential, as well as other computerized controls of the engine and transmission. The spinning wheel is slowed down with short applications of brakes, diverting more torque to the non-spinning wheel; this is the system adopted by Range Rover in 1993, for example. ABS brake traction control has several advantages over limited-slip and locking differentials, such as steering control of a vehicle is easier, so the system can be continuously enabled. It also creates less stress on powertrain and driveline components, and increases durability as there are fewer moving parts to fail.[2] When programmed or calibrated for off-road use, traction control systems like Ford’s four-wheel electronic traction control (ETC) which is included with AdvanceTrac, and Porsche’s four-wheel automatic brake differential (ABD), can send 100 percent of torque to any one wheel or wheels, via an aggressive brake strategy or "brake locking", allowing vehicles like the Expedition and Cayenne to keep moving, even with two wheels (one front, one rear) completely off the ground.

    i have traction control on my toyota sequoia, all it does is limit the throttle. if the car is sensing that i am about to losing traction , traction control won't allow to the engine to rev up even when i put the pedal to metal. it is just an engine managment that limit power output to sustain traction on slipery surface, if you have one wheel on each axle off ground, traction control isn't going to help you. what you talked about is ABD (automatic braking differential), which will help you.

    mechanical lock is better tha ABD because it is more direct and almost instantly effective. on the central axle, there is a 100% lockable differential that distribute power according to the traction level on the front and rear axle, and if it is need, the central differential can be locked and provide up to 100% of the power to one axle. traction control is to control the power output of the engine in order to maintain traction; it has nothing to do with bapplying brake, which is ABD.

    "you can't have power without torque" and more torque is actually bad in this situation. what you need is the control of torque. too little torque you will not climb up, too much torque you wheel will slip, and you will slide to down to the bottom of the slope. PDCC and cross-link air suspension would also help on terrain like this. the reason why i don't prefer solid axle is because those cars are scary to drive on normal road. porsche is supposed to be good both on and off-road.
