Beautifully shot video, excellent review. In 2014/15 I almost bought the GTS but in the end did not. Fast forward to this February when I order the new GTS 4.0 based on reviews. I'm told the car will arrive in April 2021. Then recently a friend lets me know the same 2015 GTS I almost order six years ago with a manual shift is for sale in Montreal. I buy the car and cancel the new GTS 4.0 order. Unquestionably, the best and most fun car I have owned in my 40+ years of driving. Had Corvettes, MGBs, Miata's, Mustangs, Audis, etc....none have been in the zone of this little Carmine Red mid-engine beauty. It is not particularly fast but that is not what this car is about. As you discussed Roger, they way this car handles with the tweaked suspension, the comfort level in the cockpit, the smooth stick shifts, and of course....the riotous and delicious sound from the exhaust....Porsche produced something truly special with this car. No GTS 4.0s are at dealers yet and the few recent reviews are strong but there is concerns being expressed about the exhaust sound (new noise pollution controls) and the gearing is not as tight as the 981 GTS. Time will tell whether the 4.0 GTS will match the 2014-2016 GTS but based on the current strong market pricing, I suspect there are many Porsche fanatics that are seeing this car as something truly unique. With 5500 of them made and only 15% fitted with manual transmissions, it is no surprise that some collector magazines are now recommending the 981 GTS as a strong "buy" for enthusiasts. Again, thanks Roger for a wonderful review and reinforcing why this car is so spectacular.

Hi Roger, thanks for your video. You are absolutety right with your statements about the 981 GTS. I‘ve bought one of the last 981 GTS in november 2015. I've thought about buying a 911 or the GTS 4.0 several times, but there is nothing like the sound of the 981 GTS. The driving characteristics and the performance are absolutely impressive. I look forward to every tour with my GTS and I am waiting for the summer (On an dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair). Greatings from Kiel

Roger, i just traded my 2020 Cayman T for a 2015 Boxster GTS after getting tired of waiting for about 15 months for an allocation for the Cayman 4.0. I figured that with the world situation i was unlikely to get one for another 15 months. I am not disappointed. This GTS is a gem and is everything you say it is. I cannot wait to get it to the track next year and enjoy all that it is capable of. The sound….orgasmic!

si anton was there in January and stayed at the lovely Empire Hotel. Have been going to Llandudno since I was a youngster with friends and family primarily for proximity to Snowdonia for climbing and walking. Some great driving roads around North Wales - just be on your toes with the 911 GTS - it's too easy to get carried away! Enjoy your new car.

Great review as usual Roger!👍🏻 I still think the 981 Boxster S is a little under appreciated, as values are falling quicker than they should vs the 718. I love my 2013 Boxster S like crazy...it is the most perfect 2 seater open top sports car and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, even to the shops for a loaf of bread!!!😂

Great review again Roger - and highly topical as I bought a red Boxster 981 GTS just before lockdown to replace my Boxster T! Unfortunately I only got to drive it home from the dealer before lockdown and have just made two supermarket runs since to keep the battery going flat - but looking forward to putting some miles on it whenever lockdown lifts!

For me, the 981 GTSB came closest to the joy of driving a 911. That exhaust sound 👌🏼Very good! 991 GT3 is the only one that sounds as good.

This is such a good car but my 575bhp F Type SVR is the most antisocial car for crackles and bangs that sticks 2 fingers up to the environment. But quite agree this Boxster handles better; nothing beats mid-engine layout for perfect cornering. Great review, thanks!

Loved your video. My 3rd Boxster is a ‘13 Boxster S with that beautiful 3.4L engine that sounds so great. I’m sure the GTS would be a slight improvement but I am satisfied with the S. I prefer full leather and no alcantara 😊. Keep up the good work and stay healthy.

I do think the 981 Spyder is the best sounding car by far in the Boxster lineage. While the 718 Spyder looks perfectly styled for 2020, I think the 981 will endure and become the long term classic. tom Craig I agree, the 981 Spyder sounds better than the 718 Spyder. However, apart from the sound nothing else is better compared to the 718, so when both of them age and warranty is not a thing anymore, you can just upgrade the exhaust on the 718 Spyder and you will forget about the 981 :) the 718 Spyder is the pinnacle of the Boxster lineup because it’s the first (and probably last) boxster to get the GT-goodies. just my opinion.

I guess that based on data the 718 spyder is a better track car. But for the road and as a weekend toy the rawness and sound of the 981 makes it a bit more special. It’s similar like the evolution between the Ferrari 458 and the 488.

I have a copy of the book by Johnny Tipler "Porsche Boxster and Cayman, the complete story". Its a great read. He spoke highly of the GTS 981 if I recall. Better value than an optioned up S. Yes agreed the sound is pleasing. Great car. Thanks again for an enjoyable video Roger.

Better value when new but now you can't find a well sorted GTS for less than $60k but you can find an equal or superior optioned 981S for $40k and with a $1200 tune it will have more power and torque than a GTS

I can say exactly the same for the 718 2ltr Boxster. Amazing car and fast enough to nock the socks off a 981 GTS.

It’s not about knocking the socks off… it’s about pure emotion. Even my e93 335i could beat my 981 Boxster GTS in a straight line and a Subaru would do so as well. The 981 has a soul, the 718 (which is a great and fast car) does not unfortunately.

GBOAF216 that was filmed around The Great Orme, Llandudno, North Wales. One of my favourite places to visit and not too far from Snowdonia. The road is a toll road mainly one way around the Orme in an anti clockwise direction with stunning views. Nice cafe half way round for refreshments or on up to the summit for more refreshments. On a nice day you can't beat it. Also you can take the tram or cable car from the town of Llandudno. Great short walks and very popular with cyclists. Watch out for the goats. Would recommend the family run Empire Hotel, Chapel Walks for a great stay in opulent surroundings and great service.

Everything the GTS had was available as optional for the S. The only difference back then was that the GTS offering a “package discount “

Definitely right about if you want one, you better hurry because I have no plans on selling mine and it took me 4 months to find the perfect one, twice!

Well done nicely said and described. I own a 1998 Boxter, a Cayman S 2006, à 911 C4S 2016. I am buying my good friend’s 2016 Boxter GTS 12500 kms white on black with optional 21’’ turbo wheels. I drove and it is insanely sweet sound with the sport exhaust system it even sounds better than my 911 although I have the sport package in it? We share the same analogy on that car.. cheers. Sami

Err... You said this was "pre lockdown". But you're in a short sleeved shirt and the sun is out. This must have been a 2019 video? Regardless. Cracking little sports car. Enough to scare any 911 driver if it's well driven. And that engine sounds awesome with all the pops, bangs whistles and flutes thrown in. :-))... BTW. You said a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. I’ve got a boxster s 981 2012 and it’s great, I had a 911 gts before but I prefer the boxster handles better. I would never bother with PDK it’s just not the same as a manual. My 2012 is a manual 😃

Another excellent video Roger. Any chance of doing a feature on how the 981 is doing on the pre owned market as the 718 is a 4 cylinder. I have a 2014 981 Cayman with loads of spec. Specced by Porsche Exeter and I love it. So emphasis on the Cayman would be good as a lot of vlogs are either Boxster or 911. Cheers Gordon

Great Review! I have been going back and forth on a 718S or a 2015 GTS for slightly more money. I drove the 718S yesterday. Have yet to drive a 981. Just cant give over the technological advancement of the 718 in term of Navi system and slightly improved driving dynamics (some have reported) of the 718. You believe the 981 GTS is really THAT much of a better car over the 718? I didn't really get the feels from the 718. Fast for sure, turbo torque was great. Something pulls me to that 3.4L 6........

Hi Jason, the 718 boxster is a better car than the 981 in most departments, and has more low end torque but in everything else the older 981 engine is much more entertaining than the 4 cylinder 718. Now though the new 6 cylinder 718's are spicing things up, - Roger

I was hoping the new cars could equal the sound of 981, but alas, it sounds like they do not. I am trying to decide between a 981 Spyder or 718 Spyder but still nothing in the US to sample as of 5/1. I also want to see if the 718 Spyder has a lighter clutch. I want it as a DD but I felt the 981 clutch was too much for my wimpy leg

thanks brad, yes 981 spyder sounds better than the 718, I've heard a 718 4.0l with an after market exhaust and that sounds amazing and changes everything although could affect the warranty, clutch on the 718 spyder is not heavy.

thanks Andrew, tough choice, manual adds involvement and seems to be valued higher, pdk better on a track and for daily driving.

I went back and forth between a very well sorted Boxster S and a GTS and drove both. What really pushed me to the S is that the prices of manual transmission (a MUST for me) GTS cars are now $15-$20k more than the S! So I ended up buying a beautiful Amaranth Red 981 S with MT, PSE, 20” wheels and full leather. LOVE the car and other than 2 rather than 3 radiators, I really can’t tell any difference between my S and a GTS. Best car I’ve ever driven!

Question: How had the alcantara steering wheel held up over the past 4-5 years on the one in this video? I've heard stories of early wear. Hope you and Jilly are well!

excellent ! a perfect sunny day car. The alcantara wheels show little signs of wear even after several years of use but they do get badly oiled up and go smooth and shiny, alcantara cleaner and a upholstery brush from amazon cleans the years of hand grease away in no time, :-) Jilly & I are fine thanks for asking - stay safe

Beautiful sports car , the only problem with it is you can get a 981 3.4 S for a hell of a lot less money now in the UK , you can pick up a nice 981 S for 25k now and the cheapest GTS is 40k upwards , for a working class guy like me is the extra 15k which is 37.5% more than a nice second hand S going to give me 37.5% more fun ?? Could be a good investment car but then I would be worried using it putting mileage on it , still love it though :-) love your videos keep them coming

A well specified S with Sports Chrono and PSE really is no different, the GTS just has all the nice little touches in one package, definitely worth a small premium but not 10k plus.

I have had a 991 Carrera Cabrio, Corvette Cabrio and a few others along the way. Suffice to say that I just got rid of a 2020 Acura NSX with a price tag close to $200k US.....the replacement is a 2016 981 Boxster GTS. It is like Gearge Best to me. Yes there are faster, more direct, better goal scorers around but best like the GTS was somehow magical.

You can buy them at Zunsport, I have them too for protection of the radiators and aesthetics.

I have a 981 GTS and when Porsche annoucied the new 4.0 GTS I had a rethink. Maybe the time had come to switch to a 911. Just can’t make the mid to rear engine logic make sense. So think Ok I’ll buy a new cayman 4.0. Reviews.. good but don’t emulate the noise of the 981. So after all this should I go for a 911 or new 4.0 and my conclusion is stick with the best😂😂😂

Roger Bailey welcome Roger, thanks for the note, I had a Cayman S our recently, I don’t recall the bobbing but it didn’t like the bumpy roads in general, only ever driven the 911 on track (GT3 RS .1 and GTS .3 - yes was spoiled) so hard to say but would like to know what it would be like on bumpier roads.....I don’t live on too many roads that are track smooth...☹️

Beautiful car Rodger ! Lucky owner 👍but at the price I think a Jaguar F-Type R offers so much more 550hp / 0-60 in 4 secs / 186 mph and good soundtrack both driver at heart 👍

Shaheen tough choice, the boxster adds that open air driving and the GT4 is more involving, both have good residuals, if your not planning to track I'd lean towards the boxster GTS

I feel like the Boxster 981 or Boxster S 981 delivers the same performance. You can option out the Sports Exhaust or go with an aftermarket Akropovic Exhaust and still have the same amount of fun for less money... hmmm .

If you bought it new, it was a huge value with all the options and they held their value and will continue to. Now you can get an S with similar options for $10k to $20k less and for $1000 add 30hp with a tune. All of that said, compare the front end bumper treatment of both along with the tail lights, GTS FTW!!

Hello, Thanks for this review. Car sounds indeed great. However, every time I drove the car in normal traffic the exhaust has an annoying "drone". Certainly on the highway at constant speed. Did you notice this also ? Regards Cayman 981 2.7 driver.

yes the boxster makes a slight drone however the cayman is much worse for this for some reason.

I guess the closed cabine from the cayman makes the drone even worse. Does someone knows an aftermarked exhaust that solves this problem. This is reason I did not buy the GTS yet and still drive the 981 base Cayman. Regards.

GT86 I drive a 981 CGTS. Could you describe what the drone sounds like to you? Are you referring to the somewhat hollow-sounding resonance from the exhaust when you press the throttle, or a different noise? Because if you are, I find that there’s no drone if you turn off the sport exhaust. With the exhaust off, the flaps will automatically open when on throttle at 4000 rpm. I would also try different units. Some have worse drone than others.

GT86 I personally leave the exhaust valves open most of the time. We both know that our engines don’t really like low rpms, so my solution for driving at highway speeds is keeping the car in a lower gear, or feather the throttle. Above 3000 rpm there’s almost no drone for me at all. Bear in mind that all the noise the drivetrain makes will be amplified in a GTS because it comes standard with a sound symposer (basically a small hole and a tunnel between the engine and the cabin). If you don’t like the rawness, I suggest looking at a high-spec Cayman S instead, as it has a much quieter cabin. The reason I won’t consider an aftermarket exhaust is that it changes the tone of the exhaust noise - I really like the way stock PSE sounds on my car so I plan to keep it that way. If I feel like cruising I’ll just turn the exhaust button off. I’ve found that driving in sport mode with the exhaust off can be quite relaxing but enjoyable.

The 981 GTS Cayman is even better!

My C43 coupe sounded fantastic.

PASM is not stability management. That's PSM. PASM is active suspension. Read the manual mate!

And item for use which costs money to maintain cannot be a safe investment, even if it were not to depreciate in value. Out of Corona boredom, I just added up all my fuel bills, and adding up most other running costs, this car has cost me pretty much 300 Pounds per month to run (4.5 years), not taking the price of the car in to account. Something that costs you 10 Pounds every day, whether you use it or not, which you have to buy in the first place and which actually depreciates in value is not a "safe investment". ;)

Cayman is a bit more practical, otherwise boxster would get my money

I agree near perfect. Lines, power, sound and quality. I own one of these. It will not leave my possession. This car is visceral. You can drive the PDK in a manual manner that mimics a clutched manual. Pause between a shift ad if you are clutching and the shift is exciting.

Superb car but I think the best sounding 981 Boxster/Cayman is the 2.7 engine. It's more sonorous than the 3.4 and the crackling and popping of the Boxster/Cayman GTS spoils it for me and sounds silly. It's fakery and for me the cleaner sounding smaller engine is sweeter and easier to rev out on todays traffic and speed restricted roads. Much better value as well than the GTS as a used buy.

The 718 sounds terrible

If you think a run of the mill Boxster not even at the bottom of its depreciation curve is a safe “investment” ... lol. Cars aren’t investments, you can try to minimize your losses, and if you’re lucky you’ll break even after owning and driving for a bit. Put miles on it, do maintenance and replace tires, you aren’t making money, especially not more than if that money went into real investments that actually provide a return. What kind of investment do you lose money on? Idiocy.
